Book The Spin Structure of the Proton

Download or read book The Spin Structure of the Proton written by Steven D. Bass and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton''s spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton''s spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small OCo only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton''s spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (159 KB). Contents: Spin Experiments and Data; Dispersion Relations and Spin Sum Rules; g 1 Spin Sum Rules; Fixed Poles; The Axial Anomaly, Gluon topology and g (0) A; Chiral Symmetry and Axial U(1) Dynamics; QCD Inspired Models of the Proton Spin Problem; The Spin-Flavour Structure of the Proton; QCD Fits to g 1 Data; Polarized Quark Distributions; Polarized Glue o g(x, Q 2 ); Transversity; Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Exclusive Processes; Polarized Photon Structure Functions; Conclusions and Open Questions: How Does the Proton Spin?. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the most recent results from the field of quark-gluon structure of the nucleon, in particular how the spin of the nucleon is shared by its constituents. After very intriguing results from CERN and SLAC at the end of the 1980s, the last decade has seen a set of second-generation experiments at high energy accelerators that have yielded precise information on the solution of the 'Spin Crisis' - as well as opening up new questions. The articles are written by experts from the leading collaboration and theory groups as well as providing an expert summary of the state of the art, the book points the way to future research directions. Its main focus is on semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements of deep inelastic lepton scattering, which enables for the first time the determination of the flavor-separated quark spin distributions. Future developments on generalized parton distributions and their interpretation as well as the transverse spin structure are also covered. An indispensable volume for all working in hadronic physics.

Book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Field Theory and Perturbative String Theory

Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Field Theory and Perturbative String Theory written by Hisham Sati and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual progress in fundamental theoretical physics is linked with the search for the suitable mathematical structures that model the physical systems. Quantum field theory (QFT) has proven to be a rich source of ideas for mathematics for a long time. However, fundamental questions such as ``What is a QFT?'' did not have satisfactory mathematical answers, especially on spaces with arbitrary topology, fundamental for the formulation of perturbative string theory. This book contains a collection of papers highlighting the mathematical foundations of QFT and its relevance to perturbative string theory as well as the deep techniques that have been emerging in the last few years. The papers are organized under three main chapters: Foundations for Quantum Field Theory, Quantization of Field Theories, and Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theories. An introduction, written by the editors, provides an overview of the main underlying themes that bind together the papers in the volume.

Book Experimental Studies Of Boson Fields In Solids

Download or read book Experimental Studies Of Boson Fields In Solids written by Ulrich Kobler and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new understanding of the large amount of experimental results gained in solid state physics during the last seven decades. For more than 160 different materials, data analyses shown in terms of atomistic models (Hamiltonians) have not provided a quantitatively satisfactory description of either excitation spectra or dynamic properties. Instead, the experimental evidences have elaborated that field theories are necessary. However, most experimentalists are not familiar with field theories, and realistic field theories of magnetism are absent. The book illustrates in an empirical way the elements of future field theories of solid state physics with special emphasis on magnetic materials. In contrast to the many available textbooks on quantum field theories that emphasize more on algorithmic formalities rather than referring to the experimental facts, the approach in this book is pragmatic instead of abstract theoretic. This methodical concept considerably facilitates experimentalists to get acquainted with the basic ideas of field theories, even if a ready field theory is not provided by this experimental study.

The proceedings of this summer school will help young researchers understand these topics and appreciate the importance of existing and expected data. This volume is the first of a series on the summer schools and workshops at the Institute for Nuclear Theory, which was opened at the University of Washington following the recommendation of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. The formation of this national institute was a response by the nuclear physics comunity to the shortage of nuclear theorists vis-a-vis experimentalists.

Book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics

Download or read book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics written by Teruya Shinjo and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview is a brief introduction to the subjects covered by this book, nanomagnetism and spintronics. The discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect is described together with a short summary of the studies prior to the experiments on GMR. Studies on various kinds of magnetoresistance (MR) effect that were inspired by the GMR effect are reviewed and recent topics are introduced. In many novel phenomena involving the interplay of electric conductance and magnetization, the role of the “spin current” has been revealed to be important and the possibility for exploiting these phenomena in spintronics devices has been suggested. Nanoscale devices are indispensable to fundamental studies on spintronics and also to various technical devices, and therefore gaining an understanding of nanomagnetism is a crucial current issue. At the end of this section, the scope of this book is described in brief with the content of each chapter.

Book Testing Qcd Through Spin Observables In Nuclear Targets

Download or read book Testing Qcd Through Spin Observables In Nuclear Targets written by Jian-ping Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited talks and contributed papers presented at the workshop on “Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets”, held at the University of Virginia in April 2002.The workshop was proposed in the context of the large number of experiments that have used polarized deuterons or polarized 3He to extract information about the spin parameters of the neutron. The motivation for this workshop was to study the effects of the nuclear medium on the spin properties of the bound nucleon and to explore issues in QCD that might be resolved through spin observables in nuclear targets: What is the effect of the nuclear medium on the measured asymmetries? How have the latest results on the spin structure of the nucleon and the nucleon form factors changed our thinking? What advances are anticipated in the development of polarized targets?
