The properties of these 'hot stars' and similar stars in other galaxies challenge the current, well-established theory of stellar evolution in many ways. Studying the collective properties of these stars provides important input to many areas of astrophysics - including the formation of our Galaxy, the late phases of stellar evolution and the stellar populations of other galaxies. The study of hot stars in the halo of our Galaxy is undergoing an exciting renaissance owing to important new observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and ASTRO1 and to techniques recently developed for ground-based observations. Advances in computers have also recently led to a far more detailed and complete theoretical understanding of stellar evolution. A conference was held in Union College, New York, to gather experts in the field and this volume draws together their articles to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review for graduate students and researchers.

This meeting gave an opportunity to world experts on this subject to gather in Athens, in order to discuss the cur rent exploitation and the impending opportunities that exist in the area of multi-object spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on: 1. Astronomical instruments, data acquisition, processing and analysis techniques. 2. Astrophysical problems best tackled through wide-field, multi-object spectroscopy. The new fibre optic technology offers an important tool for the advancement of basic research and the development of industrial applications. Astronom ical spectroscopy is a field of astronomy which has contributed much to the advancement of fundamental physics. The spectra of hot stars have been used to determine the well-known Balmer formula for the wavelength of hydrogen lines, in the late 19th century. Since then, spectroscopy has made enormous progress in stellar atmosphere studies, in kinematics, and in the detection of high redshifts in the Universe. The traditional techniques of obtaining wide-field spectroscopic data are based on slitless spectroscopy (objective prism). Several observations, world wide, make use ofthese tech niques in order to obtain information on the spectral properties of objects in large areas of the sky.

Book excerpt: Highly ionized atoms in the general interstellar gas of the galactic disk were first detected through interstellar absorption line observations of 0 VI with the Copernicus satellite (Rogerson et al. 1973). Survey measurements by Jenkins (1978) of interstellar 0 VI absorption toward 72 stars demonstrated the general presence of 0 VI in the interstellar medium of the galactic disk. This researcIi. and parallel observational studies of the soft X-ra}' background (Williamson et al. 1974; McCammon et al. 1983; Marshall and ClarK 1984) provided direct evidence for the existence of hot low density gas in the mterstellar medium of the galactic disk. The extension of the aDsorption line studies to the distant gas of the galactic halo required the launch of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite in 1978. The first measures of highly ionized gas m the galactic halo were obtained with the IDE when it was used to record high resolution spectra of bright stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (Savage and de Boer 1979). Those early spectra revealed the presence of absorption by Si IV and C IV in the galactic nalo and have been followed by a number of surveys with IUE of nighly ionized gas in the galactic disk and halo (Savage and de Boer 1981; Pettini and West 1982; Savage and Massa 1987). The study of UV emission from highly ionized gas in the halo has progressed more slowly because of the intrinsic faintness of the emission.

We now know that Eta Carinae was not a true supernova, but if it were observed today in a distant galaxy we would call it a "supernova impostor". 170 years ago it experienced a "great eruption" lasting 20 years, expelling 10 solar masses or more, and survived. Eta Carinae is now acknowledged as the most massive, most luminous star in our region of the Galaxy, and it may be our only example of a very massive star in a pre-supernova state. In this book the editors and contributing authors review its remarkable history, physical state of the star and its ejecta, and its continuing instability. Chapters also include its relation to other massive, unstable stars, the massive star progenitors of supernovae, and the "first" stars in the Universe.
