Book Assassinations and Socialism

Download or read book Assassinations and Socialism written by August Bebel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Assassinations and Socialism: From a Speech by August Bebel, Delivered at Berlin, November 2, 1898 A large portion of the German capitalist class has not yet forgotten the anti-socialist law. They grieved greatly when the law was revoked, and they are still fishing desperately for an opportunity to replace it by a new exceptional law, or to render the Common Law more rigorous. Their main sup. Port in this endeavor was Prince Bismarck. Differences of opinion as to the manner in which the Social Democracy should be treated led to his resignation. As he never forgot that fact, he faithfully preserved, to the end of his life, his old hatred for the Social Democracy. Bismarck caused it repeatedly to be stated in his personal organ, the Hamburger Nachrichten, that there is nothing left to be done but to provoke the Social Democrats to com mit acts 'of despair, to draw them out into the open street, and there to shoot them down. Book August Bebel

Download or read book August Bebel written by Jürgen Schmidt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August Bebel (1840-1913) was one of the towering figures of late nineteenth century European socialism and the leading figure of the German labour movement from the 1860s until his death in 1913. Born into a modest family, and a half-orphan from the age of four, his advancement to a pivotal role in the politics of Imperial Germany mirrored the success of German social democracy in this period. Bebel was not only the founder and first leader of the Social Democratic Workers Party of Germany (SDAP), a political movement that became the largest socialist party in nineteenth-century Europe, but he was also a powerful orator and leading member of the German parliament. He was described by contemporaries as the 'king of the German workers' and the 'shadow emperor' of Germany. In this biography, Jürgen Schmidt situates Bebel's life and career in the political, social and cultural history of modern Europe. He also provides an overview of the growth of the labour movement and working class political activism in late-nineteenth century Germany. This is an essential biography of one of Germany's most influential and unique politicians, living at a time of great political, social and industrial change in Europe.

Book The Powers of Speech

Download or read book The Powers of Speech written by David Bathrick and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this definitive study, David Bathrick examines East German culture both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. Bathrick argues that dissident East German writers were unique among East European literary intellectuals in that they attempted “to open up alternative spaces for public speech from within [the] framework” of Marxism and state socialism. According to Bathrick, “the fact that some of them had been censored, hunted, questioned, and ridiculed does not belie the fact that they were also—and sometimes even simultaneously—privileged, nurtured, courted, and coddled. . . . It was precisely their function on ‘both sides’ of the power divide, as official and nonofficial voices within the whole, which defined a particular kind of intellectual in the GDR.” Bathrick applies his insights into this “particular kind of intellectual” to a wide range of topics. He compares oppositional culture in East Germany to radical cultures elsewhere, examines the complex political and cultural relations of East and West Germany, traces the anguished history of the East German avant-garde, and describes the troubled effort to develop a revolutionary theatrical tradition in East Germany. The book also includes nuanced insights into the collapse of the East German political order in the late 1980s and more recent revelations about the collaboration of allegedly oppositional writers with the Stasi (state police). In his treatment of these and other issues, Bathrick enters hotly contested territory. Yet he brings clarity and scrupulous fairness to these issues that are still very much alive in Germany—and elsewhere—today.
