Moyer tells the story of Wilkinson and her remarkable church, the Society of Universal Friends.Wilkinson's message was a simple one: humankind stood on the brink of the Apocalypse, but salvation was available to all who accepted God's grace and the authority of his prophet: the Public Universal Friend. Wilkinson preached widely in southern New England and Pennsylvania, attracted hundreds of devoted followers, formed them into a religious sect, and, by the late 1780s, had led her converts to the backcountry of the newly formed United States, where they established a religious community near present-day Penn Yan, New York. Even this remote spot did not provide a safe haven for Wilkinson and her followers as they awaited the Millennium. Disputes from within and without dogged the sect, and many disciples drifted away or turned against the Friend. After Wilkinson’s "second" and final death in 1819, the Society rapidly fell into decline and, by the mid-nineteenth century, ceased to exist. The prophet’s ministry spanned the American Revolution and shaped the nation’s religious landscape during the unquiet interlude between the first and second Great Awakenings.The life of the Public Universal Friend and the Friend’s church offer important insights about changes to religious life, gender, and society during this formative period. Looking beyond the poetry she published during the Harlem Renaissance, Noelle Morrissette provides a new critical lens for interpreting Spencer’s expansive life and imagination through her archives, giving particular focus to her manuscripts authored from 1940 to 1975. Through its attentiveness to Spencer’s published and unpublished work, her work as a librarian and an activist, and the political dimensions of her writing, Anne Spencer between Worlds transforms our understanding of Spencer. It offers a sustained examination of poetry and ecology, and the relationships among race, gender, and archives, through its analysis of the manuscripts that Spencer produced and revised throughout her life. Morrissette argues that the expansiveness, depth, and range of Spencer’s writing has not been appreciated because she did not publish this incomplete, ongoing work. She also demonstrates that careful reading of the manuscripts challenges many of the assumptions that have governed Spencer’s reception. There is abundant research on the effects of nature and nurture and their repercussions on personality development. It is well documented that our genes dictate our traits and that our exposure to experiences in the world mould our attitudes, principles and morals which, in turn, enable the intellect to forge and govern our attitudes and behaviour. Our identities, the perceptions others have of them, and the perception we have of the perception others have of them, carry a huge burden. The weak often struggle with the paranoia of self-identity; the strong appear to glide through life unaffected but often paddle furiously in deep running waters. My thesis embraces a belief in universal self-doubt and the tenuous grasp we have on the nature and structure of our existence and on how we define ourselves, within this context. It explores, by means of control experiment, (transmutation), the reference points of our existence, both the unwarranted pride and abhorrence we recognise in ourselves and, above all, the enigma that is our identity.
