En outre, les nombreux savants qui se sont penchés sur ce problème se sont heurtés à l’obstacle que représente la variété des rites et pratiques selon les régions. En dépit de la diversité des ethnies africaines et l’hétérogénéité apparente des « coutumes » religieuses propres à chacune, l’auteur du présent ouvrage s’est attaché à trouver le sens profond de ce qui pouvait être observé et compris afin d’en extraire l’esprit général, le dénominateur commun et en quelque sorte la théologie. Il importe en effet de bien saisir l’unité de la religion traditionnelle africaine non pas tant à travers certains de ses éléments qu’à travers l’attitude de l’homme vis-à-vis de l’Invisible, à travers le sentiment qu’il a de son appartenance à l’Univers. Il s’agit donc ici, en définitive, d’une sorte d’humanisme qui, partant de l’homme pour revenir à lui, saisit sur son trajet tout ce qui n’est pas lui-même, et qui constitue son dépassement. C’est dans la perspective bien particulière à l’épistémologie africaine qu’a été conçu le présent ouvrage. Il prétend rendre compte de l’unité des cultures africaines. Dans un monde où cette unité est le plus souvent recherchée à travers l’économie et la politique, le dévoilement de l’âme nègre devrait conduire à une meilleure et plus parfaite compréhension de l’Universel africain.
