The philosophical background of Galileo's attitude to the senses was his awareness that nature had not developed a specific language aimed at communicating with senses generally and human senses in particular. Galileo's analysis of the senses corresponded closely to a fundamental tenet of modern sensory physiology and psychophysics - the absence in the world of specific sensory signals like sounds, colours, tastes, and odours. Fully illustrated throughout, this book is an important contribution to psychology and the vision sciences, but more broadly to our knowledge of a pioneering figure in the history of science.

The last philosophers who dealt with understanding everything as an entirety. Since then, all we have seen is fragmentation. Sociology, linguistics, psychology, and other aspects of the theory of knowledge. Each individually presented as separate from each other with coherent frameworks that are difficult to identify. As such many of the developments in these fields owe their origins to the theoretical systems of Schopenhauer and Hegel. They have since segregated and grown outside of the scope of what once was. The frameworks and concepts have become re-imagined and rephrased according to internal coherence and lost their position in the grand scheme of things. In this book, the epistemological theories of Schopenhauer and Hegel engages in a dialogue with Leibniz’s ontology to build a coherent causal framework for understanding the taxonomies of knowledge creation. The intent is to open a discussion on how taxonomies of knowledge shapes knowledge creation. To understand how knowledge can be perceived as a being with agency in its own right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime between 1028 and 1038, Ibn al-Haytham completed his monumental optical synthesis, Kitab al-Manazir ("Book of Optics"). By no later than 1200, and perhaps somewhat earlier, this treatise appeared in Latin under the title De aspectibus. In that form it was attributed to a certain "Alhacen." These differences in title and authorial designation are indicative of the profound differences between the two versions, Arabic and Latin, of the treatise. In many ways, in fact, they can be regarded not simply as different versions of the same work, but as different works in their own right. Accordingly, the Arab author, Ibn al-Haytham, and his Latin incarnation, Alhacen, represent two distinct, sometimes even conflicting, interpretive voices. And the same holds for their respective texts. To complicate matters, "Alhacen" does not represent a single interpretive voice. There were at least two translators at work on the Latin text, one of them adhering faithfully to the Arabic original, the other content with distilling, even paraphrasing, the Arabic original. Consequently, the Latin text presents not one, but at least two faces to the reader. This two-volume critical edition represents fourteen years of work on Dr. Smith's part. Awarded the 2001 J. F. Lewis Award.
