Book Lemons to Lemonade

Download or read book Lemons to Lemonade written by Sharon ‘Jobe’ Beck and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is the inspiring story of a young man who lived a short life, but lived it well with Christ as his center. His spiritual and emotional strength, along with his invincible spirit, shines forth as a beacon to his two daughters. His last wish was they get to know him. This story comes from the heart of his mother as a revelation to her granddaughters, a tribute to her son and the life that he lived, and his contributions to the medical field in general, and truncus arteriosus specifically. He ran headlong into his life, every day a challenge and a gift, living each day as though it were his last, packing a lifetime into each and every day. He was physically challenged, diminutive of stature, full of joy, and always ready for a hearty laugh. He may have been physically small, but he was larger than life. AND, this is his story. He absolutely made lemonade from the lemons he was given.”

After being married for less than a year, country music legend Alan Jackson's daughter Mattie was faced with navigating a future that didn't include her young husband and the life they dreamed of together. Ben Selecman passed away twelve days after suffering a traumatic brain injury--and three weeks before celebrating his first anniversary with his wife. Suddenly, twenty-eight-year-old Mattie had to find a way to reconcile herself with a good God, even when He did not give her the healing miracle she prayed for. In Lemons on Friday, Mattie Jackson Selecman invites you to walk with her during the first years of grief following Ben's tragic death as she grapples with her loss and leans on a steadfast God. Mattie wrestles with questions that we've all faced in the midst of grief and loss, including: How did I get here? Will this always hurt? Who am I now? Where can I find the strength to keep going? Lemons on Friday will give you the encouragement you need to see life and love in a brand new light, no matter what you're facing. Praise for Lemons on Friday: "Mattie's story carries you through a valley of unbearable heartbreak, and in the very next moment, you are experiencing an ocean of peace that is the heartbeat of Jesus. Her honesty and vulnerability in this book are a beacon of light to any heart that has experienced total darkness. The courage and wisdom expressed through her words will inspire hope in readers, no matter their walk of life." —Lauren Akins, New York Times bestselling author of Live in Love

Book Divorcing Traditions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katherine Lemons
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-03-15
  • ISBN : 1501734784
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Divorcing Traditions written by Katherine Lemons and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divorcing Traditions is an ethnography of Islamic legal expertise and practices in India, a secular state in which Muslims are a significant minority and where Islamic judgments are not legally binding. Katherine Lemons argues that an analysis of divorce in accordance with Islamic strictures is critical to the understanding of Indian secularism. Lemons analyzes four marital dispute adjudication forums run by Muslim jurists or lay Muslims to show that religious law does not muddle the categories of religion and law but generates them. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research conducted in these four institutions—NGO-run women's arbitration centers (mahila panchayats); sharia courts (dar ul-qazas); a Muslim jurist's authoritative legal opinions (fatwas); and the practice of what a Muslim legal expert (mufti) calls "spiritual healing"—Divorcing Traditions shows how secularism is an ongoing project that seeks to establish and maintain an appropriate relationship between religion and politics. A secular state is always secularizing. And yet, as Lemons demonstrates, the state is not the only arbiter of the relationship between religion and law: religious legal forums help to constitute the categories of private and public, religious and secular upon which secularism relies. In the end, because Muslim legal expertise and practice are central to the Indian legal system and because Muslim divorce's contested legal status marks a crisis of the secular distinction between religion and law, Muslim divorce, argues Lemons, is a key site for understanding Indian secularism.
