Book The Secret Gospel of Mark

Download or read book The Secret Gospel of Mark written by Spencer Reece and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exquisite memoir of a life saved by poetry. "This is a portrait of the artist, narrated by a priest and a poet and a gay man with tenderness and searing honesty. Spencer Reece weaves the poetry he loves into how he has lived, the poetry as solace and relief, as confirmation and rescue, as redemption." —Colm Toíbín The Secret Gospel of Mark is a powerful dynamo of a story that delicately weaves the author's experiences with an appreciation for seven great literary touchstones: Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, James Merrill, Mark Strand, George Herbert, and Gerard Manley Hopkins. In speaking to the beauty these poets' works inspire in him, Reece finds the beauty of his own life's journey, a path that runs from coming of age as a gay teenager in the 1980s, Yale, alcoholism, a long stint as a Brooks Brothers salesman, Harvard Divinity School, and leads finally to hard-won success as a poet, reconciliation with his family, and the fulfillment of finding his life's work as an Episcopal priest. Reece's writing approaches the truth and beauty of the writers who have influenced him; elliptical and direct, always beautifully rendered.

Download or read book An Alchemy of Mind written by Diane Ackerman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Zookeeper's Wife, an ambitious and enlightening work that combines an artist's eye with a scientist's erudition to illuminate, as never before, the magic and mysteries of the human mind. Long treasured by literary readers for her uncommon ability to bridge the gap between art and science, celebrated scholar-artist Diane Ackerman returns with the book she was born to write. Her dazzling new work, An Alchemy of Mind, offers an unprecedented exploration and celebration of the mental fantasia in which we spend our days—and does for the human mind what the bestselling A Natural History of the Senses did for the physical senses. Bringing a valuable female perspective to the topic, Diane Ackerman discusses the science of the brain as only she can: with gorgeous, immediate language and imagery that paint an unusually lucid and vibrant picture for the reader. And in addition to explaining memory, thought, emotion, dreams, and language acquisition, she reports on the latest discoveries in neuroscience and addresses controversial subjects like the effects of trauma and male versus female brains. In prose that is not simply accessible but also beautiful and electric, Ackerman distills the hard, objective truths of science in order to yield vivid, heavily anecdotal explanations about a range of existential questions regarding consciousness, human thought, memory, and the nature of identity.

Book My Book of Poems for the World

Download or read book My Book of Poems for the World written by Raymond Crhistian and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I hope this book will touch your heart concerning the many attributes of life I have shared with you. Although I do not have a set style of writing I consider myself as being creative and versatile a God given ability and talent to create words with energy and emotions. The variety of poems that are placed in this book are unique in their own way. I pray which ever poem or prose enlightens your heart that you are able to embrace the words and share them with someone else. I pray this book will help you to be able to encourage the life of someone around you and help to change the course of their life. Poetry is a spiritual gift of love concerning the many evolutions and cycles that this world we call the planet earth evolves around. It is a gift of love shared by the muses of ones connectivity to bring an individual or individuals into a glorifying act of happiness and peace through each word, each line, each stanza and ending. What you choose to grasp and take with you concerning my work I pray it will be with you forever. My Book of Poems for the World is a mixture of my work. According to how you feel at the time you pick up the book to read it. I am certain you will thumb through the pages and say to yourself, I like this one or that one. Just remember that any poem or prose you choose it is definitely up to your liking. You will enjoy them all but everyone has a favorite. I expressed many emotions and feelings in this book concerning the poetry and prose enclosed. You will find poems and prose of, love, romance, humor, spiritual enlightenment, poems and prose for just a little food for thought. On the spiritual side of it all I must say that the prose, Just One More Soul is one of my best works. It deals with the lost soul and how you must seek God for yourself. There is also, A Penny for Your Thoughts quite controversial yet it leads you to a higher power as one would say reminding you in the process of course there is only one true God. If you would go deeper into the book and study it carefully I am certain that you are going to run across what I consider a little food for thought a prose I have written titled, My Shoes, My Bed, My Table if you really have a heart ticking in your body once you finish this one prose I am certain you will become more involved in what is taking place with those who are in need of assistance. Not just the homeless but the widows, orphans and strangers who you turn your backs on daily. I Cry from the Womb is based on the awareness all mothers should have due to their ability to bring life into this world, a child crying for their mothers protection (sensitive and touching). Although I do not consider myself to be a controversial writer I understand that some of my work does take some people into deep thought(meaning critics) and will cause them to think otherwise. I must state because of my love for all mankind I only write what I know to be factual and true, what I have experienced and what I have researched in order that the truth does not get distorted. Prose like The Whip, An Unpaid Debt, The Dim Light of Justice and a few others may spark a few thoughts concerning your creed, color or religious background. I state it is time for a positive change to occur and if my work begins to reopen the doors of concern for everyone to put their cards on the table and show their hands then there is not a need to vote.

Book Poems of a Spiritual Awakening

Download or read book Poems of a Spiritual Awakening written by Anonymous and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems of a Spiritual Awakening offers an intimate look at one poets own spiritual awakening over a period of twenty-seven years, going into and out of recovery. Most critical to this awakening is the all-inclusive universal power of a loving God as He revealed Himself to the author through this inspiring poetry. After many years knowing that change was needed but having no success finding what others had discovered to enable their recoveries, the author began writing poetry to express those innermost feelings. Through these verses, God became an overwhelming presence, awakening the authors innermost emotions and the need to finally begin recovery from addiction. From the pain of acknowledging a troubled past in Boogie Man to the poignancy of Self Love, the author gradually found a way to express deeply buried emotions and fears. This poetry collection was written in less than fifty days, with God providing the path to release and recovery. The Voice I had a voice, I made much noise, I knew just what to do, I yelled in here, I talked out there, the voice within my mind, it drove me very blind. I thought out there, I thought out here, could hardly get some air, and then your voice, that still small sound, just threw me to the ground. It quieted my spirit true and showed me what to do.

Yet, it took 59 years for the first U.S. woman to become an airline pilot in jet-equipped craft one special woman. To melt ingrained resistance, she brought many more flight hours than most male applicants and she understood well the value of cockpit teamwork and cooperation. That special woman was Emily Howell Warner. Early in 1973, Emily wove the winds of chance, of change, and of opportunity to give wing to her own flying career and to throw open cockpit doors to women who followed. It wasn't easy. Emily worked hard for her chances. She seized upon changes wrought by the women's liberation movement and grasped each possible opportunity. As a metaphor for life, a stable aircraft can be put into rotation. Emily faced some turbulent spins; but, she always managed to recover. She changed obstacles into challenges; she answered critics with excellence. A male airline captain said of her, "Atta boy, girl."
