Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surprising look at the 28 Catholic radicals who raided a draft board in 1971—and got away with it. When the FBI arrested twenty-eight people in connection to a break-in at a Camden, New Jersey, draft board in 1971, the Bureau celebrated. The case should have been an easy victory for the department—the perpetrators had been caught red-handed attempting to destroy conscription documents for draftees into the Vietnam War. But the results of the trial surprised everyone, and in the process shook the foundations of American law, politics, and religion. In Spiritual Criminals, Michelle M. Nickerson shares a complex portrait of the Camden 28, a passionate group of grassroots religious progressives who resisted both their church and their government as they crusaded against the Vietnam War. Founded by priests, nuns, and devout lay Catholics, members of this coalition accepted the risks of felony convictions as the cost of challenging the nation’s military-industrial complex and exposing the illegal counterintelligence operations of the FBI. By peeling away the layers of political history, theological traditions, and the Camden 28’s personal stories, Nickerson reveals an often-unseen spiritual side of the anti-war movement. At the same time, she probes the fractures within the group, detailing important conflicts over ideology, race, sex, and gender that resonate in the church and on the political Left today.

Criminals are commonly found in police cells, in the prisons, in courts, in the streets or generally in dark and unholy places. But you may be surprised to know that there are actually criminals in the house of God. The state of the church these days is very lamentable. God is going to clean His house and any unprofitable tree shall be uprooted. A certain pastor had his congregation weighed on the scale by an angel of God. Out of 2,900 people in the church only 80 were ready for heaven. It will be very sad if the trumpet sounds!

Download or read book Wanted written by Chris Hoke and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interweaving his own story with moving vignettes and gritty experiences in hidden places, a jail chaplain and minister to Mexican gang and migrant worker communities chronicles his spiritual journey to the margins of society and reveals a subversive God who’s on the loose beyond the walls of the church, pursuing those who are unwanted by the world. Wanted follows a restless young man from the sunny suburbs of his youth to the darker side of society in the rainy Northwest, where he finds the direct spiritual experience he’s been seeking while volunteering as a “night shift” chaplain at a men’s correctional facility. The jail becomes his portal to a mysterious world on the margins of society, where a growing network of Mexican gang members soon dub him their “pastor.” As he comes to terms with this uncomfortable title—and embraces the role of a shepherd of black sheep—his adventures truly begin. Hoke shares comic, heartbreaking and sublime tales of sacred moments in unlikely situations: singing with an attempted-suicide in the jail’s isolation cell, dodging immigration and airport security with migrant farm workers, and fly-fishing with tattooed gangsters. Set against the misty Washington landscape, this unconventional congregation at times mirrors the Skagit Valley’s fleeting migratory swans and unseen salmon. But Hoke takes us with him into riskier terrain as he gains and loses friends to the prison system, and even faces his own despair—as well as belovedness—on the back of a motorcycle racing through Guatemalan slums. In these stories of “mystical portraiture,” like the old WANTED posters of outlaws, Hoke bears witness to an elusive Presence that is still alive and defiant of official custody. Such portraits offer a new vision of the forgotten souls who have been cast into society’s dumpsters, helping us see beneath even the hardest criminal a fragile desire to be wanted.

See how he responded to a threat to his family and himself by standing on the Word of God while outlining three types of Identity Theft that affect everyone. Book And the Criminals with Him

    Book Details:
  • Author : Will D. Campbell
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-07-20
  • ISBN : 161097946X

Download or read book And the Criminals with Him written by Will D. Campbell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972, Will Campbell published an issue of the Committee of Southern Churchmen's journal, Katallagete, to shed light on the US prison system. None could anticipate how the system would expand exponentially in the next four decades. Today, the US operates the world's largest prison system, incarcerating nearly 1 in every 100 American adults. How did this expansion happen? What is the human toll of this retributive system? How might "ambassadors of reconciliation" respond to such a punitive institution? Replicating the firsthand nature of Will Campbell's original Katallagete collection, twenty new essays pull back the veil on today's prison-industrial complex. The plea throughout this collection is not for some better, more progressive institution to exact justice. Rather, the invitation is to hear from voices of experience how the system functions, listen to what the institution does to those locked in its cells, consider what an execution involves, and, most importantly, contemplate the scandalous call to be in reconciled community with those whom society discards and the system silences. Our story is that there are neither good nor bad people, neither felon nor free world. We are all one.

