Book Study of Orbitally Excited B s Mesons and Evidence for a New B pi Resonance with the CDF II Detector

Download or read book Study of Orbitally Excited B s Mesons and Evidence for a New B pi Resonance with the CDF II Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an analysis of excited states of B0, B+ and B0 s mesons, decaying to B mesons while emitting a pion or kaon. They are reconstructed from their decay products and a selection is performed to discard wrongly reconstructed B(s) mesons with the multivariate analysis software NeuroBayes, as described in chapter 5. In the training process, the sPlot method and measured and simulated data are used. Chapter 6 describes how the properties of excited B(s) are determined by an unbinned maximum likelihood t to their mass spectra. The systematic uncertainties determined in this analysis are described in chapter 7. The results of this thesis are presented in chapter 8 and a conclusion is given in chapter 9. The results shown in this thesis have been published before in [1].

Download or read book Studies of Orbitally Excited D s and B Mesons at Cdf and written by Jennifer Pursley and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a large data sample of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF and D0 detectors operating at Fermilab Tevatron, the orbitally excited B mesons B{sub 1} and B*{sub 2} are observed directly as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B{sup (*)}{pi}. The masses and the mass differences between the states are presented. In the charm system, the orbitally excited D mesons D{sub 1} and D*{sub 2} are observed in fully reconstructed decays to D{sup (*)}{pi}. Measurements of the product branching rates of semileptonic decays B {yields} {bar D}**{mu}{sup +}{nu}{sub {mu}}X and their ratio are presented. They also present the observation of the semileptonic decays B{sub s} {yields} {mu}{nu}D**{sub s} where the excited D**{sub s} states are reconstructed in the mode D**{sub s} {yields} D*K{sub S}{sup 0}.

Download or read book Measurement of Orbitally Excited D mesons at CDF II written by Igor V. Gorelov and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of the first measurement of {sup 3}P orbitally excited neutral D-meson states, D*{sub 2}{sup 0} and D{sub 1}{sup 0}, produced in hadron collisions at the Tevatron are presented. Using data from the displaced track trigger, CDF II collects a large sample of these states in decay modes D*{sup +} {pi}{sup -}, D{sup +} {pi}{sup -}. Masses and widths of both states have been measured with precision better than or comparable to that of the world average.

Book excerpt: The authors report on two spectroscopy results from CDF. First, they observe the orbitally excited B** mesons in B --> lD(*) X events. They find 28 " 6 " 3% of light B mesons produced are B** states. A collective mass fit results in a B1 mass of 5.71 " 0.02 GeV/c2. Secondly, they observe 20.4{sub -5.5}{sup +0.18} " 0.03 ps lifetime. The production rate is in reasonable accordance with expectations.

Book Evolution of Silicon Sensor Technology in Particle Physics

Download or read book Evolution of Silicon Sensor Technology in Particle Physics written by Frank Hartmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post era of the Z and W discovery, after the observation of Jets at UA1 and UA2 at CERN, John Ellis visioned at a HEP conference at Lake Tahoe, California in 1983 “To proceed with high energy particle physics, one has to tag the avour of the quarks!” This statement re ects the need for a highly precise tracking device, being able to resolve secondary and tertiary vertices within high-particle densities. Since the d- tance between the primary interaction point and the secondary vertex is proportional tothelifetimeoftheparticipatingparticle,itisanexcellentquantitytoidentifypar- cle avour in a very fast and precise way. In colliding beam experiments this method was applied especially to tag the presence of b quarks within particle jets. It was rst introduced in the DELPHI experiment at LEP but soon followed by all collider - periments to date. The long expected t quark discovery was possible mainly with the help of the CDF silicon vertex tracker, providing the b quark information. In the beginning of the 21st century the new LHC experiments are beginning to take 2 shape. CMS with its 206m of silicon area is perfectly suited to cope with the high luminosity environment. Even larger detectors are envisioned for the far future, like the SiLC project for the International Linear Collider. Silicon sensors matured from small 1in. single-sided devices to large 6in. double-sided, double metal detectors and to 6in. single-sided radiation hard sensors.

Book Measurement of Resonance Parameters of Orbitally Excited Narrow B0 Mesons

Download or read book Measurement of Resonance Parameters of Orbitally Excited Narrow B0 Mesons written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report a measurement of resonance parameters of the orbitally excited (L = 1) narrow B° mesons in decays to B{sup (*)+}?− using 1.7 fb−1 of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The mass and width of the B*2° state are measured to be m(B*2°) = 5740.2{sub -1.8}{sup +1.7}(stat.){sub -0.8}{sup +0.9}(syst.) MeV/c2 and?(B*2°) = 22.7{sub -3.2}{sup +3.8}(stat.){sub -10.2}{sup +3.2}(syst.) MeV/c2. The mass difference between the B*2° and B1° states is measured to be 14.9{sub -2.5}{sup +2.2}(stat.){sub -1.4}{sup +1.2}(syst.) MeV/c2, resulting in a B1° mass of 5725.3{sub -2.2}{sup +1.6}(stat.){sub -1.5}{sup +1.4}(syst.) MeV/c2. This is currently the most precise measurement of the masses of these states and the first measurement of the B*2° width.

Download or read book Meson and Baryon Spectroscopy written by D.B. Lichtenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work originated in a series of lectures on meson and baryon ex cited states which I gave at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in the fall of 1962. The notes of these lectures were issued as a Stanford Uni versity report (SLAC-13) in March, 1963. In the fall of 1963, I gave a revised set of lectures on meson and baryon spectroscopy at Indiana University. In both cases, the talks were given primarily for experi mental physicists. In preparing the notes of these talks for pUblication, I have added some introductory material on pions, nucleons, kaons, and hyperons. My main emphasis is on the experimental facts concerning the spectros copy of the mesons and baryons and on the use of conservation laws in their interpretation. I have either mentioned briefly or omitted entirely explanations which depend on dynamical models. Although I have given a number of facts about the electromagnetic and weak decays of some mesons and baryons, I have not discussed the theory of these decays. This is not a comprehensive review of the subject of the strongly interacting particles, and the list of references is not complete. Also, I have not always devoted time to a subject in proportion to its impor tance, but have spent more time on topics which have particularly interested me. Nevertheless, I hope that I have provided a useful summary of the most important facts about the spectroscopy of the mesons and baryons.

Book Observation of Excited B Mesons in P Pbar Collisions a Square Root S

Download or read book Observation of Excited B Mesons in P Pbar Collisions a Square Root S written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production of orbitally excited (L = 1) states of B mesons, B{sup **}, is studied using a sample of nearly ten thousand partially reconstructed B mesons collected with the CDF detector from p{anti p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV. Ambiguities in the reconstruction of the B flavor and momentum are resolved. The fraction of b quarks that hadronize into an L = 1 state is measured to be 0.28 " 0.06(stat) " 0.03(syst), and the collective mass of the B{sup **} states is measured to be m(B1) = 5.71 " 0.02 GeV/c2 given the mass splittings between the four states.
