Book excerpt: Magic always comes with a cost. For Lena, a mage in Rivaini's College, that cost has always been great. Almost too much. It's why she refuses to cast spells when she can. But fate and destiny won't wait for her. It will come whether she's ready or not. And she won't be ready, because when she gets involved in magic, bad things tend to happen. Death, an uncontrollable fire...oh, and black magic. Forbidden magic that was outlawed in Rivaini centuries ago. If the King or the High Enchanter catches wind of what she's capable of, her execution will be swift. She knows that.Still, somehow Lena happens to stumble across an ancient tomb of heroes. Even worse, she accidentally raises the entire crypt in a fit of uncontrollable magic. Most end up being nothing more than skeletons, but two are more. As in, handsome and practically naked more. Tamlen and Valerius. Enemies from a time long past, but together they make her feel things she never thought she'd feel. Normal, loved, desired. Having thralls, being a necromancer--not something Lena wants. Tamlen and Valerius? They're a different story. She hungers for them, and she'll have them. Both of them.Maybe together they can stop the ancient being whose eyes are set on Lena, the old god who will bring nothing but death and destruction in its wake. Spells and Necromancy is the first in a trilogy of Unfortunate Magic. It is a fast-burn Reverse Harem romance and contains explicit sexual scenes, along with some M/M elements. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age.

Book Forbidden Rites

Download or read book Forbidden Rites written by Richard Kieckhefer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1998-02-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich is a manuscript that few scholars have noticed and that no one in modern times has treated with the seriousness it deserves. Forbidden Rites consists of an edition of this medieval Latin text with a full commentary, including detailed analysis of the text and its contents, discussion of the historical context, translation of representative sections of the text, and comparison with other necromantic texts of the late Middle Ages. The result is the most vivid and readable introduction to medieval magic now available. Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents—prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials. With more detail on particular experiments than the famous thirteenth-century Picatrix and more variety than the Thesaurus Necromantiae ascribed to Roger Bacon, the manual is one of the most interesting and important manuscripts of medieval magic that has yet come to light.

Book Greek and Roman Necromancy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Ogden
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-31
  • ISBN : 0691207062
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Greek and Roman Necromancy written by Daniel Ogden and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In classical antiquity, there was much interest in necromancy--the consultation of the dead for divination. People could seek knowledge from the dead by sleeping on tombs, visiting oracles, and attempting to reanimate corpses and skulls. Ranging over many of the lands in which Greek and Roman civilizations flourished, including Egypt, from the Greek archaic period through the late Roman empire, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the subject ever published in any language. Daniel Ogden surveys the places, performers, and techniques of necromancy as well as the reasons for turning to it. He investigates the cave-based sites of oracles of the dead at Heracleia Pontica and Tainaron, as well as the oracles at the Acheron and Avernus, which probably consisted of lakeside precincts. He argues that the Acheron oracle has been long misidentified, and considers in detail the traditions attached to each site. Readers meet the personnel--real or imagined--of ancient necromancy: ghosts, zombies, the earliest vampires, evocators, sorcerers, shamans, Persian magi, Chaldaeans, Egyptians, Roman emperors, and witches from Circe to Medea. Ogden explains the technologies used to evocate or reanimate the dead and to compel them to disgorge their secrets. He concludes by examining ancient beliefs about ghosts and their wisdom--beliefs that underpinned and justified the practice of necromancy. The first of its kind and filled with information, this volume will be of central importance to those interested in the rapidly expanding, inherently fascinating, and intellectually exciting subjects of ghosts and magic in antiquity.

Book The Cambridge Book of Magic

Download or read book The Cambridge Book of Magic written by Paul Foreman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Book of Magic is an edition of a hitherto unpublished sixteenth-century manuscript of necromancy (ritual magic), now in Cambridge University Library. Written in England between 1532 and 1558, the manuscript consists of 91 'experiments', most of them involving the conjuration of angels and demons, for purposes as diverse as knowing the future, inflicting bodily harm, and recovering stolen property. However, the author's interests went beyond spirit conjuration to include a variety of forms of natural magic. The treatise drew on astrological image magic and magico-medical texts, and the author had a particular fascination with the properties of plants and herbs. The Cambridge Book of Magic gives an insight into the practice and thought of one sixteenth-century magician, who may have been acting on behalf of clients as well as working for his own benefit.

Book The Magic of Rogues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Klaassen
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2021-02-19
  • ISBN : 0271089547
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book The Magic of Rogues written by Frank Klaassen and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1510, nine men were tried in the Archbishop’s Court in York for attempting to find and extract a treasure on the moor near Mixindale through necromantic magic. Two decades later, William Neville and his magician were arrested by Thomas Cromwell for having engaged in a treasonous combination of magic practices and prophecy surrounding the death of William’s older brother, Lord Latimer, and the king. In The Magic of Rogues, Frank Klaassen and Sharon Hubbs Wright present the legal documents about and open a window onto these fascinating investigations of magic practitioners in early Tudor England. Set side by side with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century texts that describe the sorts of magic those practitioners performed, these documents are translated, contextualized, and presented in language accessible to nonspecialist readers. Their analysis reveals how magicians and cunning folk operated in extended networks in which they exchanged knowledge, manuscripts, equipment, and even clients; foregrounds magicians’ encounters with authority in ways that separate them from traditional narratives about witchcraft and witch trials; and suggests that the regulation and punishment of magic in the Tudor period were comparatively and perhaps surprisingly gentle. Incorporating the study of both intellectual and legal sources, The Magic of Rogues presents a well-rounded picture of illicit learned magic in early Tudor England. Engaging and accessible, this book will appeal to anyone seeking to understand the intersection of medieval legal history, religion, magic, esotericism, and Tudor history.

Book Lives Of The Necromancers

Download or read book Lives Of The Necromancers written by William Godwin and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the most eminent persons in successive ages, who have claimed for themselves, or to whom has been imputed by others, the exercise of magical power. Necromancy is the art of revealing future events by a pretended communication with the dead. There is a theory that this impious superstition and imposture had its origin at a very early period in the land of Egypt, and had been thence propagated like many other arts in every nation which ancient history has made us acquainted with. Of its early existence we have complete evidence from the writings of Moses, where it is severely condemned as an abomination to the Lord. It appears to be one of the whoredoms to which Ezekiel represents his countrymen as having brought with them from Egypt, and continued to practise till they were carried captives into Babylon.
