Book Spectroscopic Study of Combustion Diagnostics on Hydroxyl Radicals

Download or read book Spectroscopic Study of Combustion Diagnostics on Hydroxyl Radicals written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental observations of propane-air flames were performed. Measurements of hydroxyl (OH) radical concentration were made using resonance line absorption techniques. A microwave-pumped low pressure discharge in argon and water vapor is employed to produce strong OH radical band radiation in the 308 nm region. This radiation is transmitted through the plume and absorption data are taken at various radical positions using an optical multichannel analyzer. This absorption data is used to compute OH number density using a model for the absorption band characteristics as a function of temperature based on an atlas of line strengths. A numerical computation of flow fields, temperature profile and OH number density is carried out by using a technique of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of CFD computation are good compared with experimental observation with a good agreement. Hung, R. J. Unspecified Center NAG8-102...

It provides a snapshot of the available diagnostic methods and thier typical applications from the perspective of leading experts in the field.

Book Theoretical Studies of the Reactions and Spectroscopy of Radical Species Relevant to Combustion Reactions and Diagnostics

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of the Reactions and Spectroscopy of Radical Species Relevant to Combustion Reactions and Diagnostics written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the use of our electronic structure algorithms to treat nonadiabatic processes relevant to combustion diagnostics and combustion reactions during the first nine months of Department of Energy grant DE-FG02-91ER14189 and outlines future work to be performed. During this period problems have been addressed in detail: (1) the possibility of using photoionization spectroscopy to detect CH3O, (2) the lifetimes of the individual ro-vibronic levels in OH(v=3) a state that has been suggested as a fluorescence probe of OH produced in combustion environments and (3) the basic mechanism for the spin-forbidden initiating step in the Fenimore mechanism for the production of NO in flame fronts, CH(X2??220??) + N2(X1?{sub g}) → HCN(X1?+) + N(4S).

Book Reactions of Hydroxyl Radicals with Oxygenated Hydrocarbons in the Gas Phase A Laser Photolysis Laser Induced Fluorescence Study

Download or read book Reactions of Hydroxyl Radicals with Oxygenated Hydrocarbons in the Gas Phase A Laser Photolysis Laser Induced Fluorescence Study written by Cornelie Bänsch and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydroxyl radicals (OH) play a key role in ignition processes and in the atmosphere. Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

Book Advanced Diagnostics in Combustion Science

Download or read book Advanced Diagnostics in Combustion Science written by Zhen-Yu Tian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, supported by the Textbook Publishing Center of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, provides a fundamental introduction to advanced diagnostics techniques for graduate students majoring in combustion science, chemistry, and chemical engineering-related subjects. The textbook provides an overview with respect to the spectroscopic methods in advanced diagnostics techniques such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, thermochemical analysis, Raman scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance. It then describes the comprehensive basic theory, equipment structure, and testing methods of diagnostic techniques and summarizes the analysis methods commonly used in combustion chemical reaction processes. This can provide graduate students with important guidance and comprehensive understanding of diagnostics techniques before performing physics and chemistry experiments. In addition, it provides an introduction into using common mathematical and graphics packages for students to acquire and practice the tools to comply with international standards. The textbook is concise and illustrative and includes hot issues and current progress of diagnostics. In addition, exercises and questions are included at the end of each chapter for students to practice and gain hands-on experience. Given its scope, the textbook is of great benefit to graduate students in combustion chemistry and engineering and other related areas such as environmental science, optical engineering, and thermal science and is also beneficial for researchers with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been thirty years since one of the authors (EJD) began a collaboration with Professor Milton Kerker at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York using light scattering methods to study aerosol processes. The development of a relatively short-lived commercial particle levitator based on a modification of the Millikan oil drop experiment attracted their attention and led the author to the study of single droplets and solid microparticles by levitation methods. The early work on measurements of droplet evaporation rates using light scattering techniques to determine the size slowly expanded and diversified as better instrumentation was developed, and faster computers made it possible to perform Mie theory light scattering calculations with ease. Several milestones can be identified in the progress of single microparticle studies. The first is the introduction of the electrodynamic balance, which provided more robust trapping of a particle. The electrodynamic levitator, which has played an important role in atomic and molecular ion spectroscopy, leading to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1989 shared by Wolfgang Paul of Bonn University and Hans Dehmelt of the University of Washington, was easily adapted to trap microparticles. Simultaneously, improvements in detectors for acquiring and storing light scattering data and theoretical and experimental studies of the interesting optical properties of microspheres, especially the work on morphology dependent resonances by Arthur Ashkin at the Bell Laboratories, Richard Chang, from Yale University, and Tony Campillo from the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington D. C.

Book Asynchronous Optical Sampling for Laser Based Combustion Diagnostics in High Pressure Flames

Download or read book Asynchronous Optical Sampling for Laser Based Combustion Diagnostics in High Pressure Flames written by Galen B. King and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes progress on the development of a new laser based combustion diagnostic method for the quantitative measurement of both major and minor species in high pressure flames. The technique, Asynchronous Optical Sampling (ASOPS), is a state of the art improvement in picosecond pump/probe laser spectroscopy. The ASOPS signal has been observed using a solution of rhodamine B in methanol as the sample. The response of the instrument was shown to be proportional to pump power, probe power, and sample absorptance. Different frequency synthesizers and different modes of triggering were used to study their effect on signal stability. Cavity dumpers and frequency doublers have been added to the instrument to prepare for the measurement of the hydroxyl radical in atmosphere laminar flames.
