Book Studies in Molybdenum Oxide Catalysts

Download or read book Studies in Molybdenum Oxide Catalysts written by David Earl Huffman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cocondensation reactions of molybdenum trioxide vapor with tetraalkoxysilanes, trimethylalkoxysilanes, and hexamethyldisiloxane at -196°C were investigated. The products from the metal vapor reactions of tetramethoxysilane, tetraethoxysilane, and tetrapropoxysilane were characterized as molybdenum(VI)dioxodialkoxy compounds. The isolated compounds were found to be polymeric in the solid state by bridging through alkoxide groups. Metal vapor reaction of trimethylmethoxysilane gave an inseparable mixture of molybdenum(VI)alkoxysiloxy compounds which were also polymeric in nature. The metal vapor reactions of tetra-2-butoxysilane and trimethyl-t-butoxysilane gave butenes as a primary organic product and an uncharacterized blue molybdenum-containing solid. All products isolated in this study were sensitive to atmospheric moisture and light. The molybdenumdioxoalkoxy and molybdenumdioxoalkoxysiloxy compounds are good model compounds for the oxidation of alcohols. Decomposition studies of Mo(0)2(OMe)2 and Mo(0)2(OMe)x(OSiMe3)y yielded oxidation products of methanol, including dimethylether, formaldehyde, methyl formate, and dimethoxymethane. The reactivity of Mo(0)2(OEt)2 towards acidic protons was used to attach the molybdenum(VI)dioxo group to the surface of alumina (Al203), silica (Si02), titania (Ti02), zirconia (Zr02), and HY-zeolite. Chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopic studies indicate that dioxomolybdenum is attached to the support through bridging oxides between the support metal and molybdenum. The +2, +4, and +6 oxidation states of the surface attached molybdenum could be accessed by oxidation or reduction with 02 or H2, respectively. A survey of the catalytic nature for oxidation, metathesis, and Fischer- Tropsch synthesis of the supported molybdenum compounds in appropriate oxidation states was made. Dramatic differences in the activity and selectivity for oxidation of alcohols were observed depending on the support used. The Ti02 supported Mo(VI) showed the highest activity and selectivity for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. The A1203 supported Mo(IV) system was the most active catalyst for propylene metathesis with the Si02 supported Mo(IV) system showing much less activity.

Book The Spectroscopic and Structural Characterization of Chlorine Modification of MoOx Catalysts Supported Over Silica titania Mixed Oxides for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane and Propane

Download or read book The Spectroscopic and Structural Characterization of Chlorine Modification of MoOx Catalysts Supported Over Silica titania Mixed Oxides for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane and Propane written by Chang Liu and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In this study, the use of molybdenum catalysts supported over silica-titania mixed-oxides has been investigated in regard to their activity for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane and propane. The incorporation of chlorine was able to improve the ethylene and propylene formation rates up to Cl/Mo=2.0. The effect of chlorine dopants on the catalyst surface characteristics and, in turn, on the catalytic performance in ethane and propane ODH has been examined. The catalysts used in this study have been synthesized by a modified "one-pot" sol gel/co-precipitation technique. The main focus of the work has been characterization of the surface molybdena species, physical-chemical properties of the Si:Ti support, reducibility, adsorption/desorption behavior, and surface intermediates present during the reaction. Catalysts were characterized by physical adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), laser Raman spectroscopy (LSR), diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), temperature programmed desorption/reaction (TPD/TPrxn), electron spin resonance (ESR), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analyses (SSITKAS). The characterization results are correlated to the catalytic performance to achieve a better understanding of chlorine-modified catalysts.

Book Spectroscopic Study of Supported MoS2 Catalysts for HER Electrocatalysis in Acidic Media

Download or read book Spectroscopic Study of Supported MoS2 Catalysts for HER Electrocatalysis in Acidic Media written by Limor Ben Neon and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand in new energy vectors as alternatives for fossil fuels with zero CO2 emission is increasing. Hydrogen seems to be a good candidate since its production without any CO2 emission is feasible through (photo)-electrocatalytic water splitting. At the cathode, the state-of-the-art catalyst for the reduction of protons is Pt/C due to its oxygen resistance, long stability against corrosion, hydrogen adsorption affinity and good conductivity. However, platinum is expensive making scaling-up production of H2 unaffordable. In order to generate low cost energy for man-kind, stable, highly active and efficient electrocatalysts need to be developed from non-precious and earth-abundant metals. In this purpose, MoS2, a dichalcogenide which is abundant, stable, nontoxic and not expensive has received lot of attention. However, HER activity of MoS2 is lower than the one for platinum. In this PhD thesis an effort in characterizing MoS2 active sites for HER was made in order to reach a broader insight into the relation between surface characteristics of MoS2 and HER activity. By conducting IR/CO spectroscopy studies of supported MoS2 and by using different methods to increase MoS2 edge site exposition and enhance the carrier's conductivity, several key parameters influencing HER activity were determined such as molybdenum's electron density, Mo dispersion and the morphology of the carrier. For the latter, a significant decrease in Tafel slope was demonstrated when bulk TiO2 was replaced by TiO2 nanotubes (TiNT). This enhancement in kinetics was related to the improved charge transfer of sulfided TiNT and the weakening of MoS2/support interaction strengthening Mo-H-binding. Herein, the determined key parameters in this work give the opportunity to engineer HER electrocatalyst more efficiently and strategically.
