  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0199942129
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book The Spirit Moves West written by Rebecca Y. Kim and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the extraordinary growth of Christianity in the global south has come the rise of "reverse missions," in which countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America send missionaries to re-evangelize the West. In The Spirit Moves West, Rebecca Kim uses South Korea as a case study of how non-Western missionaries target Americans, particularly white Americans. She draws on four years of interviews, participant observation, and surveys of South Korea's largest non-denominational missionary-sending agency, University Bible Fellowship, in order to provide an inside look at this growing phenomenon. Known as the "Asian Protestant Superpower," South Korea is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it sends abroad: approximately 22,000 in over 160 countries. Conducting her research both in the US and in South Korea, Kim studies the motivations and methods of these Korean evangelicals who have, since the 1970s, sought to "bring the gospel back" to America. By offering the first empirically-grounded examination of this much-discussed phenomenon, Kim explores what non-Western missions will mean to the future of Christianity in America and around the world.

Book When the Spirit Moves

Download or read book When the Spirit Moves written by Vincent Goddard and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Vince's memoir, When the Spirit Moves, is a carefully crafted literary exposition of the faithful journey of a poor, Jamaican born Englishman. Yet, because of its articulated integrity and spiritual candour, unnumbered thousands of Caribbean peoples will find this miraculous saga irresistible. It has regional and international attractions and identifications baked into its articulated fibre. Perhaps, one of the most interesting aspects of this easy-to-read, but hard to put down autobiography is the fact that the content generates emotional turbulence. Yet, at the same time, it provides hope and comfort, peace and pleasure, vision and faith all wrapped securely in a sound Biblical theological blanket. What Pastor Vince humbly permitted God to do in his life and with his lifestyle, drowns out most excuses for living a life without purpose. His story takes away excuses for not being all that God intends for one to become. It leaves no excuses for failures. By the grace of God, Pastor Vince made quality decisions and did many magnanimous things that most people generally fail to do. Ironically, Pastor Vince, like so many Caribbean and African peoples whose lands and treasures were borrowed, destroyed or stolen, had the courage to forgive and forget the colonial history. Most interestingly, they risked life, in many instances, to leave their native lands and journey to the very heart of the socio-political and economic global empire that once oppressed. They took advantage of available opportunities that enabled them to survive and thrive through hard work, education and raw faith in themselves and a sanctified faith in Almighty God.

Book If The Spirit Moves You

Download or read book If The Spirit Moves You written by Justine Picardie and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an introduction by Andrew O'Hagan When I think about her now, which is most of the time, it's like rewinding a silent film in my head: I see the crucial scenes in our lives together. But what I can't hear is her voice in my head, and that silence is driving me crazy. After her sister Ruth's death from breast cancer in September 1997, Justine Picardie was desperate to speak to her again, to hear her voice, to find something - anything - that might fill the space she had left behind. Over the course of the next year, Justine's search for Ruth lead her into the underworld of spiritualism, through a series of encounters with mediums and psychics who believe that we can communicate with those we have lost. If the Spirit Moves You is Justine's remarkable story about her search for the afterlife in an age of reason, scepticism and science. Powerfully moving, both heart-breaking and funny, it is an extraordinary classic about the exhausting journey of grief and the enduring power of love.

Book Revivals Visitations And Moves Of God

Download or read book Revivals Visitations And Moves Of God written by and published by All Peoples Church & World Outreach, Bangalore, India. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revival is bringing something that is dead back to life. Much of today’s Church needs reviving. When God comes in an unusual way, releasing His presence and power over and above what a church normally experiences, we call it a visitation of God. Every visitation of God should become a habitation of God and become a move of God, going beyond that local church into the community, city, and nation. The move of God results in evangelization, missions, and the fulfilling of the Great Commission. Starting in the book of Acts and down through the centuries, there have been numerous visitations and moves of God. We look at Church history. Understanding history helps us correctly interpret the present and prepare for the future. We draw inspiration, insight, and lessons from what God has done in the past, by reviewing stories, and asking relevant questions: What can we learn from Church history about revivals, visitations, and moves of God? What does it take for a visitation of God to become a move of God? What are signs of a genuine visitation of God? How do we steward a revival, a visitation, and a move of God? The “latter rain” falls just before harvest. “Therefore, be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:7-8). In biblical context, the early rains were showers that usually came during October-November and prepared the ground for the seed. The latter rain fell during March-April and was necessary for the ripening of the crops before harvest. If we believe God is preparing for a mighty endtime outpouring, a great visitation, and ingathering of harvest before His return, then we must get ourselves and our congregations ready for the latter rain of the Holy Spirit. Book Touching Spirit Bear

Download or read book Touching Spirit Bear written by Ben Mikaelsen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Nautilus Award-winning classic Touching Spirit Bear, author Ben Mikaelson delivers a powerful coming-of-age story of a boy who must overcome the effects that violence has had on his life. After severely injuring Peter Driscal in an empty parking lot, mischief-maker Cole Matthews is in major trouble. But instead of jail time, Cole is given another option: attend Circle Justice, an alternative program that sends juvenile offenders to a remote Alaskan Island to focus on changing their ways. Desperate to avoid prison, Cole fakes humility and agrees to go. While there, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and left for dead. Thoughts of his abusive parents, helpless Peter, and his own anger cause him to examine his actions and seek redemption—from the spirit bear that attacked him, from his victims, and, most importantly, from himself. Ben Mikaelsen paints a vivid picture of a juvenile offender, examining the roots of his anger without absolving him of responsibility for his actions, and questioning a society in which angry people make victims of their peers and communities. Touching Spirit Bear is a poignant testimonial to the power of a pain that can destroy, or lead to healing. A strong choice for independent reading, sharing in the classroom, homeschooling, and book groups.
