This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech of Hon. James W. Wall, of N. J., On the Missouri Emancipation Bill: Delivered in the United States Senate, February 7th, 1863 The bill not only provides for the emancipation of the slaves of Missouri, but proposes to put the people of the other States under the grinding barrow of taxation in order to pay for the slaves, a proposition so monstrous and abuor mal that I wonder it does not strike Senators on the other side of the Chamber with alarm at the consequences to flow from such an act. But their sensibilities seem blunted, their minds darkened, and their judgments clouded, whenever a question arises involving the interests of the black race. Are you anxious, Senators, that the epitaph should be writ ten over the tomb of the Republic: Here lies a White na tion, which lost its liberties and its name in endeavoring to give freedom to the black and inferior race? If you are not, your conduct, day after day, is in strong correspondency with a policy that must inevitably bring this Republic to its grave, and write upon its tomb this horrid epitaph. Book excerpt: In the blistering summer of 1861, President Lincoln began pressuring and ordering the physical shutdown of any Northern newspaper that voiced opposition to the war. These attacks were sometimes carried out by soldiers, sometimes by angry mobs under cover of darkness. Either way, the effect was a complete dismantling of the free press. In the midst stood publisher John Hodgson, an angry bigot so hated that a local newspaper gleefully reported his defeat in a bar fight. He was also firmly against Lincoln and the war--an opinion he expressed loudly through his newspaper. When his press was destroyed, first by a mob, then by U.S. Marshals "upon authority of the President of the United States," Hodgson decided to take on the entire United States. Thus began a trial in which one small-town publisher risked imprisonment or worse, and the future of free speech hung in the balance. Based on 10 years of original research, Lincoln's Wrath brings to life one of the most gripping, dramatic and unknown stories of U.S. history.

Book Lincoln Emancipated

Download or read book Lincoln Emancipated written by Brian R. Dirck and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Lincoln has long been revered by blacks and whites alike as the “Great Emancipator.” In recent years, however, this image has come under assault by scholars who question Lincoln s commitment to racial equality and who assert that he was in fact, as Frederick Douglass once noted, the “white man s president.” Such arguments challenging deep-seated assumptions about our nation s beloved leader demand serious investigation. What personal beliefs did Lincoln hold about the inherent differences or similarities between blacks and whites? How did his vision for race relations change as a result of the Civil War? What political, legal, and cultural circumstances prompted him to issue the Emancipation Proclamation? And in what ways have Americans chosen to remember Lincoln s legacy? Does he truly deserve his fame as the “Great Emancipator?” In this volume, seven historians attempt to answer these critical questions. Kenneth J. Winkle analyzes the racial climate of the early nineteenth-century Midwest in order to place Lincoln s views in context. Kevin R. C. Gutzman discusses the influence of Thomas Jefferson s racial politics upon Lincoln; and James N. Leiker scrutinizes Lincoln s attitudes toward Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanics as well as toward blacks. Phillip S. Paludan and Brian Dirck describe Lincoln s tortured deliberation over emancipation, while Dennis K. Boman uses Missouri as a case study of the president s delicate handling of this explosive issue. By tracing the changes in Lincoln s proposals for the future of liberated slaves, Michael Vorenberg argues that, despite what many Americans today would consider limitations, Lincoln demonstrated a remarkable open-mindedness and capacity for growth. Allen C. Guelzo opens the volume with a thought-provoking foreword.
