Book excerpt: The solitary life of the recluse or enclosed anchorite was one of the most extreme, and remains one of the most fascinating, forms of religious life of the Middle Ages. Leaving the world behind, anchorites submitted themselves to a life of perpetual enclosure, locked - or even walled - into a small cell, usually attached to a church. They were enclosed to the accompaniment of the Office of the Dead, and they expected to die and be buried in their cells. Why did people choose to become anchorites? What did they do all day? What rewards did they hope for, in return for the sacrifice they had made? These are the questions addressed and answered in the 'Speculum Inclusorum', a 'rule' for male anchorites dating from the early years of the fifteenth century, and its English translation, designed for an audience of women anchorites, 'A mirror for recluses.' This edition prints the Latin 'Speculum Inclusorum' in parallel with the 'English mirror', and supplies a modern English translation for those parts of the 'Speculum' that are - whether by accident or design - absent from the Middle English. This volume examines Latin and vernacular writings that formed part of a flourishing culture of mystical experience in the later Middle Ages (ca. 1150–1400), including the ways in which visionaries within their literary milieu negotiated the tensions between personal, charismatic inspiration and their allegiance to church authority. It situates texts written in England within their wider geographical and intellectual context through comparative analyses with contemporary European writings. A recurrent theme across all of these works is the challenge that a largely masculine and clerical culture faced in the form of the various, and potentially unruly, spiritualities that emerged powerfully from the twelfth century onward. Representatives of these major spiritual developments, including the communities that fostered them, were often collaborative in their expression. For example, holy women, including nuns, recluses, and others, were recognized by their supporters within the church for their extraordinary spiritual graces, even as these individual expressions of piety were in many cases at variance with securely orthodox religious formations. These writings become eloquent witnesses to a confrontation between inner, revelatory experience and the needs of the church to set limitations upon charismatic spiritualities that, with few exceptions, carried the seeds of religious dissent. Moreover, while some of the most remarkable texts at the centre of this volume were authored (and/or primarily read) by women, the intellectual and religious concerns in play cut across the familiar and all-too-conventional boundaries of gender and social and institutional affiliation.

The solutions are so multifarious that they defy any attempt to outline general theories. This is particularly visible when the same text is translated or rewritten at different times and in different languages or genres. Through a minute analysis of texts this book aims at highlighting lexical, syntactic and stylistic choices dictated not only by the source but also by new readers and patrons, or by new destinations of the works. Established categories such as 'literalness' and 'fidelity' are thus questioned and integrated with these other factors which, while being more 'external', do nonetheless impinge on the very idea of 'translation', and consequently on its assessment. Far from being a mere transfer from one language to another, a medieval translation verges on a form of creative writing, and as such its study becomes a fascinating investigation into the very process of textual production.
