What's more, the mother is giving the boy to Spike to protect and raise. Myka, who'd been raised by an abusive stepfather, is not sure that a wild fighter named Spike is the best man to bring up the cute little jaguar cub. She goes to Shiftertown to check out Spike, and finds that the man behind the name is a lonely Shifter who's lost most of his family and is a fierce caretaker to those he has left. Spike is torn between the cub and his duties as tracker to the Shiftertown leader and asks Myka, the only person who understands, to help him. He starts to like the sassy Myka, a horse trainer who's not afraid of working with animals, even if they're wildcats who turn into humans. When Spike's job puts his cub and Myka in danger, he is forced to choose between those to whom he's pledged his loyalty and his need to protect the woman and cub he's come to love. Her parents want her to go to a free camp for children with disabilities. Beth Anne begs them to let her go to camp with her friends. Finally, her parents admit they dont have enough money to pay the camp fees. With help from some of the seniors, the Handy Helpers are able to raise the money Beth Anne needs. So why has Beth Anne suddenly changed her mind and wants to go to the special camp after all? I would give this book a five-star rating because the children are so kind and humble. I love how Beth Anne is generous and selfless to everyone. I would recommend this book to anyone. I love how each story has a moral to them, and shows you how to be a great friend. - Morgan Damschen I think its so sweet how they all really need each other, but some of them dont see it at first because they are afraid of being hurt. But it all works out in the end. I love all the funny little things that happen to all the kids while reading about their escapades. Once I start reading, I dont want to put the book down. - Sadie Mullins I like Spike because hes a lot like me. I think hes funny, and I like how when he does do something he shouldnt, he gets it and makes it right. - Wylie Mullins Its cool to see the way they help each other and have fun doing it. I also like that this series brings up going to church, and that God plays an important role in their lives. Ive grown up going to church, and I can relate to the Handy Helpers making church a part of their lives. I think Handy Helpers is a great series to read and reread. - Sierra Mullins

Book excerpt: Who is the mysterious Rudy Kazoody, and what, if anything, did he have to do with the events that occurred to a group of teenagers during one fateful summer in New York City’s Bronx neighborhood in the early 1960s? Growing up is difficult enough. But when you’re a recent immigrant arriving in a country that is going through its own coming-of-age process, fueled by rock ‘n’ roll, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, free love, the pill, LSD, and the Cold War, it’s downright confusing, and for some—lethal. With the various upheavals shaking America to its core, Joey, whose family emigrated to the Bronx from Italy’s Apennine Mountains, struggles to retain his innocent, optimistic outlook on life as he and the other young teenagers on Arthur Avenue—virtually all of whom also come from immigrant, working-class families—try to find their place in this new order. From the euphoria of first love to the despair of dashed dreams and betrayal, Joey emerges from the summer sadder but wiser in this romantic, mysterious, and nostalgic tale. Behind it all lurks the mysterious Rudy Kazoody, an enigma that Joey feels he must solve or else remain forever just outside the inner circle of life and love.
