The unique aspects of this optical probe allow us to determine the frictional force between a two-dimensional Fermi liquid of electrons and a dilute gas of holes. Knowledge of electron-hole friction enables prediction of ambipolar dynamics in high-mobility electron systems.

Book excerpt: The lowest energy interband transitions in AlGaAs/AlAs quantum wells involve electrons localized in the AlAs x-valleys and holes confined in the AlGaAs layers. These transitions are indirect in both real as well as in kappa-space and are accompanied by strong replicas of the GaAs and AlAs phonons. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the layers a large reduction in the recombination intensity is observed. This reduction is attributed to magnetic field induced localization of the carriers which results in a reduction of the electron-hole wavefunction overlap. We have also studied photoluminescence spectra from type-II, n-type, modulation doped GaAs/AlAs quantum wells due to radiative recombination of electrons localized in the AlAs x-valleys with holes confined in the GaAs layers. In the presence of a magnetic field the emission spectra exhibit features associated with transitions among the AlAs x-valley Landau levels and photo-injected holes. The slopes of these transitions yield an effective mass m = 0.44 for the electrons.

Book excerpt: The dramatic impact of low dimensional semiconductor structures on c- rent and future device applications cannot be overstated. Research over the last decade has highlighted the use of quantum engineering to achieve p- viously unknown limits for device performance in research laboratories. The modi?ed electronic structure of semiconductor quantum structures results in transport and optical properties, which di?er from those of constituent bulk materials. The possibility to tailor properties, such as bandgap, strain, band o?set etc. , of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, e. g. quantum wells, for speci?c purposes has had an extensive impact on the electronics, which has resulted in a dramatic renewal process. For instance, 2D structures are today used in a large number of high speed electronics and optoelectronic appli- tions (e. g. detectors, light emitting diodes, modulators, switches and lasers) and in daily life, in e. g. LED-based tra?c lights, CD-players, cash registers. The introduction of impurities, also in very small concentrations, in a semiconductor can change its optical and electrical properties entirely. This attribute of the semiconductor is utilized in the manifoldness of their app- cations. This fact constitutes the principal driving force for investigation of the properties of the impurities in semiconductors. While the impurities in bulk materials have been investigated for a long time, and their properties are fairly well established by now, the corresponding studies of impurities in quantum wells is a more recent research area.

Book excerpt: Spin dynamics in semiconductors have gained much interest in the past years due to the emerging field of semiconductor spintronics. This review is focussed on the observation and control of electron and hole spin dynamics in modulation-doped heterostructures based on the GaAs/AlGaAs material system. Modulation doping allows for the creation of two-dimensional electron and hole systems with high carrier mobility. By confining carriers to a two-dimensional sheet, the spin-orbit interaction is modified significantly. In addition to this, it can be further modified by changing the symmetry of the system, for example by externally applied or built-in electric fields along the growth direction. Our recent experimental results on spin dynamics in two dimensions are reviewed and discussed in connection with theoretical considerations. A brief overview of the current research challenges in this field is given.

Book excerpt: We summarize our work over the last five years on high pressure studies using optical techniques such as photoluminescence, photoreflectance and Raman scattering of GaAs/AlAs superlattices, polycrystalline and amorphous powder samples of phenylene-type polymers and oligomers, ordered and disordered GaInP2, and ZnCdSe heterostructures. In order to modulate interatomic electronic interactions in the conventional semiconductors and to study both intrachain and interchain interactions in the conjugated polymers, these investigations were performed at hydrostatic pressures up to 70 kbar and in a temperature range of 20 to 300 K. We report characteristic changes of the emission spectrum which depend on both the molecular environment as well as the intramolecular bond configuration.

The Panel has since funded many Advanced Research Workshops, Advanced Study Institutes, Cooperative Research Grants and Research Visits across the breadth of its remit, which stretches from self-organizing organic molecules to semiconductor structures having two, one and zero dimensions. The funded activities, especially the workshops, have allowed researchers from within NATO countries to exchange ideas and work together at a period of development of the field when such interactions are most valuable. Such timely support has undoubtedly assisted the development of national programs, particularly in the countries of the alliance wishing to strengthen their science base. A closing Workshop to mark the end of the Panel's activities was organized in Marmaris, Turkey from April 23-27, 1990, with the same title as the Panel: Condensed systems of Low Dimensionality. This volume contains papers presented at that meeting, which sought to bring together chemists, physicists and engineers from across the spectrum of the Panel's activities to discuss topics of current interest in their special fields and to exchange ideas about the effects of low dimensionality. In order to give an overview, 37 lecturers not only reviewed the latest results in their field, but also gave a general introduction. The rapid development of semiconductor physics and technology during the last few years has resulted in an extensive application of high magnetic fields in both fundamental and applied research; more than 160 contributed papers were presented as posters.Sixteen years after its discovery, the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is still a subject of high activity. Many new results on the fractional QHE were presented; in addition to 6 invited papers, there were 43 contributions. Another field of high activity is magneto-optics, and 49 posters were presented. Magnetotransport also turned out to be of high interest, and magnetic semiconductors played a prominent role at the conference, too.Without doubt, the availability of superconducting magnets in most laboratories contributed to the growth of semiconductor physics in high magnetic fields. Because not all experiments can be performed in fields up to 10 or 15 teslas, high magnetic field laboratories offering larger fields are indispensable. There were reports from four laboratories on present work going on at these installations.

The study of semiconductor interfaces, quantum wells and super lattices has come to represent a substantial proportion of all work in condensed matter physics.
