Book excerpt: Rep. Thomas Nelson advocates that the agitation over slavery cease. He argues that politically and geographically the question of slavery has already been answered, and calls "disunionists" within the House to join across political and geographic boundaries. He supports that resolution which says no member of the House of Representatives may be elected Speaker unless he supports the Missouri Compromise.

This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Hon. John L. Thomas, Jr., Of Maryland, on Reconstruction: Delivered in the House of Representatives, April 21, 1866 While I am as desirous as any man that the States unrepresented should have their dele gates participate with us in our deliberations, I am at the same time sensible Of a duty that I owe to my country and to such Of the loyal masses of the South as Stood true to the Union in its hour Of peril, that is paramount to any courtesy that I might be willing to extend to them. Sir, the smoke of the great revolution through which we have just emerged has not yet sufficiently passed away to allow us to dis cern clearly the prospects or hopes of the future. For myself, as I never entertained a doubt during the long and dreary night that for nearly five years hung like a death-pall over Our country, that the rebellion would be finally crushed out, and traitors made to feel the enormity of their guilt, SO tel-day, if I feel a sad disappointment that they have not met that doom that their treason entitled them to receive, I have an abiding confidence in the devotion and patriotism of the loyal masses of the people that they will never allow these rebels, who have forfeited everything by their rebellion, to dictate the terms upon which they shall resume their relationship to the Govern ment. They are either to be consulted as to what conditions will best please them, Or we are to make known to them upon what terms we please to receive them.. We are either to consent that such men as they select shall be our peers in this House, Or we are to tell them what character of peers they shall send here. We are either to exact no guarantees for future security, or we are to impose such guarantees as Congress in its wisdom may deem best for the public good. Henry, of Tennessee: In the Senate of the Confederate States, November 29, 1864 On these principles our fathers, more than eighty years ago, though comparatively few in numbers, grappled with the power of Great Britain, and, after seven years of war, in which their country was desolated, and their cities occupied, possessed and sacked by the en emy, finally triumphed. On these same principles we have staked our all, in the war in which we are engaged with the United States; and though our country may be despoiled and ravaged, our cities given to the flames, and nothing he left but the blackness of ashes to mark where they stood, we, too, will finally triumph and achieve our independence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of John Bell, of Tennessee, on Slavery in the United States, and the Causes of the Present Dissensions Between the North and the South: Delivered in the Senate of the United States on the 5th and 6th of July, 1850 I think, Mr. President although some have said that there is no danger to be apprehended from the present condition of the country, and others have endeavored to create a panic, that there is danger, which ought not to be unheeded. I believe that the destiny of the Republic, for good or for evil, does depend, and in no slight degree, not only upon what we may now do but also upon what we may fail to do. Download or read book Speech Delivered by Hon Thomas Hart Benton written by Thomas Hart Benton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech Delivered by Hon. Thomas Hart Benton: At Jefferson, the Capitol of Missouri on the 26th May, 1849 In reading this Speech, however, we have been tempted to regret that Mr. Benton has not gone yet further, so far at least as to admit the expediency of prohibiting slavery in the territories. He holds that Congress has a right to enforce such a prohibition; he is against slavery, he tells us; he would resist its introduction into California and New Mexico; the ordinance of 1787 was a noble and a wise ordinance in his view, and the same policy which we then adopted in regard to the Northwestern Territory ought, he thinks, to be pursued in the government of the country acquired from Mexico. He believes, how ever, the express prohibition of slavery in these provinces to be necessary an since slavery does not now exist there, and cannot be introduced but by act of Congress, and he would not vote for a regulation which he thought to be simply superfluous.
