Book excerpt: Ever since there have been factories women and children have, more often than not, worked in those factories. What is perhaps less well known is that women also worked underground in coal mines and overground scaling the inside of chimneys. Young children were also put to work in factories and coalmines; they were deployed inside chimneys, often half-starved so that they could shin up ever narrower flues. This book charts the unhappy but aspirational story of women and children at work through the Industrial Revolution to the beginning of the 20th century. Without women there would have been no pre-industrial cottage industries, without women the Industrial Revolution would not have been nearly as industrial and nowhere near as revolutionary. Many women, and children, were obliged to take up work in the mills and factories – long hours, dangerous, often toxic conditions, monotony, bullying, abuse and miserly pay were the usual hallmarks of a day’s work - before they headed homeward to their other job: keeping home and family together. This long overdue and much needed book also covers the social reformers, the role of feminism and activism and the various Factory Acts and trade unionism. We examine how women and children suffered chronic occupational diseases and disabling industrial injuries - life changing and life shortening – and often a one way ticket to the workhouse. The book concludes with a survey of the art, literature and the music which formed the soundtrack for the factory girl and the climbing boys.

Book Origin of Kibosh

Download or read book Origin of Kibosh written by Gerald Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an etymological study of the origins of the word kibosh, which has long been one of the great mysteries of the English language. Unconvincing derivations have been suggested from Yiddish to Gaelic and Italian, and thus far consensus among lexicographers has leaned toward referencing the word as ‘origin unknown’. In this study, the authors present convincing and important new evidence in favour of the derivation of kibosh from the word for a fearsome Middle Eastern whip, known as the kurbash. This monograph is one of the most significant etymological works directed at a single phrase. It is the gold standard on deep-drill, focused and exhaustive single-word lexicography and will be of interest to lexicographers and linguists in the relevant fields.

This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Speech of Michael Thomas Sadler, Esq., M. P., In the House of Commons: On the Second Reading of the Roman Catholic Relief Bill, March 17, 1829 I use to address this Housenlabouring under feelings which would on any occasion be most embarrassing, but which are now painfully heightened by a sense of the unequalled import ance of the subject now under discussion, as well as by the extraor dinary circumstances with which it is connected. A consideration of these, togetherwith others peculiar to myself, may, I apprehend, in capacitate me from addressing you at all. I must, however, attempt it. The cause which demands, and at this moment, all the efl'orts of the true friends of the existing Constitution, shall have mine, however humble, and at whatever sacrifice: I am willing, therefore, to expose myself 1n its service, though feelings for which the House will give me credit in first venturing to addressit - feel ings of proper diflidence, as well as pride, equally prompt me to be silent. I add my humble vote to that faithful band who have resigned the countenance of those whom they have hitherto respected so deeply, and to whom they have adhered so faithfully; who have surrendered, in the language of many, all pretensions to a share 0: common sense or of general informat1on; who submit to be branden as a lessening class of intolerants and bigots, from which the Mi nisters themselves have just happily escaped and, what is still more painful to generous minds, who are ranked amongst those that are as devoid of true liberality and benevolence, as they are of reason and intelligence. (hear, hear.) Short as has been the time in which I have had the honour of a seat in this House, I have been here long enough to perceive the spirit by which a part of it, and, unhappily, too large a one, is actuated. The spirit of Popery, when dominant, (i beg pardon for any thing so obsolete and illiberal as an allusion to history, ) dragged the Objects of1ts resentment to the stake; - that spirit still survives - its advocates at this moment would wil lingly inflict on its conscientious Opponents a martyrdom still more grievous to generous minds, 1n aiming at the moral and intellectual character and attainments of those whom they mark out as their. Victims. All these things, however, move us not. In acause like that of the Protestant Constitution of England, now placed, for the first timesince its existence, in a situation of imminent peril, an humble part in its triumph would indeed give me a share of that immeasurable joy Which its rescue would diffuse through out the nation; but to be numbered as one of those who, faithful to the end, made a last, though ineffectual, struggle in its defence. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Speech of Michael Thomas Sadler, Esq., M. P. In the House of Commons, on the Third Reading of the Roman Catholic Relief Bill, March 30, 1829 It was my intention, on this occasion, to have fortified the view I previously took of the real principle of the British Constitution as demanding, and for the most important of all possible reasons, a moral qualification from those who have to make or administer our laws, by appeals to the highest authorities that have ever adorned this country. To present these to the House would, however, con sume too much of its time; and it is, moreover, rendered, I think, unnecessary by the feebleness with which that principle of our Con stitution has been attacked. I mean not the Constitution as altered in 1828, nor yet as it is about to be further revolu tionized in 1829, but the Constitution of the lst of William the Third, preserved entire, at least as it regards England, till the last of George III. What emotions does that venerated name kindle in our hearts, and especially on this important occa sion! Some of these authorities, Sir, I have selected, and hold in my hand, but I will not now fatigue younattention by reading them, especially at so protracted a period of the discussion, how ever n1uch my argum'ent may suffer by the omission. I had meant also to have instituted a short contrast between the doctrines of Protestantism and Catholicism, as to their necessary effects on public morals, liberty, and happiness; subjects inseparably con useted with a due consideration of the question before us. I will, however, only remark as to Popery, that the peculiar na ture'of its tenets is such as naturally to produce those melan choly effects, which have invariably accompanied it whenever dominant. Its exclusive and intolerant character, which dictated such atrocious cruelties when in the plenitude of its power, still remains; and however much repressed at present, or however interpreted, is still highly prejudicial to the best feelings and truest interests of society, by disrupting that bond of charity which ought to unite in mutual affection the whole Christian community. Lts ridiculous miracles, including that standing one, transnhstantiation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