Book Revelation a Letter to the Tribulation Christians and Those Left Behind

Download or read book Revelation a Letter to the Tribulation Christians and Those Left Behind written by James D. Elliott and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the books in our Most High God’s blessed word it is the book of Revelation that gives the body of Christ (1Corinthians 12:27) the most trepidation to study. In part because the book of Revelation is the foretelling of events that have not taking place, and it is in part due to the perception, by a majority in the body of Christ, that the book of Revelation is overly symbolic. But, in reality the book of Revelation is pretty straight forward. The word of God is replete in the books, chapters, and verses of God’s word that are either directly and/or indirectly related to the book of Revelation.

Book Rivers of Darkness Visions of Light

Download or read book Rivers of Darkness Visions of Light written by Larry A. Whited and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers of Darkness, Visions of Light: From Extortion to Salvation is the true story of an extortion attempt and of the life that both precedes and follows the decision to commit the crime. The story involves a maze of psychological and spiritual twists to maintain an element of growing suspense throughout. This true account is told with an unusual transparency, revealing normally hidden personal thoughts, vulnerabilities, and motivations. The first chapter opens with a glimpse into the tormented mind of a young child separated from life and love, and the second chapter has the reader swimming along with the author in the Mississippi River for five miles in a daring nighttime operation to pick up a packaged bundle of cash along a New Orleans riverbank. Action follows with the site being under continual and hidden surveillance by a seven-man team headed by the FBI. The story then reverts to the events that helped shape the life that brought about this crime, and a chronology unfolds throughout the next fourteen chapters that affords a view of human nature that is painfully honest, at times disturbing, and eventually uplifting as reconciliation with God and man is achieved. This is a story of one man reaching out to God, his finding only walls and silence, and his acting out of an absolute sense of futility and frustration. Then, when least expected as that life finally seemed to come together with a notable measure of success as a commercial deep sea diver in the Gulf of Mexico, the real story of life begins. The reader gets a front row seat with an unobstructed view to see how a life plays out when a person first rejects and then ultimately receives spiritual light.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide an overview for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clergy, corrections professionals, and volunteers of the role that chaplains play in assisting prison management in the rehabilitation of offenders in addition to their ministerial and administrative responsibilities. Organized into six sections, the first discusses the role chaplains play, the need for prison ministry, fundamental counseling skills, and social theories of crime. Chapter 2 is concerned with crime, delinquency theories, and substance abuse and its treatment and prevention. Chapter 3 discusses how ministry can be wholesome when family fears, poverty, classism, and other issues such as prostitution, juvenile justice, and education are confronted and dealt with. Chapter 4 presents issues concerned with parenting, self-esteem, guilt, anger, and managing negative emotions. Chapter 5 discusses the need for community support such as mentorship and minister of record involvement in the lives of inmates. It also presents Christian treatment modalities such as evangelism, discipleship, and spiritual formation in therapy. The final chapter discusses nontraditional religions encountered in prison, the Religious Freedom Reformation Act, cults, occults, volunteers, and how to organize a prison ministry. Book The Law of Possession

Download or read book The Law of Possession written by William Sturman Sax and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rituals combining healing with spirit possession and court-like proceedings are found around the world and throughout history. For example, a person suffers from an illness that cannot be cured, and in order to be healed he performs a ritual involving prosecution and defense, a judge and witnesses. Divine beings give evidence through human oracles, spirits possess their human victims and are exorcized, and local gods intervene to provide healing and justice. Such practices seem to be the very antithesis of modernity and many modern, secular states have systematically attempted to eliminate them. Why are such rituals largely absent from modern societies, and what happens to them when the state attempts to expunge them from their health and justice systems, or even to criminalize them? Despite the prevalence of rituals involving some or all of these elements, The Law of Possession represents the first attempt to compare and analyze them systematically. The volume brings together historical and contemporary case studies from East Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and argues that, despite consistent attempts by states to discourage, eliminate, and criminalize them, such rituals persist and even thrive because they meet widespread human needs.
