Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unified treatment introduces upper-level undergraduates and graduate students to the concepts and methods of modern molecular spectroscopy and their applications to quantum electronics, lasers, and related optical phenomena. Starting with a review of the prerequisite quantum mechanical background, the text examines atomic spectra and diatomic molecules, including the rotation and vibration of diatomic molecules and their electronic spectra. A discussion of rudimentary group theory advances to considerations of the rotational spectra of polyatomic molecules and their vibrational and electronic spectra; molecular beams, masers, and lasers; and a variety of forms of spectroscopy, including optical resonance spectroscopy, coherent transient spectroscopy, multiple-photon spectroscopy, and spectroscopy beyond molecular constants. The text concludes with a series of useful appendixes.

Book Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terminology

Download or read book Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terminology written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific and technical contacts between nations· have necessitated the publication of various language textbooks, manuals and reference books. Particularly important among them are multilingual scientifio and technical dictionaries. This English-German-French-Dutch-Russian Dictionary of Scientifio and Technical Terms contains some 9000 entries. The main fea ture of the Dictionary is that it includes first and foremost general scientific terms needed by an engineer working in any branch of science and technology. Besides, the Dictionary includes the basic terms used in physics, mathemat ics, the fundamentals of electrical engineering and chemistry, and also the most essential terms pertaining to manufacturing processes. machine design, testing methods, etc. The Compilers were confronted with a difficult task, as nowadays science and technology are developing rapidly and the minimum scientific and tech nical vocabulary required by a specialist is increasing accordingly. The Compilers have taken special pains to include the entire basic mod ern technical vocabulary, omitting superfluous words and phrases. They have tried to solve this problem by selecting mainly those scientific and tech nical terms which constitute the basic of a specialised vocabulary. There fore, the Dictionary includes the vocabulary pertaining to general study courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and also in electrical engi neering. electronics and machine design, given in technical colleges irrespect ive of their specification. This lends the Dictionary an «all-purpose» char acter, making it equally useful to scientists and engineers of different countries, who have graduated from colleges with different curricula.

Book Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the Atmosphere

Download or read book Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the Atmosphere written by Claude Camy-Peyret and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Research Workshop entitled “Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs: Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the At- sphere” was held in Abbaye de Fontevraud, France, from April 29 to May 3, 2002. The meeting involved 40 researchers from 14 countries. The goal of this meeting was to address a problem that the scienti?c community is aware of for many years. Up now, however, the so- tion for this problem is far from satisfactory. Pair e?ects are called unconventional in the title of this meeting. In speci?c spectral domains and/or geophysical conditions they are recognized to play a dominant role in the absorption/emission properties of the atmosphere. Water vapor continuum absorption is among the most prominent examples. Permanently improving accuracy of both laboratory studies and ?eld observations requires better knowledge of the spectroscopic features - tributable to molecular pairs which may form at equilibrium. The Workshop was targeted both to clarify the pending questions and, as far as feasible, to trace the path to possible answers since the underlying phenomena are yet incompletely understood and since a reliable theory is often not available. On the other hand, the lack of precise laboratory data on bimolecular absorption is often precluding the construction of reliable theoretical models. Ideally, the knowledge accumulated in the course of laboratory studies should correlate with the practical demands from those who are carrying out atmospheric ?eld measurements and space observations.
