Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on internal sources, Wilfried Loth analyses the birth and subsequent development of the European Union, from the launch of the Council of Europe and the Schuman Declaration until the Euro crisis and the contested European presidential election of Jean-Claude Juncker. This book shines a light on the crises of the European integration, such as the failure of the European Defence Community, De Gaulle’s empty chair policy, or the rejection of the European Constitution in France and the Netherlands, but also highlights the indubitable successes that are the Franco-German reconciliation, the establishment of the European common market, and the establishment of an expanding common currency. What this study accomplishes, for the first time, is to illuminate the driving forces behind the European integration process and how it changed European politics and society. “An enlightening work. Arequired reading for all who doubt the unfinished history of Europe.” – Rolf Steininger, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “This book will become an indispensable standard work.” – Jörg Himmelreich, Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Book The Media European Integration and the Rise of Euro journalism 1950s 1970s

Download or read book The Media European Integration and the Rise of Euro journalism 1950s 1970s written by Martin Herzer and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how the media helped to invent the European Union as the supranational polity that we know today. Against conventional EU scholarship, it tells the story of the rise of the Euro-journalists – pro-European advocacy journalists – within the post-war Western European media, and argues that the Euro-journalists pioneered a shift in the media representation of European integration. During the 1950s, multiple visions of Western European cooperation competed in the media, which initially considered the European Community to be a merely technocratic international organization. By the late 1970s, however, the media were symbolically magnifying the Community as a sui generis European polity and the sole embodiment of Europe. Normative research on the media and European integration has focused on how the media might help to construct a democratic and legitimate European Union. In contrast, this book aims to deconstruct a pro-European advocacy journalism, which became dominant within the Western European media between the 1950s and the 1970s. Moreover, the book shows how journalists – as part of Western European elites – played a key role in elite European identity building campaigns.

Book European Union Research Policy

Download or read book European Union Research Policy written by Veera Mitzner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the emergence of research policy as a key competence of the European Union (EU). It shows how the European Community (EC, the predecessor of the EU), which initially had very limited legal competence in the field, progressively developed a solid policy framework presenting science and research as indispensable tools for European economic competitiveness and growth. In the late 20th century Western Europe, hungry for growth, concerned about the American technological lead, and keen to compete in the increasingly open international markets, the argument for a joint European effort in science and technology seemed plausible. However, the EC was building its new functions in an already crowded field of European research collaboration and in a shifting political context marked by austerity, national rivalries, new societal and environmental challenges, and emerging ambivalence about science. This book conveys the contested history of one of the EU’s most successful policies. It is a story of struggle and frustration but also of a great institutional and intellectual continuity. The ideational edifice for the EC/EU research policy that was put in place during the 1960s and 1970s years proved remarkably robust. Its durability enabled the rapid takeoff of the European Commission’s initiatives in the more favorable political atmosphere of the early 1980s and the subsequent expansion of the EU research funding instruments and programs that permanently transformed the European research landscape.

Download or read book Vichy s Afterlife written by Richard Joseph Golsan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the distinctive features of the "Vichy Syndrome"?the persistence of the memory of the Vichy regime in French political and cultural life?is that it has been extremelyødifficult for an authoritative historical discourse to impose itself. Why does Vichy, and all that the name entails, fascinate and even obsess the French, inflecting not only discussions of the past but of the present as well? In Vichy's Afterlife, Richard J. Golsan explores the complexities of some of the most provocative episodes of Vichy's curious persistence in France's national consciousness. He argues that each of these episodes, events, and scandals constitutes a crossroads where history and "counterhistory"?different or competing versions of the past?encounter one another, often with explosive and even destructive consequences.

Book Political Leadership

Download or read book Political Leadership written by Jean Blondel and published by Sage Publications (CA). This book was released on 1987 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Political leaders are the most universal, recognized, and talked about element of political life. However, the general analysis of political leadership has been little advanced. In this book Professor Blondel provides a general framework for the systematic study of leadership to make possible future empirical study and comparative analysis of political leadership. After examining the current state of political leadership studies, Professor Blondel categorizes the leaders of the world taking into account both their goals and the constraints and opportunities resulting from the environment. Important features and influences on leadership are identified: the sources of personal power, the role of leaders' own psychology and perspective, the instruments of power available to leaders, their relationship with subordinates and citizens, the influence of institutions on leadership and the impact of leaders"--Provided by publisher.
