The first three studies in this collection deal with the change in grammatical doctrine that took place in the late 11th and 12th centuries and from which all subsequent developments during the creative period of medieval grammatical speculation derive. The fourth paper deals with a problem that concerns all students of the medieval liberal arts: the unity of learning, as opposed to the present-day compartmentalisation of studies. The remaining three studies deal with the textual materials available to the medieval student of grammar.

It defines a method of reading which may now profitably explain medieval texts, and identifies new primary medieval evidence which may ground and guide new reading. Allen chooses texts whose commentary tradition provides the greatest opportunity for completeness. The most important of these is Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Medieval readings of Ovid bring into focus a number of major literary questions—the problems of fable and fiction, of unity imposed by miscellany poetry, of allegorical commentary, and of Christian use of pagan culture—all in connection with text which furnished medieval authors with more stories than any other single source except possibly the Bible. Allen also studies commentaries on the Consolation of Philosophy of Boethius, the Thebaid of Statius, the De nuptiis of Martianus Capella, the medieval Christian hymn-book, and the Poetria nova of Geoffrey of Vinsauf. Together these texts represent the range of medieval literature—a literature which, Allen concludes, was taken as direct ethical discourse, logically conducted and artfully organized within a system of language that also assimilated the natural world and sought to absorb its audience.

The logic of this period does not have the expressive virtues afforded by the symbolic resources of uninterpreted calculi, but mediaeval logic rivals in range, originality and intellectual robustness a good deal of the modern record. The range of logic in this period is striking, extending from investigation of quantifiers and logic consequence to inquiries into logical truth; from theories of reference to accounts of identity; from work on the modalities to the stirrings of the logic of relations, from theories of meaning to analyses of the paradoxes, and more. While the scope of mediaeval logic is impressive, of greater importance is that nearly all of it can be read by the modern logician with at least some prospect of profit. The last thing that mediaeval logic is, is a museum piece. Book excerpt: An anonymous fourteenth-century treatise that borrows heavily from the Libellus cantus mensurabilis attributed to Johannes de Muris, the Ars cantus mensurabilis mensurata per modos iuris differs from others ars nova treatises in its systematic application of scholastic philosophy and allusions to medieval law. Using music as the subject of inquiry, the writer addresses questions that occupied scholastic philosophers in other fields, such as the natural minimum of a substance and the potentia Dei absoluta. The writer quotes legal maxims and alludes to medieval legal issues such as the lex regia and the Becket controversy to justify and prove the rules of music. A substantial portion of the treatise was first published as Anonymous V in Edmond de Coussemaker's Scriptores de musica medii aevi, where it was paired with a counterpoint treatise beginning "Cum notum sit". The treatise published by Coussemaker, however, is not the entire work. From textual and manuscript evidence, the Greek and Latin Music Theory edition demonstrates that a set of three figures and an introduction are related to the mensural treatise; the same evidence suggests that the counterpoint treatise "Cum notum sit" should not be considered part of the treatise. The GLMT editionøpresents a complete critical text for the treatise together with a facing-page English translation. Annotations to the translation explain the numerous legal and scholastic allusions in the treatise. Also presented are corrected versions of the approximately one hundred musical figures. Preceding the critical text and translation, an extended introduction explains the musical and intellectual sources of the work.
