Book Quest for the Kingdom

Download or read book Quest for the Kingdom written by John M. Newman and published by John Michael Newman. This book was released on 2011 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating analysis that blends world history, Western religion, and Eastern mysticism, Quest for the Kingdom by Dr. John M. Newman examines the "kingdom of God" as the historical Jesus describes it. The book's premise holds that Jesus' teachings include specific instructions for the quest to find and live in God's kingdom before death. This powerful work favors fact, and readers can revel in Jesus' authentic teachings that describe the quest both as internal spiritual cultivation and the way to live in the world. It is rare for a book on Christian theology to break new ground, but Newman does this on two fronts: the striking parallel of Jesus' teachings with the ancient mysticism of yoga and the equally fascinating parallel between Jesus' healing techniques and the practices of modern psychotherapists like Freud. Newman is meticulous in drawing these original and unique parallels and they lift this work's premise to a non-generic level that speaks to several audiences, an accomplishment that sets the work apart from the pack. In twenty accessible and engaging chapters like "The Kingdom of God," "The War of the Houses," "The Kingdom Is Like a Woman," "Spiritual Cultivation," and "The Exorcisms and Healings of Jesus," the reader watches Jesus at work, healing and offering his parables at a communal meal. In addition to elucidating the path to the kingdom that Jesus shared with his followers, Newman explains and illustrates the voice print of Jesus-his sage rhetorical strategies and distinctive discourse. Newman brings Jesus' parables to life with a penetrating analysis that enables the reader to experience Jesus' mastery of metaphor and management of the unconscious trajectory of thought in the minds of his listeners. A commanding new breakthrough in the understanding of the teachings and works of Jesus, this book is a must-read for academics and laypersons alike.

Book The Scriptures of Won Buddhism

Download or read book The Scriptures of Won Buddhism written by Bongkil Chung and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Won Buddhism, one of the major religions of modern Korea, was established in 1916 by Pak Chung-bin (1891–1943), later known as Sot’aesan. In 1943 Sot’aesan published a collection of Buddhist writings, the Correct Canon of Buddhism (Pulgyo chongjon), which included the doctrine of his new order. Four years later, the second patriarch, Chongsan (1900–1962), had the order compile a new canon, which was published in 1962. This work, translated here as The Scriptures of Won Buddhism (Wonbulgyo kyojon), consists of the Canon (a redaction of the first part of the Pulgyo chongjon) and the analects and chronicle of the founder known as the Scripture of Sot’aesan. The present translation incorporates critical tenets from the 1943 Canon that were altered in the redaction process and offers persuasive arguments for their re-inclusion.

Book The Literati Path to Immortality The Alchemical Teachings of Lu Xixing

Download or read book The Literati Path to Immortality The Alchemical Teachings of Lu Xixing written by Ilia Mozias and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Literati Path explores the life and teachings of the Ming author and alchemist Lu Xixing (1520-1601). It begins by examining his biography, religious community, alchemical doctrine, and methods of practice. Lu was special in that he embodied the literati tradition of self-cultivation, engaging in the alchemical arts without ever leaving his habitual life. He did not abandon his family, was never ordained, and had no connection to Daoist or other institutions. He learned internal alchemy from books and through spirit-writing seances where he met Lü Dongbin and other immortals. Next, the work expounds the cosmological doctrines at the foundation of internal alchemy, including those found in the Yijing and the Cantong qi, and outlines the universal ebb and flow of yin and yang as the basis of the immortal elixir. It moves on to describe just how the practice serves to overcome destiny, modeling techniques on biological gestation and creating a new being deep within. It explains major alchemical concepts as applied by Lu Xixing and systematically describes his path to immortality, all the while questioning the validity of his reputation as a sexual alchemist. Shedding fascinating new light on the religious life of Ming literati and providing a first access to a unique take on internal alchemy in late imperial China, The Literati Path to Immortality is a must for anyone interested in traditional Chinese religion and culture!

Book Making Saints in Modern China

Download or read book Making Saints in Modern China written by David Ownby and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sainthood" has been, and remains, a contested category in China, given the commitment of China's modern leadership to secularization, modernization, and revolution, and the discomfort of China's elite with matters concerning religion. However, sainted religious leaders have succeeded in rebuilding old institutions and creating new ones despite the Chinese government's censure. This book offers a new perspective on the history of religion in modern and contemporary China by focusing on the profiles of these religious leaders from the early 20th century through the present. Edited by noted authorities in the field of Chinese religion, Making Saints in Modern China offers biographies of prominent Daoists and Buddhists, as well as of the charismatic leaders of redemptive societies and state managers of religious associations in the People's Republic. The focus of the volume is largely on figures in China proper, although some attention is accorded to those in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other areas of the Chinese diaspora. Each chapter offers a biography of a religious leader and a detailed discussion of the way in which he or she became a "saint." The biographies illustrate how these leaders deployed and sometimes retooled traditional themes in hagiography and charismatic communication to attract followers and compete in the religious marketplace. Negotiation with often hostile authorities was also an important aspect of religious leadership, and many of the saints' stories reveal unexpected reserves of creativity and determination. The volume's contributors, from the United States, Canada, France, Italy, China, and Taiwan, provide cutting-edge scholarship. Taken together, these essays make the case that vital religious leadership and practice has existed and continues to exist in China despite the state's commitment to wholesale secularization.
