Book excerpt: Space Platform tells of man's first step into outer space ... of the difficulties and dangers of reaching for the stars. It is also an exciting adventure. When young Joe Kenmore came to Bootstrap to install pilot gyros in the Platform he hadn't bargained for sabotage or murder or love. But Joe learned that ruthless agents were determined to wreck the project. He found that the beautiful girl he loved, and men like The Chief, a rugged Indian steelworker, and Mike, a midget who made up for his size by brains, would have to fight with their bare hands to make man's age old dream of space travel come true! Murray Leinster (June 16, 1896 - June 8, 1975) was the nom de plume of William Fitzgerald Jenkins, an American science fiction and alternate history writer. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia. During World War I, he served with the Committee of Public Information and the United States Army (1917-1918). Following the war, Leinster became a free-lance writer. In 1921, he married Mary Mandola. They had four daughters. During World War II, he served in the Office of War Information. He won the Liberty Award in 1937 for "A Very Nice Family," the 1956 Hugo Award for Best Novelette for "Exploration Team," a retro-Hugo in 1996 for Best Novelette for "First Contact." Leinster was the Guest of Honor at the 21st Worldcon in 1963. In 1995, the Sidewise Award for Alternate History was established, named after Leinster's story "Sidewise in Time." Leinster wrote and published over 1,500 short stories and articles over the course of his career. He wrote 14 movie and hundreds of radio scripts and television plays, inspiring several series including "Land of the Giants" and "The Time Tunnel."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Hurricane Katrina vividly revealed, disaster policy in the United States is broken and needs reform. What can we learn from past disastersÑstorms, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and wildfiresÑabout preparing for and responding to future catastrophes? How can these lessons be applied in a future threatened by climate change? In this bold contribution to environmental law, Robert Verchick argues for a new perspective on disaster law that is based on the principles of environmental protection. His prescription boils down to three simple commands: Go Green, Be Fair, and Keep Safe. ÒGoing greenÓ means minimizing exposure to hazards by preserving natural buffers and integrating those buffers into artificial systems like levees or seawalls. ÒBeing fairÓ means looking after public health, safety, and the environment without increasing personal and social vulnerabilities. ÒKeeping safeÓ means a more cautionary approach when confronting disaster risks. Verchick argues that government must assume a stronger regulatory role in managing natural infrastructure, distributional fairness, and public risk. He proposes changes to the federal statutes governing environmental impact assessments, wetlands development, air emissions, and flood control, among others. Making a strong case for more transparent governmental decision-making, Verchick offers a new vision of disaster law for the next generation.

Book excerpt: This book propagates a new way of thinking about managing our resources by integrating the perspectives of complex systems theory and social psychology. By resources, the authors mean objects, such as cell phones and cars, and human resources, such as family members, friends, and the small and large communities they belong to. As we all face the "replace or repair" dichotomy, readers will understand how to repair themselves, their relationships, and communities, accept the "new normal," and contribute to repairing the world. The book is offered to Zoomers, growing up in a world where it seems everything is falling apart; people in their 30s and 40s, who are thinking about how to live a fulfilling life; people from the Boomers generation, who are thinking back on life and how to repair relationships. The Reader will enjoy the intellectual adventure of connecting the natural and social worlds and understanding the transition's pathways from a "throwaway society" to a "repair society.

Book Psychological Evaluation in Psychotherapy

Download or read book Psychological Evaluation in Psychotherapy written by Leonard Blank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a scholar who is a therapist and a psychodiagnostician, this book documents the direct relationship between patient response patterns to a battery of psychological tests, and their subsequent behavior in psychotherapy. Unlike other books in the field, which concentrate on psychodiagnostics or psychological report writing, Blank takes the reader, session-by-session, through the therapeutic notes of ten patients who were in therapy. At each step of the way, patient behavior in therapy is shown alongside test response patterns. This book, first published in 1965, continues to provide a major contribution, both as a practical manual and as a reference book for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, trainees and students. Anyone who is interested in using psychological evaluations to better understand the intricacies of the therapeutic process will fi nd the book an invaluable aid. So also will those who want to sharpen their diagnostic skills as part of theory construction. The author also provides a description and rationale of commonly employed psycho-diagnostic techniques, diagnostic overviews for each of the ten patients emphasizing the dynamics of differing diagnostic patterns and their prognostic implications, complete test data and process therapy notes for each of the ten patients, and an analysis of the complex interplay of personality resources of the patient, the personality of the therapist and the fortuitous circumstances that enter into every therapeutic situation.

Book excerpt: "Avital Ronell's work studies the fading empire of cognition, modulating stupidity into idiocy, puerility, and the figure of the ridiculous philosopher instituted by Kant. Investigating ignorance, dumbfoundedness, and the limits of reason, Stupidity probes the pervasive practice of theory-bashing and related forms of paranoid aggression. A section on prolonged and debilitating illness pushes the text to an edge of a corporeal hermeneutics, "at the limits of what the body knows and tells.""--BOOK JACKET.

Book China and the West

Download or read book China and the West written by Fokke Obbema and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China sees its relations with the West as absolutely crucial to its future. This wider relationship, between the new world and the old, is changing the global political and economic landscape. But can Europe and China overcome their cultural and political differences to develop a relationship of trust? Here, experienced journalist Fokke Obbema travels through Europe and China and speaks with dozens of entrepreneurs, students, experts and politicians. He shows how mutual relations are affected by a feeling of superiority on both sides, and sheds light on the thousands of interactions between people in finance, politics, economics and education. Above all he shows how a fear of China has permeated the discourse, and that we should instead take a balanced view of the future of China relations, even be excited by the change which is coming. Apart from anything else, the west could be on the brink of another financial disaster - What if the Chinese Don't Come?
