Book excerpt: This book contains the daily, sometimes hourly, adventures of a 30-something special agent for the United States Secret Service in Los Angeles, California. The book is a work of fiction, but the author Scott Racek is a twenty-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service. Scott adds a sense of realism to an otherwise surreal life of adventures in a seemingly endless thread of actions, some related, some not. The main character, Robert “Race” Krocak, is a former U.S. Navy SEAL, an automobile collector, and, for the last three years, a U.S. Secret Service Agent assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office. Race has been on loan to a Federal FBI task force against terrorism along with representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, the Los Angeles Police Department, U.S. Customs, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the CIA. He has been called out on a weekend to assist the CIA in surveilling the meet between planners of an assassination attempt of a foreign leader on U.S. soil. This takes Race on both a new adventure and an unfinished old adventure. Both adventures are life- threatening, and Race must meet both threats head on, if he is to survive. The story takes more turns as the plan gets implemented for the imminent threat. Hold on in this rollercoaster ride with a lot of turns and a few new twists, and enjoy the ride.

Book Lessons From the Edge

Download or read book Lessons From the Edge written by Jana Matthews and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurs often struggle with many aspects of business: planning and financing company growth, creating a company vision, recruiting, leading, and managing people, as well as personal costs. In Lessons from the Edge, more than 50 business owners and entrepreneurs offer a wealth of real-life stories--in their own words--that provide rare insights about keeping a company healthy and growing. Here is a unique collection of first-person accounts by entrepreneurs who describe their mistakes in business and the lessons they have learned as a result. The stories cover a wide range of experiences from the trials and tribulations of partnerships, to the loss of key customers, theft, finding and retaining employees, and the personal cost of living on the edge. The authors have drawn on interviews with more than 50 entrepreneurs, all of whom are under 45 years of age and are founders or presidents of companies with revenues over $1 million and growing rapidly. They volunteered to share their stories, describing why they lost or almost lost their companies, what they did wrong, and the lessons they have learned. Their narratives are full of mistakes, failure, courage, moments of realization, and timely moves that saved the day. Every company owner will find these accounts insightful, compelling, and occasionally gut wrenching, especially because most face similar challenges and live with the reality that they too could fall off the edge. This instructive and inspiring book brims with lessons for all business owners about courage, persistence, and survival. Lessons from the Edge is an essential read for both established and prospective entrepreneurs.

Book excerpt: Although a work of fiction, Never Summer is based on real events. The novel breathes life into one of the most colorful episodes in Colorado history, the epic battle over Bowen Gulch. In this action-packed tale, a handful of gutsy activists take on the state's powerful logging industry. The young hero, Tom Lacey, just out of college, finds himself torn between the work he has grown to love and a dawning awareness of issues bigger than himself. The delicate intersection of real history and the imagination makes for a powerful coming-of-age story, embellished with an exquisite love affair and some hilarious hi-jinks. The events are set in the late 1980s, before cell phones and the consolidation of the US media; giving the story a nostalgic appeal. The novel spares no effort to accurately portray the state's ecology and the logging culture of the day, down to the smallest details, against a breathtaking natural backdrop.

Book The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History written by Kenneth E. Hendrickson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As editor Kenneth E. Hendrickson, III, notes in his introduction: “Since the end of the nineteenth-century, industrialization has become a global phenomenon. After the relative completion of the advanced industrial economies of the West after 1945, patterns of rapid economic change invaded societies beyond western Europe, North America, the Commonwealth, and Japan.” In The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History contributors survey the Industrial Revolution as a world historical phenomenon rather than through the traditional lens of a development largely restricted to Western society. The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History is a three-volume work of over 1,000 entries on the rise and spread of the Industrial Revolution across the world. Entries comprise accessible but scholarly explorations of topics from the “aerospace industry” to “zaibatsu.” Contributor articles not only address topics of technology and technical innovation but emphasize the individual human and social experience of industrialization. Entries include generous selections of biographical figures and human communities, with articles on entrepreneurs, working men and women, families, and organizations. They also cover legal developments, disasters, and the environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution. Each entry also includes cross-references and a brief list of suggested readings to alert readers to more detailed information. The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution in World History includes over 300 illustrations, as well as artfully selected, extended quotations from key primary sources, from Thomas Malthus’ “Essay on the Principal of Population” to Arthur Young’s look at Birmingham, England in 1791. This work is the perfect reference work for anyone conducting research in the areas of technology, business, economics, and history on a world historical scale.

Ex-Marine Force Recon Officer and Milwaukee Police Detective, Declan Tomczyk, is dispatched to investigate the desecration of headstones at Holy Cross Cemetery. What first appears to be the work of vandals becomes something far more alarming. Tomczyk has come upon a trip wire connected to a crude homemade bomb. With it, an anonymous note threatening that “the days of terror have returned” . . . Murder by murder, the promises are being fulfilled. Enlisting the help of FBI Agent Anne Dvorak, Tomczyk is now tracking a series of violent crimes, eerily similar to those that paralyzed the state decades before. With the unlikely assistance of a former pro linebacker and a World War II veteran—each one a surprising conduit between the past and the present—Tomczyk and Dvorak are getting closer to the truth. But who is the ultimate target? And what’s the inconceivable endgame for homegrown extremists determined to hold the city hostage? With time running out, and casualties running high, Tomczyk and Dvorak must risk their own lives for the answers.

Book Against Ambience and Other Essays

Download or read book Against Ambience and Other Essays written by Seth Kim-Cohen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against Ambience diagnoses - in order to cure - the art world's recent turn toward ambience. Over the course of three short months - June to September, 2013 - the four most prestigious museums in New York indulged the ambience of sound and light: James Turrell at the Guggenheim, Soundings at MoMA, Robert Irwin at the Whitney, and Janet Cardiff at the Met. In addition, two notable shows at smaller galleries indicate that this is not simply a major-donor movement. Collectively, these shows constitute a proposal about what we wanted from art in 2013. While we're in the soft embrace of light, the NSA and Facebook are still collecting our data, the money in our bank accounts is still being used to fund who-knows-what without our knowledge or consent, the government we elected is still imprisoning and targeting people with whom we have no beef. We deserve an art that is the equal of our information age. Not one that parrots the age's self-assertions or modes of dissemination, but an art that is hyper-aware, vigilant, active, engaged, and informed. We are now one hundred years clear of Duchamp's first readymades. So why should we find ourselves so thoroughly in thrall to ambience? Against Ambience argues for an art that acknowledges its own methods and intentions; its own position in the structures of cultural power and persuasion. Rather than the warm glow of light or the soothing wash of sound, Against Ambience proposes an art that cracks the surface of our prevailing patterns of encounter, initiating productive disruptions and deconstructions.
