Book When the Spirit Says Sing

Download or read book When the Spirit Says Sing written by Kerran L. Sanger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995-12-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1950s and early 1960s, such songs as "We Shall Overcome," "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize," and "Do What the Spirit Says Do" were sung at virtually every mass meeting, demonstration, and planning session of Civil Rights activists. They were sung on the Freedom Rides, during the marches, and in jail cells of the South. Movement activists have commented frequently and eloquently on the ways that singing and songs gave them strength and a sense of self. This study offers a close analysis of the lyrics of the songs most central to the Civil Rights Movement, with an eye to understanding the songs as self-persuasion. In the songs, the activists defined themselves and their world, and reinforced a plan of action for their participation in the Movement. This analysis of the freedom songs is set in the context of Movement history and supported with commentary from activists and background information on Movement activities. In addition, this study offers readers insights into the moving and inspiring power of the freedom songs.

In this fable-like story three musicians from around the world are mysteriously summoned to Nashville, the Music City, to join together with Victor to do battle against the "Phasers," whose blinking "music-cancelling" headphones silence and destroy all musical sound. Only by coming together, connecting, and making the joyful sounds of immediate, "live" music can the world be restored to the power and spirit of music. A VINTAGE ORIGINAL

Book excerpt: Unique, Powerful Way All Believers Can Experience Breakthrough In the Bible, Moses sang. Miriam sang. So did Deborah, David, Mary, Paul, the angels, and so many more. The Israelites went to war singing; they sang over victories, over happy moments and hard moments. They knew something we've lost sight of: When we learn to sing God's words back to Him, we align the deepest spaces of our hearts with the deepest places of His--and we experience breakthrough. So why do we relegate singing the Word to just worship teams? Julie Meyer, a Dove-nominated artist and worship leader, has been teaching all believers how to do just this. She shows that you don't need to know how to read music or even sing in tune. All you need is Scripture and a willingness to engage God in song. As you do, you will see heartache turn into hope, despair into destiny, fear into fearlessness. You stand on the Word, pray it, and even memorize it. Now it's time to sing it.

Wooten comes an inspiring parable of music, life, and the difference between playing all the right notes…and feeling them. The Music Lesson is the story of a struggling young musician who wanted music to be his life, and who wanted his life to be great. Then, from nowhere it seemed, a teacher arrived. Part musical genius, part philosopher, part eccentric wise man, the teacher would guide the young musician on a spiritual journey, and teach him that the gifts we get from music mirror those from life, and every movement, phrase, and chord has its own meaning...All you have to do is find the song inside. “The best book on music (and its connection to the mystic laws of life) that I've ever read. I learned so much on every level.”—Multiple Grammy Award–winning saxophonist Michael Brecker

Book excerpt: Anyone who's gotten so mad they could scream, or let out a mellow sigh of relief, knows that the voice is a powerful tool for releasing emotions. In this beautifully written guide, singer and teacher Shawna Carol shows how to harness the power of the voice as a means of self-expression and spiritual growth. Using her SpiritSong method, Carol encourages you to sing-whether or not you have what is commonly considered a "good voice." Stripping away the mystique, fear, and perfectionism that so often surround singing, she begins with simple breathing exercises and builds to simple toning, followed by more complete songs. The goal is a feeling of openness, connection, and freedom that comes from self-expression. The singing itself can be done with or without words, alone or in a group. Whether or not you can read music, or even carry a tune, The Way of Song illuminates a sure path to reconnecting with the joy and the power of singing.

Book Singing of Psalms the Duty of Christians

Download or read book Singing of Psalms the Duty of Christians written by Thomas Ford and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritans believed in Exclusive Psalmody – and the Westminster Confession demonstrates their position. However, there are few works that were written as a whole explaining why this is so. This work by Thomas Ford does just that. As a member of the Assembly his views demonstrate the majority view in Christendom up and until his era, and he sits in company with the best theologians and preachers through church history on the subject. He covers, 1. That we must sing. 2. What we must sing. 3. How we must sing. And, 4. Why we must sing. His main text is Ephesians 5:19, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…” This is an extremely valuable treatise dealing with the worship of the Living God – something Christians should take seriously so that their worship is true, regulated and taught to them by God. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
