Surveys were made at five stations along the model, at angles of attack of zero and four degrees, with and without spin. Tests with spin were performed at Mach 3.02. The pitot pressure data has been used to compute boundary-layer velocity profiles, and results from two data-reduction procedures are presented. Some comparisons are made with theoretical velocity profiles for the zero spin, zero angle-of-attack case. (Author).

Yet these familiar flying objects have subtle and clever aerodynamic and gyrodynamic properties which are only recently being documented by wind tunnel and other studies. In common with other rotating bodies discussed in this readily accessible book, they are typically not treated in textbooks of aeronautics and the literature is scattered in a variety of places. This book develops the theme of disc-wings and spinning aerospace vehicles in parallel. Since many of the examples are recreational, anyone who enjoys these activities will likely find it profitable and enjoyable. In addition to spinning objects of various shapes, several exotic manned aircraft with disc planforms have been proposed and a prototypes built – these include a Nazi ‘secret weapon’ and the De Havilland Avrocar, also discussed in the book. Boomerangs represent another category of spinning aerodynamic body whose behavior can only be understood by coupling aerodynamics with gyrodynamics. The narrative, supported by equations and graphs, explains how the shape and throw of a boomerang relates to its trajectory. The natural world presents still other examples, namely the samaras or ‘seed-wings’ of many tree species, which autorotate during their descent, like a helicopter whose engine has failed. The flight performance of these spinning wings directly affects the dispersal and thus the evolutionary competitiveness of the trees concerned. Samara-type configurations are also considered for instrumentation and other payload dispersal applications. In short, the book discusses a range of familiar, connected, but largely undeveloped, topics in an accessible, but complete, manner. Rotta, born on January 1, 1912, started his outstanding career in an unusual way, namely in a drawing office (1928 - 1931). At the same time he - as a purely self taught perso- took a correspondence course in airplane construction. From 1934 to 1945 he worked in the aircraft industry on different subjects in the fields of flight mechanics, structures, air craft design, and aerodynamics. In 1945 he moved to Gottingen and worked from that time at the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA, now DFVLR) and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Stromungsforschung (1947-1958), interrupted only by a stay in the U. S. at the Glenn L. Martin Company (1954 - 1955) and a visiting professorship at the Laval University in Quebec, Canada (1956). Already during his activities in industry, Dr. Rotta discovered his special liking for aerodynamics. In Gottingen, he was attracted by Ludwig Prandtl's discussions about problems associated with turbulence and in particular his new contribution to fully developed turbulence, published in 1945. At that time, W. Heisenberg and C. F. v. Weizacker pub lished their results on the energy spectra of isotropic turbu lence at large wave numbers. Since that time his main research interest in reasearch has been in turbulence problems.
