Book Spirometric Performance of Aircrew Using the Molecular Sieve Oxygen Generator in High Performance Flight

Download or read book Spirometric Performance of Aircrew Using the Molecular Sieve Oxygen Generator in High Performance Flight written by R. Bason and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative evaluation of the pulmonary effects of pure oxygen (LOX) versus the product of the molecular sieve oxygen generator (MSOG) was conducted by eight aircrewmen in an EA-6B aircraft during normal and high g flight maneuvers. Significant reductions in vital capacity and expiratory flow rates immediately following high g flights were observed only in those subjects breathing 100% oxygen. Spirometric values following nonaerobatic flight, however, were not significantly altered by either gas system. Within the limited scope of this study, it appears that the small amount of inert gases present in the MSOG product offers a measurable level of protection against high g absorptional atelectasis in aviators. Book In Flight Evaluation of Two Molecular Sieve Oxygen Concentration Systems in U S Army Aircraft JUH 1H and JU 21G

Download or read book In Flight Evaluation of Two Molecular Sieve Oxygen Concentration Systems in U S Army Aircraft JUH 1H and JU 21G written by W Chaffin (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The logistical problems associated with using high pressure gaseous oxygen systems have encouraged the development of molecular sieve oxygen concentration systems for use on board aircraft. This report summarizes the in- flight static performance characteristics of two such oxygen concentrators installed in a JU-21G fixed-wing, twin-engine turbopropeller aircraft and a JUH- 1H turbine-powered helicopter. Flight profiles consisting of five separate flights at altitudes of 1,524, 3,048, 4,572, 6,096, and 7,620 meters (5,000, 10, 000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 feet) were flown in the JU-21G and five separate flights at altitudes of 1,524, 3,048 and 4,572 meters were flown in the JUH-1H. Oxygen concentration at flows of 15, 25, 35, and 70 liters per minute were recorded at each altitude. These flows were chosen to represent normal breathing requirements for one- and two-man crews. In all cases, the concentrators met or exceeded the requirements of MIL-R-83178. The use of engine bleed air to drive the oxygen concentrators produced no noticeable effect on aircraft performance.

Book Molecular Sieve Generation of Aviator s Oxygen

Download or read book Molecular Sieve Generation of Aviator s Oxygen written by Richard L. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular sieve method of generating an enriched-oxygen breathing gas is one of three candidate on-board oxygen generation (OBOG) systems under joint Navy-Air Force development for application in tactical aircraft. As part of this program, the performance of a nominal 2-man-capacity molecular sieve oxygen generation system (MSOG) was characterized under simulated flight conditions. Data were given on the composition (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon) of the MSOG-generated breathing gas as a function of inlet air pressure, altitude, and gas flow rate. The maximum oxygen concentration observed was 95% with the balance argon. Under certain conditions of pressure, altitude, and flow, the argon enrichment factor exceeded that of oxygen giving a maximum argon concentration of 6.4% with the balance oxygen. The performance of the MSOG was discussed in the context of aircraft operating envelopes using both diluter-demand and 100% delivery subsystems.

Book Environmental Test and Evaluation of a Molecular Sieve On Board Oxygen Generation System

Download or read book Environmental Test and Evaluation of a Molecular Sieve On Board Oxygen Generation System written by Matthew J. Lamb and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the high support costs, increase in aircraft down time, and hazards associated with the use of liquid oxygen, development has been progressing on On-Board Oxygen Generation Systems which have the capability of meeting the requirements of a two man open loop breathing schedule. An evaluation program was conducted on an oxygen generator utilizing the molecular sieve concept of nitrogen absorption. The system was developed to establish unit performance in the environment anticipated during in flight operation. Oxygen concentration has been evaluated as a function of inlet air pressure.

Book Human Compatibility Testing of a 2 man Molecular Sieve Oxygen Generator

Download or read book Human Compatibility Testing of a 2 man Molecular Sieve Oxygen Generator written by Roger L. Stork and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a series of human compatibility tests conducted to man-rate a 2-man molecular sieve oxygen generating system prior to aircraft flight test in the U.S. Navy EA-6B aircraft. The protocol included ground-level evaluations and chamber flights up to 13.4 km (44,000 ft.) altitude, simulating the operating envelope of the EA-6B. It was concluded that the molecular sieve generating unit provided adequate oxygen under all anticipated flight conditions. It was recommended, however, that the flight test program incorporate an improved oxygen regulator to enhance system performance.

Book The Toxicant Induction of Irritant Asthma Rhinitis and Related Conditions

Download or read book The Toxicant Induction of Irritant Asthma Rhinitis and Related Conditions written by William J. Meggs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Untoward reactions to environmental chemicals, particularly when a subject reports difficulties with exposures to chemicals of diverse classes involving more than one organ system, have been poorly understood and an area of great controversy. Studies of airway inflammation induced by respiratory irritants have established neurogenic inflammation as the mechanism for irritant asthma and rhinitis. Remodeling of the airway after an acute irritant exposure can lead to a heightened sensitivity to irritants that persists. Recognition that rhinitis, while sometimes regarded as a trivial disease, is associated with extra-airway manifestations such as fatigue and disturbances of sleep, mood, and cognition, further elucidates how chemical exposures can be serious for susceptible individuals. This book reviews current scientific understanding of irritant airway inflammation and related conditions, including cardiovascular effects of particulate exposures, airborne contact dermatitis and irritant dermatitis, and the brain as a target organ for both allergic and irritant reactions. It is essential reading for physicians and other healthcare workers caring for patients with environmental intolerances. Allergists, toxicologists, occupational and environmental physicians, and pulmonologists will find the materials particularly valuable. Patients and advocates for those with chemical intolerances will also find the book of interest.
