Book excerpt: "Spiritual Blackmail" is a timely story in the wake of the 50th anniversary of Vatican II and the recent dual canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. While the changes brought about by Vatican II were welcomed by many Catholics, they caused a great deal of consternation for others, including Sherri's parents. Their well-meaning choice to escape from what they believed was the "corruption" of their beloved Church and to join a renegade traditionalist group and its charismatic, abusive leader had significant, long-term effects on Sherri - effects that she continues to deal with as a Catholic in the 21st Century. "Spiritual Blackmail" testifies to the triumph of the human spirit in the face of spiritual turmoil, but also to the powerful truth that it is possible to find the good and a reason for gratitude even amid seeming abandonment and betrayal by those most trusted.

Book Franciscan Spirituality and Mission in New Spain 1524 1599

Download or read book Franciscan Spirituality and Mission in New Spain 1524 1599 written by Steven E. Turley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franciscans in sixteenth-century New Spain were deeply ambivalent about their mission work. Fray Juan de Zumárraga, the first archbishop of Mexico, begged the king to find someone else to do his job so that he could go home. Fray Juan de Ribas, one of the original twelve 'apostles of Mexico' and a founding pillar of the church in New Spain, later fled with eleven other friars into the wilderness to escape the demands of building that church. Fray Jerónimo de Mendieta, having returned from an important preaching tour in New Spain, wrote to his superior that he did not want to enlist again, and that the only way he would return to the mission field was if God dragged him by the hair. This discontent was widespread, grew stronger with time, and carried important consequences for the friars' interactions with indigenous peoples, their Catholic co-laborers, and colonial society at large. This book examines that discontent and seeks to explain why the exhilaration of joining such a 'glorious' enterprise so often gave way to grinding discontent. The core argument is that, despite St. Francis's own longing to do mission work, his followers in New Spain found that effective evangelization in a frontier context was fundamentally incompatible with their core spirituality. Bringing together two streams of historiography that have rarely overlapped - spirituality and missions - this book marks a strong contribution to the history of spirituality in both Latin America and Europe, as well as to the growing fields of transatlantic and world history.

Book Christian Missions and Humanitarianism in The Middle East 1850 1950

Download or read book Christian Missions and Humanitarianism in The Middle East 1850 1950 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early phases of modern missions, Christian missionaries supported many humanitarian activities, mostly framed as subservient to the preaching of Christianity. This anthology contributes to a historically grounded understanding of the complex relationship between Christian missions and the roots of humanitarianism and its contemporary uses in a Middle Eastern context. Contributions focus on ideologies, rhetoric, and practices of missionaries and their apostolates towards humanitarianism, from the mid-19th century Middle East crises, examining different missionaries, their society’s worldview and their networks in various areas of the Middle East. In the early 20th century Christian missions increasingly paid more attention to organisation and bureaucratisation (‘rationalisation’), and media became more important to their work. The volume analyses how non-missionaries took over, to a certain extent, the aims and organisations of the missionaries as to humanitarianism. It seeks to discover and retrace such ‘entangled histories’ for the first time in an integral perspective. Contributors include: Beth Baron, Philippe Bourmaud, Seija Jalagin, Nazan Maksudyan, Michael Marten, Heleen (L.) Murre-van den Berg, Inger Marie Okkenhaug, Idir Ouahes, Maria Chiara Rioli, Karène Sanchez Summerer, Bertrand Taithe, and Chantal Verdeil

Book Living with Mental Illness in a Globalised World

Download or read book Living with Mental Illness in a Globalised World written by Ugo Ikwuka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living with Mental Illness in a Globalised World systematically examines the manifold contributions to the burdens of living with mental illness in a developing and globalised world. It explores the stigma of mental illness, the burden of which compares to the symptoms of and is sometimes considered more disabling than the illness itself. The book starts by reviewing the socio-psychological and cultural processes that contribute to stigma and providing evidence-based interventions to combat it. Chapters critically investigate the ideological and instrumental barriers to mental healthcare and establish that determining the conceptualisations of mental illness helps to unravel the reasons for the underutilisation of mental health services. A compelling case is made for a complementary healthcare model and bottom-up approach that is sensitive to the spiritual and cultural needs of the people. The text’s specific examination of mental healthcare in African countries makes it a timely piece for assisting mental health professionals in understanding the inequities in care that Black Asian and Minority Ethnic groups face and how to improve mental healthcare and delivery to these groups.

Book Degenerate Moderns

  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Degenerate Moderns written by E. Michael Jones and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking new book, Jones shows how some of the major determining leaders in modern thought and culture have rationalized their own immoral behavior and projected it onto a universal canvas. The main thesis of this book is that, in the intellectual life, there are only two ultimate alternatives: either the thinker conforms desire to truth or he conforms truth to desire. In the last one hundred years, the western cultural elite embarked upon a project which entailed the reversal of the values of the intellectual life so that truth would be subjected to desire as the final criterion of intellectual value. In looking at recent biographies of such major moderns as Freud, Kinsey, Keynes, Margaret Mead, Picasso, and others, there is a remarkable similarity between their lives and thought. After becoming involved in sexual license early on, they invariably chose an ideology or art form which subordinated reality to the exigencies of their sexual misbehavior.

Download or read book Authority Abusers written by George Bloomer and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when authority is abused? Imagine our nation without police officers. Imagine our lives without the protection of the badge. Imagine traveling without stop signs, traffic signals, and roadside warnings. Imagine no violations, no punishments--a grade school playground without rules, a government without leaders... You might as well imagine the earth without gravity, because without authority, there would be chaos. But what happens when authority is misused? Or worse, what happens when spiritual abuse is written off as “authority”? As surely as the absence of authority produces chaos, the abuse of authority produces destruction. Countless people have fallen victim to the manipulation of power and authority. Lives have been warped forever, marriages have been destroyed, women and children have been abused, and husbands and fathers undermined within the boundaries of their home. Also, tragically, it’s inside the church--where salvation, healing, freedom, and love should abound--that some of the worst authority abuse takes place. God’s design for authority has been misunderstood, twisted, and manipulated, leaving innocent people as victims and prisoners of controlling, abusive situations. The wounded and weak have been preyed upon, and the guilty have been frightened into submission by leaders who use people to improve their own self-esteem or advance their careers. Wake up!!! This is not God’s design for the church--or authority. In this book, Bishop George Bloomer discusses: Gods true design for authority Why people abuse authority The effects of authority abuse in the home How to recognize an authority abuser God’s restoration plan for the abused and the abuser The key to breaking free from the bondage of spiritual abuse
