Book Vibronic Interactions in Molecules and Crystals

Download or read book Vibronic Interactions in Molecules and Crystals written by Isaac B. Bersuker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibronic interaction effects constitute a new field of investigation in the physics and chemistry of molecules and crystals that combines all the phenomena and laws originating from the mixing of different electronic states by nuclear displacements. This field is based on a new concept which goes beyond the separate descriptions of electronic and nuclear motions in the adiabatic approximation. Publications on this topic often appear under the title of the lahn-Thller effect, although the area of application of the new approach is much wider: the term vibronic interaction seems to be more appropriate to the field as a whole. The present understanding of the subject was reached only recently, during the last quarter of a century. As a result of intensive development of the theory and experiment, it was shown that the nonadiabatic mixing of close-in-energy elec tronic states under nuclear displacements and the back influence of the modified electronic structure on the nuclear dynamics result in a series of new effects in the properties of molecules and crystals. The applications of the theory of vibronic in of spectroscopy [including visible, ultraviolet, in teractions cover the full range frared, Raman, EPR, NMR, nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), nuclear gam ma resonance (NOR), photoelectron and x-ray spectroscopy], polarizability and magnetic susceptibility, scattering phenomena, ideal and impurity crystal physics and chemistry (including structural as well as ferroelectric phase transitions), stereochemistry and instability of molecular (including biological) systems, mechanisms of chemical reactions and catalysis.

Book Spectroscopy of Molecular Excitons

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Molecular Excitons written by Vladimir L. Broude and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-temperature spectroscopy of organic molecular crystals came into being in the late 20s, just when quantum physics of solids as a whole began to de velop vigorously. Already in the early works, two experimental facts of prime importance were discovered: the presence of a multitude of narrow bands in the low-temperature spectrum of a crystal, and a close relationship between the spectrum of the crystal and that of the constituent molecules. These findings immediately preceded the celebrated paper of Frenkel in which he went beyond the framework of Bloch's scheme and advanced the exciton concept. Subsequent investigations showed that the most interesting features of the spectra of molecular crystals are associated with excitons, and then the spectroscopy of molecular excitons began to form gradually on the basis of the spectroscopy of organic crystals. The molecular exciton became synonymous to the Frenkel exciton in a molecular crystal. In view of the difficulties involved in the analysis of rich spectra con taining many tens of bands, the spectroscopy of molecular crystals had long been connected most closely with the spectroscopy of molecules. It had deve loped independently, to a large extent, from the other branches of solid state physics. This was also emphasized by the difference in experimental techniques, the specific properties of the objects, etc. As a result, there was some lag in ideas and concepts.

Book Optical Spectra and Lattice Dynamics of Molecular Crystals

Download or read book Optical Spectra and Lattice Dynamics of Molecular Crystals written by G.N. Zhizhin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-10-17 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current volume is a single topic volume on the optical spectra and lattice dynamics of molecular crystals. The book is divided into two parts. Part I covers both the theoretical and experimental investigations of organic crystals. Part II deals with the investigation of the structure, phase transitions and reorientational motion of molecules in organic crystals. In addition appendices are given which provide the parameters for the calculation of the lattice dynamics of molecular crystals, procedures for the calculation of frequency eigenvectors of utilizing computers, and the frequencies and eigenvectors of lattice modes for several organic crystals. Quite a large amount of Russian literature is cited, some of which has previously not been available to scientists in the West.

Book Vibrational Spectroscopy of Molecules on Surfaces

Download or read book Vibrational Spectroscopy of Molecules on Surfaces written by Theodore E. Madey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observation of the vibrational spectra of adsorbed species provides one of the most incisive methods for und erst an ding chemical and physical phenomena on surfaces. At the present time, many approaches may be applied to studies of molecular vibrations on surfaces. Some of these are used on high-area solids of technological importance (e.g., heterogeneous catalysts) while others are applied to single-crystal substrates to gain better understanding under conditions of controlled surface structure. This book has attempted to bring together in one place a discussion of the major methods used to measure vibrational spectra of surface species. The emphasis is on basic concepts and experimental methods rather than a current survey of the extensive literature in this field. Two introductory chapters describe the basic theoretical aspects of vibrational spectroscopy on surfaces, dealing with normal modes and excitation mechanisms in vibrational spectroscopy. The remaining seven chapters deal with various methods employed to observe surface vibra tions. These are arranged in an order that first treats the use of various methods on surfaces that are not of the single-crystal type. It is in this area that the field first got started in the late 1940s with pioneering work by Terenin and others in the Soviet Union, and by Eisehens and others in the United States in the 1950s. The last four chapters deal with relatively recent methods that permit vibrational studies to be made on single crystal substrates.

Book Luminescence of Crystals Molecules and Solutions

Download or read book Luminescence of Crystals Molecules and Solutions written by Ferd Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings report the scholarly work presented in Leningrad at the largest conference ever held on luminescence. In addition to the large number of delegates, the Conference was dis tinguished by strong and balanced representation on the program of papers from capitalist and socialist nations. The Conference was sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and by the Academy of Science of the USSR. As noted in the Opening Ceremony, this Conference is in the series held approximately every three years since 1938. All branches of luminescence are included. It was recognized, during the early stages of organization of the Conference, that there would be difficulties associated with the preparation of an English version of the Proceedings. Until just before the Conference, it was not evident whether translations of the Russian papers would be available and whether facilities would exist at the Conference for a working publication committee to edit the manuscripts. It was not possible, therefore, to make contractual arrangements before the Conference for publication.

Book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals 2e

Download or read book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals 2e written by Joel Bernstein and published by International Union of Crystal. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are familiar with the fact that diamond and graphite are both composed only of carbon; yet they have very different properties which result from the very different structures of the two solids - they are polymorphs of carbon. Understanding the relationship between the structures and the properties of materials is of fundamental importance in developing and producing new materials with improved or new properties. The existence of polymorphic systems allows the direct study of the connection between structures and properties. This book provides grounding on the fundamental structural and energetic basis for polymorphism, the preparation and characterization of polymorphic substances and its importance in the specific areas of pharmaceuticals, pigments and high energy (explosive) materials. The closing chapter describes the intellectual property implications and some of the precedent patent litigations in which polymorphism has played a central role. The book contains over 2500 references to provide a ready entry into the relevant literature.
