Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spenser’s ethics offers a novel account of Edmund Spenser as a moral theorist, situating his ethics at the nexus of moral philosophy’s profound transformation in the early modern era, and the English colonisation of Ireland in the turbulent 1580’s and 90’s. It revises a scholarly narrative describing Spenser’s ethical thinking as derivative, nostalgic, or inconsistent with one that contends him to be one of early modern England’s most original and incisive moral theorists, placing The Faerie Queene at the centre of the contested discipline of moral philosophy as it engaged the social, political, and intellectual upheavals driving classical virtue ethics’ unravelling at the threshold of early modernity.

Download or read book Edmund Spenser written by Jennifer Klein Morrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though his writings have long been integral to the canon of early modern English literature, it is only in very recent scholarship that Edmund Spenser has been understood as a preeminent anthropologist whose work develops a complex theory of cultural change. The contributors to this volume approach Spenser’s work from that new perspective, rethinking his contribution as a theorist of culture in light of his poetics. The essays in the collection begin with close readings of Spenser’s writings and end by challenging the ethnographic allegories that shape our knowledge of early modern England. In this book Spenser is proven to be not only a powerful theorist of allegory and poetics but also a profound and subtle ethnographer of England and Ireland. This is an interdisciplinary volume, incorporating studies on history and art history as well as literary criticism. The essays are based on papers presented at The Faerie Queen in the World, 1596-1996: Edmund Spenser among the Disciplines , a conference which took place at the Yale Center for British Art in September 1996.

Book Spenserian Moments

Download or read book Spenserian Moments written by Gordon Teskey and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the distinguished literary scholar Gordon Teskey comes an essay collection that restores Spenser to his rightful prominence in Renaissance studies, opening up the epic of The Faerie Queene as a grand, improvisatory project on human nature, and arguing—controversially—that it is Spenser, not Milton, who is the more important and relevant poet for the modern world. There is more adventure in The Faerie Queene than in any other major English poem. But the epic of Arthurian knights, ladies, and dragons in Faerie Land, beloved by C. S. Lewis, is often regarded as quaint and obscure, and few critics have analyzed the poem as an experiment in open thinking. In this remarkable collection, the renowned literary scholar Gordon Teskey examines the masterwork with care and imagination, explaining the theory of allegory—now and in Edmund Spenser’s Elizabethan age—and illuminating the poem’s improvisatory moments as it embarks upon fairy tale, myth, and enchantment. Milton, often considered the greatest English poet after Shakespeare, called Spenser his “original.” But Teskey argues that while Milton’s rigid ideology in Paradise Lost has failed the test of time, Spenser’s allegory invites engagement on contemporary terms ranging from power, gender, violence, and virtue ethics, to mobility, the posthuman, and the future of the planet. The Faerie Queene was unfinished when Spenser died in his forties. It is the brilliant work of a poet of youthful energy and philosophical vision who opens up new questions instead of answering old ones. The epic’s grand finale, “The Mutabilitie Cantos,” delivers a vision of human life as dizzyingly turbulent and constantly changing, leaving a future open to everything.

It brings new material into play, and offers a sensible, integrated reading of many of the poem’s most important passages, so that it may well prove a pace-setter for this kind of Spenserian study."—Alastair Fowler, Brasenose College, Oxford. Book Spenserian allegory and Elizabethan biblical exegesis

Download or read book Spenserian allegory and Elizabethan biblical exegesis written by Margaret Christian and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser famously conceded to his friend Walter Raleigh that his method in The Faerie Queene 'will seeme displeasaunt' to those who would 'rather have good discipline delivered plainly in way of precepts, or sermoned at large.' Spenser's allegory and Elizabethan biblical exegesis is the first book-length study to clarify Spenser's comparison by introducing readers to the biblical typologies of contemporary sermons and liturgies. The result demonstrates that 'precepts ... sermoned at large' from lecterns and pulpits were themselves often 'clowdily enwrapped in allegoricall devises'. In effect, routine churchgoing prepared Spenser's first readers to enjoy and interpret The Faerie Queene. A wealth of relevant quotations invites readers to adopt an Elizabethan mindset and encounter the poem afresh. The 'chronicle history' cantos, Florimell's adventures, the Souldan episode, Mercilla's judgment on Duessa and even the two stanzas that close the Mutabilitie fragment, all come into sharper focus when juxtaposed with contemporary religious rhetoric.

Download or read book Spenser s Allegory written by Isabel Gamble MacCaffrey and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabel MacCaffrey contends that, in allegory, the mind makes a model of itself, and she shows that The Faerie Queene, mirroring as it does the mind's structure, is both a treatise on and an example of the central role that imagination plays in human life. Viewing the poem as a model of Spenser's universe, the author investigates the poet's theory of knowledge and the role of imagination in the construction of cosmic models. She begins with a survey of theories of the imagination and the creation of fictions, establishing a context in which allegorical images may be understood throughout the European allegorical tradition to which The Faerie Queene belongs. Isabel MacCaffrey's new readings show that insofar as Spenser's poem concerns modes of knowledge, it offers the reader an anatomy of its own composition, an analysis of imagination in its varied relations to the world. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using as a primary focus the manner in which Protestant and Catholic paradigms of the Word affect the understanding of how meaning manifests itself in material language, this book develops a history of literacy between the middle of the sixteenth century and the middle of the seventeenth century. The author emphasizes how literacy is defined according to changing concepts of philological manifestation and embodiment, and how various social and political factors influence these concepts. The study looks at literary texts such as The Fairie Queene, early Shakespearean comedies, sermons and poems by John Donne, Latin textbooks and religious primers, and educational and religious treatises which illustrate how language could be used to perform spiritual functions. The cross section of texts serves to illustrate the pervasive applicability of the author's theories to early modern literature and culture, and their relationship to literature. the study of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature: Protestant reading and exegetical strategies in contrast with Catholic strategies, and secular versus spiritual literacies.

Book The Allegory of Reason in Spenser s the Faerie Queene

Download or read book The Allegory of Reason in Spenser s the Faerie Queene written by Christopher. A. Heppner and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis is an attempt to map out some of the battlefields in The Faerie Queene on which are fought the wars between reason on the one hand and the passions and senses on the other. This war seems to be the core or backbone of the moral allegory of the poem, despite the fact that the relationship to Aristotle has received rather more critical attention. In accordance with this belief, I shall be treating the figures of the poem as if they were intended to be more or less realistic representations of human beings, not abstract figures whom we are supposed to identity completely with the nominal virtue tor which they stand and fight." --
