Book excerpt: Ultraviolet and visible (UV-VIS, 200-750 nm) atomic spectroscopy of neutral and ion fuel species (H, D, T, Li) and impurities (e.g. He, Be, C, W) is a key element of plasma control and diagnosis on ITER and future magnetically confined burning plasma experiments (BPX). Spectroscopic diagnostic implementation and performance issues that arise in the BPX harsh nuclear environment in the UV-VIS range, e.g., degradation of first mirror reflectivity under charge-exchange atom bombardment (erosion) and impurity deposition, permanent and dynamic loss of window and optical fiber transmission under intense neutron and [gamma]-ray fluxes, are either absent or not as severe in the near-infrared (NIR, 750-2000 nm) range. An initial survey of NIR diagnostic applications has been undertaken on the National Spherical Torus Experiment. It is demonstrated that NIR spectroscopy can address machine protection and plasma control diagnostic tasks, as well as plasma performance evaluation and physics studies. Emission intensity estimates demonstrate that NIR measurements are possible in the BPX plasma operating parameter range. Complications in the NIR range due to parasitic background emissions are expected to occur at very high plasma densities, low impurity densities, and at high plasma facing component temperatures.

Critical issues related with the measurements of fast particles, fusion products, plasma facing components and radiation effects were addressed as well as new areas of diagnostic developments related with DEMO, the next step fusion reactor that will deliver electrical power from fusion.

Book excerpt: During 1991, the activities of the John Hopkins University Plasma Spectroscopy Group have covered several areas of research, in the domain of XUV spectroscopy of magnetically confined fusion plasmas. While the main effort concentrated on the development of novel diagnostics which utilize Layered Synthetic Microstructures (LSMs) as the dispersive/filtering elements, work has been done in the area of detector development and the physics of the tokamak edge plasma. An XUV monochromator for the 20--200Å range, which uses flat LSMs, has been built and is currently operated on the D3-D tokamak at General Atomics in San Diego. A design for a follow-up experiment at D3-D is now in progress. As a preliminary step toward tokamak plasma imaging in the XUV wavelength range using curved LSM coated substrates, a prototype XUV camera was built and operated in our laboratory in image the A1 3 emission at?-175Å from a Penning Ionization Discharge plasma. Based on these laboratory results, the design of the XUV camera, which will image plasma in the Phaedrus T tokamak O VI emission (150Å), has been completed. This instrument is presently under construction. Also a detailed design of a system composed of four LSM based imaging devices for N{sub e}(0) and T{sub e}(0) fluctuation measurements on TEXT has been completed. The accuracy and the uniformity of the LSM coatings on flat and small curved surfaces used in the above-mentioned instruments have been evaluated in our laboratory using an in-house built calibration facility and at the SURF II synchrotron at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Book excerpt: This report gives the details of experiments performed to measure the levels and the angular distribution of oscillating electric fields in an aluminum plasma produced by the Phoenix advanced pulsed radiation source. The electric field values were obtained by measuring the L (beta), L (gamma), L (sigma), and L (epsilon) line profiles of Al XIII and fitting the profiles to a model for the Phoenix plasma source. The model attempts to take into account all of the mechanisms which lead to broadening of the observed profiles for the conditions present in the Phoenix plasma. The main broadening mechanisms used in the model include Doppler broadening from the bulk motion of the plasma, stark broadening by electrons, ions and oscillating electric fields, and self absorption. In addition to the flat crystal and two curved crystal spectrometers used to measure the lines profiles, a pinhole camera and a four frame camera were used to try and obtain the size of the most dense retions in the plasma. The size of these "hot spots" were found to be less than 500 microns. From fits of the experimental profiles to the data, the level of anomalous electric fields in the Phoenix plasma source were found to be Eo = 1 - 9 Gv/cm, indicative of a strong Langmuir turbulence. The fields were also found to develop anisotropically, primarily along the direction of the discharge.

A burning plasmaâ€"in which at least 50 percent of the energy to drive the fusion reaction is generated internallyâ€"is an essential step to reach the goal of fusion power generation. The Burning Plasma Assessment Committee was formed to provide advice on this decision. The committee concluded that there is high confidence in the readiness to proceed with the burning plasma step. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), with the United States as a significant partner, was the best choice. Once a commitment to ITER is made, fulfilling it should become the highest priority of the U.S. fusion research program. A funding trajectory is required that both captures the benefits of joining ITER and retains a strong scientific focus on the long-range goals of the program. Addition of the ITER project will require that the content, scope, and level of U.S. fusion activity be defined by program balancing through a priority-setting process initiated by the Office of Fusion Energy Science.

Book excerpt: A spectroscopic diagnostic tool has been developed to determine the electron temperature and the neutral density in helium, hydrogen and argon plasmas from absolutely calibrated spectroscopic measurements. For each gas, a method of analysis which uses models specific to each species present in the plasma (neutral atom or singly ionized atom) has been defined. The experimental electron density is used as an input parameter to the models, and the absolutely calibrated spectroscopic data are processed beforehand to obtain the populations of the upper excited levels corresponding to the observed spectral lines. For helium plasmas, the electron temperature is inferred from the experimental helium ion excited level p = 4 population using a corona model, and then the neutral density is determined from the experimental helium neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for helium neutrals. For hydrogen plasmas, combinations of the electron temperature and the neutral density are determined from the experimental hydrogen neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model specific to hydrogen atoms. For argon plasmas, the electron temperature is inferred from the experimental argon ion excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for argon ions, and then the neutral density is determined from the experimental argon neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for argon neutrals. This diagnostic tool was applied to three experiments with different geometries and plasma conditions to test the validity of each data analysis method. The helium and hydrogen data analysis methods were tested and validated on helium and hydrogen plasmas produced in the VASIMR experiment, a plasma propulsion system concept. They gave electron temperatures and neutral densities that were consistent with other diagnostics and theory. The argon diagnostic tool was tested on argon plasmas produced in the VASIMR experiment, the Helimak experiment and the Helicon experiment. The electron temperature and neutral density obtained on both the Helimak and the Helicon experiments were consistent with other diagnostics and with theory, and validated the method of analysis. An impurity problem on the VASIMR experiment made it difficult for the data analysis to be validated.

Book excerpt: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been identied as a promising technique for the detection and characterization of nuclear materials and other materials relevant for nuclear forensics and international safeguards applications. LIBS is a material characterization method whereby a short-pulse, high-intensity laser is focused on the surface of a target to generate a plasma for spectral analysis to determine the elemental and potentially isotopic composition of the target. Shadowgraphic and fast-frame photographic imaging are two established techniques used to study the time-evolution and the rate of expansion of laser-produced plasmas over hundreds of nanoseconds. The modication of a LIBS experimental setup to include the capability to take photographic images and high-temporal resolution shadowgraphic images is presented. Analysis of uranium samples was performed in air and vacuum conditions. Shadowgraphic imaging was used to analyze laser produced plasma evolution in the rst 8 ns following laser-energy deposition on the surface. Algorithms were developed to measure the plasma radius as a function of time and the results of that analysis were compared to the Sedov-Taylor model.
