Book Spheres of Perception

Download or read book Spheres of Perception written by Theodore Holtzhausen and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our economic system is over-stimulated by the information age. Interconnection aids and abets companies earning trillions and their swift rise to global dominance. The 24-hour wired world has led to increased volatility; negative information, and even an accidental computer glitch can crash the market and create panic. Health, the environment, the welfare of society are pushed to the far edge of national interests. Instead, GDP and short-term monetary profit is prioritised over long-term impact on society and the environment. The world as we know it is set for collapse. Simultaneously, the science of evolution has itself evolved. In as much as “survival of the fittest” has been used to justify harsh, competition behaviour on the part of individuals and corporations, an updated understanding of evolution now tends to tell us a different story. What if written into the code of our DNA and RNA is a guide for telling us how to evolve morally and as a result improve our world and progress our epistemology? From such an understanding emerge new Spheres of Perception.

Download or read book Galileo s Visions written by Marco Piccolino and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galileo is known as a pioneer of science - especially of mechanics and astronomy - but far less attention has been paid to his work on the senses generally, and more specifically on vision. In this book, two experts on the history of science look at the novel ways in which Galileo looked at the heavens through his telescope, and, in the process, emphasised the importance of contrast phenomena and visual resolution for all observations. He also described the senses and perception in terms that found an echo in doctrines advanced by nineteenth century sensory physiologists. In a fascinating and accessible style, Marco Piccolino and Nick Wade analyse the scientific and philosophical work of Galileo Galilei from the particular viewpoint of his approach to the senses (and especially vision) as a means of acquiring trustworthy knowledge about the constitution of the world. For Galileo evidence from the senses was potentially ambiguous, hence reliable information capable of penetrating the complexity of reality could only be obtained by interpreting the sensory data critically. The philosophical background of Galileo's attitude to the senses was his awareness that nature had not developed a specific language aimed at communicating with senses generally and human senses in particular. Galileo's analysis of the senses corresponded closely to a fundamental tenet of modern sensory physiology and psychophysics - the absence in the world of specific sensory signals like sounds, colours, tastes, and odours. Fully illustrated throughout, this book is an important contribution to psychology and the vision sciences, but more broadly to our knowledge of a pioneering figure in the history of science.

Download or read book The Spheres of Music written by Leonard B. Meyer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard B. Meyer's writings on the theory, history, perception, and aesthetics of music have inspired and provoked generations of readers. The Spheres of Music makes available a selection of his most important essays (originally published between 1974 and 1998). Gathering them together in one volume not only enables the essays to "converse" with and illuminate each other, but also allows Meyer to revise, recant, and comment on the ideas they present. With the same sensitive insight and searching intelligence he has exhibited throughout his career, Meyer transcends the boundaries that so often separate fields of inquiry. The Spheres of Music joins music theory to history, history to culture, culture to aesthetics, aesthetics to psychology, and psychology back to theory. In so doing, the book highlights the complex interrelationships at the heart of the creation, comprehension, and history of music. Diverse and adventurous, The Spheres of Music presents an intriguing and impressive collection of Meyer's work. "Ever since the publication of his Emotion and Meaning in Music . . . I have considered Leonard B. Meyer one of the keenest thinkers about music among us."—Winthrop Sargeant, The New Yorker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Jürgen Weber, brings together the results of various disciplines and his own research and experience as a sculptor and painter and stitches together an exciting new theory of perception of form. In doing so, Weber - who also has a scientific background - explores the fascinating question of what additional information the thing that is seen conveys. How do we tell the difference between a cheerful and a gloomy face? Why do we see that a bud will open shortly? Why do we find some phenomena to be dangerous and others to be desirable? These question have not yet been investigated in a systematic and scientific way, although they are of vital importance to our behaviour. No doubt, this book represents a unique and timely contribution to the many disciplines concerned with the wonders of perception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spheres of Awareness: Wilberian Integral Approaches to Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, and Art moves toward building a new and more comprehensive theory of literature, philosophy, psychology, and art. The extremely popular work of Ken Wilber unites the best of both western and eastern thought and affirms that the stages of consciousness, more refined than that of the reasoning mind, do exist. These stages culminate in awareness of Spirit, or what Buddhism has called Emptiness. Spheres of Awareness shows us how applying Wilber's theoretical templates can broaden and deepen our approaches to literature, philosophy, psychology, and art.

Book Four Spheres of Knowledge Creation

Download or read book Four Spheres of Knowledge Creation written by René Holmbjerg Bøtker and published by Rene Holmbjerg Bøtker. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel and Schopenhauer were to become the last great system-builders in philosophy. The last philosophers who dealt with understanding everything as an entirety. Since then, all we have seen is fragmentation. Sociology, linguistics, psychology, and other aspects of the theory of knowledge. Each individually presented as separate from each other with coherent frameworks that are difficult to identify. As such many of the developments in these fields owe their origins to the theoretical systems of Schopenhauer and Hegel. They have since segregated and grown outside of the scope of what once was. The frameworks and concepts have become re-imagined and rephrased according to internal coherence and lost their position in the grand scheme of things. In this book, the epistemological theories of Schopenhauer and Hegel engages in a dialogue with Leibniz’s ontology to build a coherent causal framework for understanding the taxonomies of knowledge creation. The intent is to open a discussion on how taxonomies of knowledge shapes knowledge creation. To understand how knowledge can be perceived as a being with agency in its own right.

Book Alhacen s Theory of Visual Perception

Download or read book Alhacen s Theory of Visual Perception written by Alhazen and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime between 1028 and 1038, Ibn al-Haytham completed his monumental optical synthesis, Kitab al-Manazir ("Book of Optics"). By no later than 1200, and perhaps somewhat earlier, this treatise appeared in Latin under the title De aspectibus. In that form it was attributed to a certain "Alhacen." These differences in title and authorial designation are indicative of the profound differences between the two versions, Arabic and Latin, of the treatise. In many ways, in fact, they can be regarded not simply as different versions of the same work, but as different works in their own right. Accordingly, the Arab author, Ibn al-Haytham, and his Latin incarnation, Alhacen, represent two distinct, sometimes even conflicting, interpretive voices. And the same holds for their respective texts. To complicate matters, "Alhacen" does not represent a single interpretive voice. There were at least two translators at work on the Latin text, one of them adhering faithfully to the Arabic original, the other content with distilling, even paraphrasing, the Arabic original. Consequently, the Latin text presents not one, but at least two faces to the reader. This two-volume critical edition represents fourteen years of work on Dr. Smith's part. Awarded the 2001 J. F. Lewis Award.
