Book excerpt: Did you know that Kellogg's cornflakes were supposed to cure masturbation? Why was the Catholic church so insistent that sex could only be performed in the missionary position? In this book, you will find out why to testify meant to grab someone else's testicles, and why young boys in Papua New Guinea thought they had to drink older men's semen to attain puberty. St. Augustine believed that semen was a fluid that transmits Adam's original sin to every unborn child, Chinese and Indian scholars thought that it gives a person vitality. This book will tell you the ancient secret of achieving multiple male orgasms, and give you the recipe for semen infused French crepes. It covers 5000 years of semen history from an ancient Egyptian god performing auto-fellatio, to today's over one million Americans suddenly discovering that their biological father was an anonymous college student earning $10 a pop at the local sperm bank. Called everything from a magic elixir, the giver of life, to the essence of sin, this is its story

Book XIIIth International Symposium on Spermatology

Download or read book XIIIth International Symposium on Spermatology written by Lars Björndahl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings of the 2018 XIII International Symposium on Spermatology focus on comparative biology, and encourages discussion and the exchange of ideas. The aim of this Symposium was to provide a unique opportunity and bring together scientists from a wide spectrum of research fields – human, domestic animals and other mammals, vertebrates, insects, and plants. The underlying focus is on the function of the spermatozoon – a common feature for sexual reproduction, but extremely varied. By exploring the variability, a better understanding of male reproductive functions can develop. These proceedings address the mechanisms of physiology and pathophysiology, rather than diagnosis and treatment. The symposium featured keynote lectures by invited speakers, followed by presentations on specific aspects of the general topic of the session. Experimental studies are given priority over clinical studies of patient populations. The proceedings comprise both keynote speakers' texts and selected free communications. Posters were considered for publication in the proceedings, and the volume includes exhibited materials on the work of prominent spermatologists, highlighting their important past achievements in the field.

Book Atlas of Human Sperm Ultrastructural Morphology

Download or read book Atlas of Human Sperm Ultrastructural Morphology written by Wei-Jie Zhu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas provides ultrastructural morphological images of human spermatozoa. Sperm morphology plays an essential role in sperm-oocyte interactions and early embryonic development, and human sperm ultrastructural morphology offers a valuable reference tool for assessing certain etiologies of male infertility and reproductive failure. However, the ultrastructural morphology of human sperm has not been systematically evaluated or thoroughly described in the literature. Using 470 original and unpublished images, the book shows various ultrastructural morphological phenotypes; defects of the sperm head, neck, middle piece, principal piece, and terminal piece; as well as artefacts of sperm ultrastructural morphology and phenomena related to inadequate preparation, demonstrating many sperm phenotypes and surface structural appearances for the first time. As such, it helps researchers and practitioners in andrology, reproductive medicine, and reproductive pathology gain a better understanding of human sperm ultrastructural morphology.

Book Spermatogenesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lori Barnard
  • Publisher : Humana Press
  • Release : 2012-09-20
  • ISBN : 9781627030373
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Spermatogenesis written by Lori Barnard and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deficiencies in sperm function are usually the result of spermatogenic defects. Spermatogenesis is a biologically complex and essential process during which spermatogonia undergo meiotic recombination, reduction of the genome to a haploid state, and extensive cellular modifications that result in a motile cell capable of traversing the female reproductive tract, withstanding various potential assaults to viability, and finally successfully fertilizing a mature oocyte to give rise to an embryo. Defects in any step of spermatogenesis or spermatogenesis can lead to male infertility, a disease that affects approximately 5-7% of the population. Spermiogenesis and Spermatogenesis: Methods and Protocols details protocols used in the study of spermatogenesis, clinical analytical protocols, and basic techniques used in clinical andrology laboratories, such as obtaining accurate results for a sperm count, and advanced procedures, such as genome-wide genetic study tools and evaluation of nuclear proteins. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Spermiogenesis and Spermatogenesis: Methods and Protocols is unique in its breadth, and will be a useful reference for clinicians and researchers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spermatozoa, the haploid male gametes, are highly specialized cells capable to fertilize eggs in order to produce diploid zygote. The biogenesis of spermatozoa requires finely modulated occurrence of mitotic, meiotic, and differentiation events. Hence, the production of high-quality spermatozoa impacts fertilization with outcomes on the health of the offspring. This book provides a comprehensive overview on the biogenesis, maturation, functions and activities of spermatozoa in both physiological conditions and infertility. Particular attention has been addressed to the impact of environment on sperm quality and to the appropriate selection of high-quality spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization. Taken together, this book targets a wide audience of basic and clinical scientists, teachers and students, and offers a better understanding of spermatozoa health and disease.
