Book Triple Double Speed Reading

Download or read book Triple Double Speed Reading written by Dennis Brooks and published by Speedy Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of reading is a complex mental process characterized by rapid forward and backward eye movements. Research has shown that the eyes do not follow a line of text continuously, but move in short stops and rapid movements. The movements can provide a visual record of the person's reading pattern and show how the information is being received and processed. Fast readers move and fix their eyes on a different spot about four times a second. During the time when their eyes are fixed, new information is brought in and processed. The fixed time periods are measured in thousandths of a second or milliseconds (ms). The duration of the average fixation is 225 ms. A movement lasts about 30 ms; during this time, reception of new visual information is suppressed. This gives the brain time to process the information it has already received and ensures that this older information is understood before new information comes into play. Scan and fixation times can also be measured by individual words. Long and unfamiliar words will have a longer fixation time. Short and familiar words will have a shorter fixation time. The scan time for short one-syllable words can be so brief that it is hardly measurable. Longer one-syllable-words need only one scan and one brief fixation or pause. Multi-syllable words need one complete scan from beginning to end that normally includes a brief pause for each syllable. However, speed readers can scan and read longer words in one movement. By conducting reading research and studying reading habits, scientists have found that the average eye movement distance is about eight characters and the average size word is five characters. This gives fast readers an overlap of three characters. Speed readers have learned to use this overlap along with fewer eye movements to increase their reading speeds.

Book The Sounds of Language

Download or read book The Sounds of Language written by Henry Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonetics is the scientific study of sounds used in language- how the sounds are produced, how they are transferred from the speaker to the hearer and how they are heard and perceived. The Sounds of Language provides an accessible, general introduction to phonetics with a special emphasis on English. Focusing on the phonetics of English, the first section allows students to get an overall view of the subject. Two standard accents of English are presented- RP (Received Pronunciation), the standard accent of England, and GA (General American), the standard accent throughout much of North America. The discussion is arranged so that students can read only the RP or GA portions, if desired. Sixteen additional accents of English spoken around the world are also covered to provide students with wider international coverage. The author then moves on to introduce acoustics phonetics in an accessible manner for those without a science background. The last section of the book provides a detailed discussion of all aspects of speech with extensive examples from languages around the world. Containing student-friendly features such as extensive exercises for practising the sounds covered in each chapter; a glossary of technical terms; instructions on how to write phonetic symbols; the latest International Phonetic Alphabet chart and a detailed list of English consonantal variants, The Sounds of Language provides an excellent introduction to phonetics to students of linguistics and speech pathology and students of English as a second language.

This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exotic Territory: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Poetry seeks to address a dearth of information in the English-speaking world about Paraguayan poetry of the past forty years. The twelve outstanding poets included hereJos Luis Appleyard, Moncho Azuaga, Gladys Carmagnola, Susy Delgado, Oscar Ferreiro, Rene Ferrer, Joaqun Morales, Amanda Pedrozo, Jacobo Rauskin, Elvio Romero, Ricardo de La Vega, Carlos Villagra Marsalrepresent a wide diversity of themes, styles, and perspectives in this little-known nation. Most of them have published extensively, have been recognized through literary awards and inclusion in national and international anthologies, and continue writing today. To contextualize the poets and their poetry for readers unfamiliar with Paraguay, the Introduction provides a brief background of its geography, history, government, economy, society, and artistic milieu. Following that is a wide selection of representative poems published previously in Spanish, with translations in English on facing pages. The book concludes with a brief biographical sketch of each poet, followed by an unprecedented and extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources intended to encourage those readers who might want to pursue further reading or research on any poet of interest.

Book Language and Rhythm in Plautus

Download or read book Language and Rhythm in Plautus written by Benjamin Fortson and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plays of Plautus have long been recognized as a unique mine of information about the spoken Latin of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. But detailed and up-to-date linguistic treatments of the Plautine meters and other phenomena in his plays have hitherto been lacking. This book seeks to remedy that gap by presenting a series of case-studies to glean information about the synchronic grammar of Plautine Latin, in particular the rhythmic organization of Latin speech and the effects of syntactic processes on Latin prosodic phonology. Some of the topics, such as enjambement and the aphaeresis of “est”, have never before received such treatment, while others, such as Meyer’s and Luchs’s laws, split resolutions, and iambic shortening, are provided a firmer linguistic footing, and fuller discussion of allied issues, than hitherto. Topics in Italic syntax (such as the syntactic structure of adpositional phrases and their history) and in Indo-European morphophonology (such as the prosodic status of finite verbs) are dealt with as well, as is an investigation into the effects of pragmatics on the rhythmic organization of phrases. The book will be of interest to classicists, comparative philologists, and general linguists.

Book Approaches to Slavic Interaction

Download or read book Approaches to Slavic Interaction written by Nadine Thielemann and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of current research priorities in the analysis of face-to-face-interaction in Slavic speaking language communities. The core of this volume ranges from discourse analysis in the tradition of interactional linguistics and conversation analysis to newer methods of politeness research. A further field includes empirical and interpretive methods of modern sociolinguistics and statistical analysis of spoken language in casual and institutional talks. Several papers focus on a semantic or syntactic analysis of talk-in-interaction by trying to show how interlocutors use certain lexical, grammatical, syntactic and multimodal or prosodic means for the management of interaction in performing specific actions, genres and displaying negotiations of epistemic, evidential or evaluative stances. The volume is rounded out by contributions to the theory of politeness where strategies of face-work in casual as well as institutional discourse are analyzed, or in which social tasks entertained by code-switching and language alternation within the interaction of bilinguals are discussed.
