Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between the American Revolution and the U.S. Civil War, as legal and cultural understandings of citizenship became more racially restrictive, black writers articulated an expansive, practice-based theory of citizenship. Grounded in political participation, mutual aid, critique and revolution, and the myriad daily interactions between people living in the same spaces, citizenship, they argued, is not defined by who one is but, rather, by what one does. In The Practice of Citizenship, Derrick R. Spires examines the parallel development of early black print culture and legal and cultural understandings of U.S. citizenship, beginning in 1787, with the framing of the federal Constitution and the founding of the Free African Society by Absalom Jones and Richard Allen, and ending in 1861, with the onset of the Civil War. Between these two points he recovers understudied figures such as William J. Wilson, whose 1859 "Afric-American Picture Gallery" appeared in seven installments in The Anglo-African Magazine, and the physician, abolitionist, and essayist James McCune Smith. He places texts such as the proceedings of black state conventions alongside considerations of canonical figures such as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and Frederick Douglass. Reading black print culture as a space where citizenship was both theorized and practiced, Spires reveals the degree to which concepts of black citizenship emerged through a highly creative and diverse community of letters, not easily reducible to representative figures or genres. From petitions to Congress to Frances Harper's parlor fiction, black writers framed citizenship both explicitly and implicitly, the book demonstrates, not simply as a response to white supremacy but as a matter of course in the shaping of their own communities and in meeting their own political, social, and cultural needs.
Download or read book The Sun Is a Compass written by Caroline Van Hemert and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Cheryl Strayed, the gripping story of a biologist's human-powered journey from the Pacific Northwest to the Arctic to rediscover her love of birds, nature, and adventure. During graduate school, as she conducted experiments on the peculiarly misshapen beaks of chickadees, ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert began to feel stifled in the isolated, sterile environment of the lab. Worried that she was losing her passion for the scientific research she once loved, she was compelled to experience wildness again, to be guided by the sounds of birds and to follow the trails of animals. In March of 2012, she and her husband set off on a 4,000-mile wilderness journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic, traveling by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe. Together, they survived harrowing dangers while also experiencing incredible moments of joy and grace -- migrating birds silhouetted against the moon, the steamy breath of caribou, and the bond that comes from sharing such experiences. A unique blend of science, adventure, and personal narrative, The Sun is a Compass explores the bounds of the physical body and the tenuousness of life in the company of the creatures who make their homes in the wildest places left in North America. Inspiring and beautifully written, this love letter to nature is a lyrical testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Winner of the 2019 Banff Mountain Book Competition: Adventure Travel
Download or read book Kate s Light written by Elizabeth Spires and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heroic true story of one of the Eastern seaboard's first woman lighthouse keepers, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist. Living in the isolated Robbins Reef Lighthouse, overlooking turn-of-the-century New York Harbor, Kate Walker spent her life minding the light, keeping passing ships from running aground on the dangerous shoals. Originally the assistant to her lighthouse keeper husband John Walker, after his death Kate convinced the Lighthouse Board that she was able to manage the hard work on her own. For more than three decades, Kate lived a solitary life, often totally isolated from the mainland by rough seas and dangerous storms. Tending to the lamps and ringing the heavy warning bell, she helped ships avert disaster-- and saved many sailors from the cold, choppy waters when disaster struck. Elizabeth Spires describes the joys and hardships of a life at sea, detailing pivotal moments in Walker's life to show her indomitable spirit, and celebrates the determination that drove Kate to keep her home and her livelihood. Paired with Emily Arnold McCully's atmospheric, vivid watercolor-and-ink illustrations of lonely lighthouses, sun-dappled afternoons, and wrathful storms, this gripping picture book brings turn of the century New York to life. Additional material in the back of the book includes a biographical note about Kate Walker, historical photographs of Kate and her home at Robbins Reef Lighthouse, reproductions of an historical map of New York Harbor, and a list of sources for more information. Download or read book The Spire written by William Golding and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succumb to one churchman's apocalyptic vision in this prophetic tale by the radical Nobel Laureate and author of Lord of the Flies, William Golding (recorded by Benedict Cumberbatch as an audiobook). There were three sorts of people. Those who ran, those who stayed, and those who were built in. Dean Jocelin has a vision: that God has chosen him to erect a great spire. His master builder fearfully advises against it, for the old cathedral was miraculously built without foundations. But Jocelin is obsessed with fashioning his prayer in stone. As his halo of hair grows wilder and his dark angel darker, the spire rises octagon upon octagon, pinnacle by pinnacle, watched over by the gargoyles - until the stone pillars shriek, the earth beneath creeps, and the spire's shadow falls like an axe on the medieval world below ... 'Astounding ... So recklessly beautiful, so sad and so strange ... Holds such a place in my soul that it's more or less a sacred text.' Sarah Perry 'A kind of miracle ... Genius.' Guardian ' Quite simply, a marvel.' NYRB ' Superb ... A classic.' Rebecca West 'A master fabulist .. An iconoclast.' John Fowles 'A visionary ... His masterwork [of] faith, folly and desperate desire ... Golding at his best.' Benjamin Myers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunlight on Shadow is a memoir, not just of a life, but of a small nation continually sucked into the wars of the powerful . The story is told through the lives of three diverse families: an intellectual medical family, a struggling civil servants family and one historically prominent family. The author is your guide to history that is little known and almost never included in any history class. The story begins with the parents of the author, they slowly tell their daughter of their experiences in WWII and how they survived. They also take the risk of telling her the truth, not the propaganda. Life for Hungarians post war was a misery of fear, despair, and fight to survive. Survival is not just a struggle for the body, it is also a silent never ending fight to hold on to humanity and dignity and truth. It is in this atmosphere that the author slowly becomes the memory keeper, first for her mother and later as a woman for her aunts, father and her mother in law. Long before that, Zsofi learns to treasure her moments of sunshine and to understand the importance of love and respect in family and friendship. History continues to disrupt and the family flees into exile. The new world provides safety and opportunity, but it is strange and unknown. It is a struggle for a girl coming of age Hungarian in America. Within the shelter of the emigre community she finds life with a fellow Hungarian. Together they build a life very much based on the life they lost. While they raise three children, and welcome a lonely boy into their midst they travel often to Budapest and there learn all the things they could not as children. Most important they learn to keep and teach their heritage and live where life has swept them.

Download or read book In the Beacon Light Lambertville NJ 1860 to 1900 written by Sharon Bisaha and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-23 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the person familiar with Lambertville and interested in its history there are many details; the city's growth, modernization, conflicts, and entertainments. There is a more universal story here as well. The years commencing with the Civil War and ending with the Spanish American War are often labeled the Victorian Age. It was a period of industrialization, westward expansion, invention, and social upheaval. These movements have been researched and described in many books of American history. By examining the local columns of a newspaper, one gets a glimpse into the impact these larger events and movements had on ordinary life. A historic movement, a new invention, a political shift arouses the historian's analysis and paints our picture of the times. But how did the ordinary individual who was living at that time see and experience these historic events? This book addresses this question.
