Book The Anatomy of a Believer

Download or read book The Anatomy of a Believer written by Ralph Filicchia and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-16 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaving one's religion for another is not a mindless decision. It is something done thoughtfully and oftentimes with great trepidation. You are leaving your faith, the faith of your family, and many times losing their respect. But there are times when it just has to be done, because not following though could be spiritually fatal. This is the story of one young man and his struggle with the Roman Catholic Church, his family, and eventually with himself. He did not leave the Catholic Church for another church, but left it for a soul-saving relationship with Jesus Christ that goes far beyond any organizational relationship. The book reads like a novel as the author totally bares his soul in his struggle with individual Catholic priests as he prods and digs for answers to the great question of individual salvation. Part of this includes a word-for-word debate near the end of the book with two Jesuit priests at Boston College that is unlike anything now in print. The author at this point knew his subject matter from the inside out, not as one who studied the differences like some "scholars" might, but as one who lived it and came through it. This story took place in the early 1960s and much has changed in the Catholic Church since then. But what has not changed is the sacramental/law system of salvation that holds so many in bondage. It is not what one does for himself--but what Jesus has done for him. Understanding this is the key that frees one from bondage to law and brings one into the freedom of God's grace.

Book Wounded Prophet

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Wounded Prophet written by Michael Ford and published by Image. This book was released on 2002-02-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Nouwen, a Dutch Roman Catholic priest, was one of the most beloved and important spiritual writers of the twentieth century. Since his death in 1996, his stature has only increased; and his books, including The Inner Voice of Love, The Wounded Healer, and The Return of the Prodigal Son, have become cherished classics. For thousands of readers around the world, Nouwen’s influence as a teacher and author is considered equal to, or greater than, that of the century’s great spiritual writers, C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton. Although Nouwen could be radically revealing about his personal thoughts and struggles, there are nonetheless gaps in our understanding of who he was. With Wounded Prophet, readers are given the first extensive look into this man who touched so many, not only through his own words but, most powerfully, through the eyes of those around the world who knew Nouwen best. While researching this compelling biography, BBC producer Michael Ford conducted wide-ranging interviews with Nouwen’s friends, colleagues, and family members. What he discovered was far more compelling than what he had imagined: Though Nouwen was indeed the generous and loving man many thought he was, he was also never able to find consistent peace in his own life. Tormenting him were profound feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and loneliness. This portrait gives an honest and well-balanced account of Nouwen’s life that leaves no stone unturned, investigating his childhood, his family, his sexuality, and his life as a priest and member of the L’Arche Daybreak community in Toronto.

Well over half of young adults raised in the Church have dropped out with many having a strong anti-Church stance, many even believing the Church does more harm than good.Fr. Josh Johnson was one of these people. In Broken and Blessed he tackles the harsh realities facing the Church in the 21st century. With charity and courage he speaks to his own generation of Catholic “Millennials,” who often feel their needs and concerns are not being addressed by the Church, or who simply do not believe the Catholic Faith has any relevance to their lives. Using his own experiences, both as a former struggling young Catholic and as a priest, Fr. Josh offers an inspiring witness of how he came to know God, rather than just knowing about him—and presents practical ways for us to truly know God as well. Broken and Blessed: Addresses head-on Millennials’ most pressing issues with the Catholic Faith Presents powerful and inspiring stories from Fr. Josh’s own faith journey Shows how one can truly encounter Jesus in a personal way Offers practical insights on how to overcome habitual sins Discusses the nature of prayer, as well as the challenges to prayer and how to overcome them
