This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tissue equivalent proportional counters (TEPC) are used for medical and space activities whenever a combination of high and low LET (lineal energy transfer) radiations are present. With the frequency and duration of space activities increasing, exposure to fast heavy ions from galactic cosmic radiation and solar events is a major concern. The optimum detector geometry is spherical; to obtain an isotropic response, but simple spherical detectors have the disadvantage of a non-uniform electric field. In order to achieve a uniform electric field along the detector axis, spherical tissue equivalent proportional counters have been designed with different structures to modify the electric field. Some detectors use a cylindrical coil that is coaxial with the anode, but they are not reliable because of their sensitivity to microphonic noise and insufficient mechanical strength. In this work a new spherical TEPC was developed. The approach used was to divide the cathode in several rings with different thicknesses, and adjust the potential difference between each ring and the anode to produce an electric field that is nearly constant along the length of the anode. A-150 tissue equivalent plastic is used for the detector walls, the insulator material between the cathode rings is low density polyethylene, and the gas inside the detector is propane. The detector, along with the charge sensitive preamplifier, is encased in a stainless steel vacuum chamber. The gas gain was found to be 497.5 at 782 volts and the response to neutrons as a function of angle was constant ±7%. This spherical tissue equivalent proportional counter detector system will improve the accuracy of dosimetry in space, and as a result improve radiation safety for astronauts.

Book Design and Construction of a Compact Multi chamber Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter

Download or read book Design and Construction of a Compact Multi chamber Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter written by Temeka Taplin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed to determine the feasibility of constructing a multi-chamber proportional counter. A multi-chamber detector is designed to increase the total surface area which will increase the number of radiation interactions that occur per unit dose. Surface area can be changed without changing the detector volume by subdividing the active volume into several smaller volumes that can then be used as mini detectors whose data can be summed and used to determine the absorbed dose. This will allow the total surface area to remain the same as that of the more common 12.5 cm (5 in.) spherical detector and a decreased total volume resulting in a more compact detector design. However, subdividing those volumes causes problems with electric field fringing at the ends of the mini detectors. In order to correct this, guard ring and field tube designs which operate at a lower voltage than the detector cathode were tested. Results from this study showed that the field tube design provided the best overall resolution but it only outperformed the other designs by a maximum of 5%. However the field tube design doubles the length of the detector which would result in a larger overall detector package. The performance of the single and double ring configurations was suitable for radiation monitoring applications. These findings show that it is feasible to use an arrayof subdivided detector volumes instead of a spherical detector.

Book The Response of a Spherical Tissue equivalent Proportional Counter to 56 Fe Particles from 200 1000 MeV

Download or read book The Response of a Spherical Tissue equivalent Proportional Counter to 56 Fe Particles from 200 1000 MeV written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radiation environment aboard the space shuttle and the International Space Station includes high-Z and high-energy (HZE) particles that are part of the galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) spectrum. Iron-56 is considered to be one of the most biologically important parts of the GCR spectrum. Tissue-equivalent proportional counters (TEPC) are used as active dosimeters on manned space flights. These TEPC's are further used to determine average quality factor for each space mission. A TEPC simulating a 1 micron diameter sphere of tissue was exposed as part of a particle spectrometer to iron-56 at energies from 200-1000 MeV/nucleon. The response of TEPC in terms of frequency-averaged lineal energy, dose-averaged lineal energy, as well as energy deposited at different impact parameters through detector was determined for six different incident energies of iron-56 in this energy range. Calculations determined that charged particle equilibrium was achieved for each of the six experiments. Energy depositions at different impact parameters were calculated using a radial dose distribution model and the results compared to experimental data.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radiation environment aboard the space shuttle and the International Space Station includes high-Z and high-energy (HZE) particles that are part of the galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) spectrum. The 56Fe ion is considered to be one of the most biologically important parts of the GCR spectrum. Tissue-equivalent proportional counters (TEPC) are used as active dosimeters on manned space flights. These TEPC's are further used to determine average quality factor for each space mission. A TEPC simulating a 1-mum diameter sphere of tissue was exposed as part of a particle spectrometer to 56Fe at energies from 200-1000 MeV/nucleon. The response of TEPC in terms of mean lineal energy y¯F, and dose mean lineal energy, y¯ D, as well as energy deposited at different impact parameters through detector was determined for six different incident energies of 56Fe in this energy range. Calculations determined that charged particle equilibrium was achieved for each of the six experiments. Energy depositions at different impact parameters were calculated using the spatially restricted LET model, a radial dose distribution model. Energy deposition at one impact parameter (0-mm) was calculated with a track structure model code called BTC4. Results from these three model calculations were compared to experimental data.

Book excerpt: Radiation Dosimetry, Second Edition, Volume I: Fundamentals describes the significant aspects and fundamentals of radiation dosimetry. This books deals with the concepts and units of dosimetry; special problems of energy deposition in the microscopic domain; interactions of x and y rays, charged particles, and neutrons with matter; mathematical theory of radiation fields; ionization; and cavity-chamber theory. Other topics discussed include the LET distributions, Compton and photoelectric effect, pair production by photons, dosimetry principles, and interactions of neutrons with tissue elements. The calculation of neutron dose in large objects; ionization in gases, liquids, and solids; and cavity dimensions comparable with the electron ranges are also deliberated. This publication likewise covers the measurement of absorbed dose and exposure and application of cavity theory to devices other than the ionization chamber. This volume is a valuable reference for radiation workers, but is also beneficial to students and researchers interested in radiation dosimetry.
