The model had four propellers distributed along the wing with thrust axes parallel to the fuselage axis. In order to produce direct lift for hovering flight, the propeller slipstream was deflected downward about 70 degrees by a full-span 65-percent-chord flap deflected 90 degrees and eight extensible vanes arranged above the wing in a cascade relation.

Book excerpt: Comparisons are made between a theory for calculating stresses about rectangular cutouts in circular cylinders of semimonocoque construction published in NACA TN 3200 and previously published NACA experimental data. The comparisons include stresses in the stringers and shear stresses in the center of the shear panels in the neighborhood of the cutout. The theory takes into account the bending flexibility of the rings in the structure, and this factor is found to be important in the calculation of stresses about cutouts. In general, when the ring flexibility is considered, good agreement is exhibited between the calculated and experimental results.

Book excerpt: A study was made to determine the probable causes of deterioration of each of several adhesives in bonds to stainless steel at temperatures from 400 to 550 degrees F. Prellminary studies of aluminum surfaces on which ions of metals used in staLnless steel were introduced showed that iron was probably catalyzing a thermal deterioration of the adhesive. The resistance of FPL-878 adhesive to thermal deterioration at 550 degrees F on steel was improved signiffcantly by treating the steel surface to be bonded with either zinc or cerium naphthenate and firing at 1,200 degrees F. The addition of manganese dioxide to the adhesive also increased its resistance to thermal deterioration. A study of the thermal-aging properties of five different chemical types of adhesives on stainless steel and alumina revealed that a phenol-nitrile rubber adhesive was superior to a phenol-epoxy adhesive on steel, but this order was reversed on alumina. These and other observations indicated probable specific relationships among the chemical structure of the adhesive, the metal adherend, and the resultant thermal stability of bonds after aging at high temperatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts of fluid dynamics agree that turbulence is nonlinear and nonlocal. Because of a direct correspondence, nonlocality also implies fractionality. Fractional dynamics is the physics related to fractal (geometrical) systems and is described by fractional calculus. Up-to-present, numerous criticisms of linear and local theories of turbulence have been published. Nonlinearity has established itself quite well, but so far only a very small number of general nonlocal concepts and no concrete nonlocal turbulent flow solutions were available. This book presents the first analytical and numerical solutions of elementary turbulent flow problems, mainly based on a nonlocal closure. Considerations involve anomalous diffusion (Lévy flights), fractal geometry (fractal-β, bi-fractal and multi-fractal model) and fractional dynamics. Examples include a new ‘law of the wall’ and a generalization of Kraichnan’s energy-enstrophy spectrum that is in harmony with non-extensive and non-equilibrium thermodynamics (Tsallis thermodynamics) and experiments. Furthermore, the presented theories of turbulence reveal critical and cooperative phenomena in analogy with phase transitions in other physical systems, e.g., binary fluids, para-ferromagnetic materials, etc.; the two phases of turbulence identifying the laminar streaks and coherent vorticity-rich structures. This book is intended, apart from fluids specialists, for researchers in physics, as well as applied and numerical mathematics, who would like to acquire knowledge about alternative approaches involved in the analytical and numerical treatment of turbulence.
