The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.

Différents efforts d' optimisation des techniques d' ablation laser couplée à la spectrométrie d' ionisation assistée par laser (LALEI) et de spectrométrie de plasma induit par laser (LIBS) ont mené à l'obtention d' excellents résultats analytiques pour des échantillons poudreux. Divers aspects importants en analyse, comme la possibilité d' utiliser des étalons solides à concentration ajustable, l'importance de l'homogénéité dans la distribution des analytes, l'importance de disposer d' étalons dont la matrice est similaire à celle des échantillons ou d'être en mesure de corriger les signaux obtenus avec des matrices différentes et l'influence de l'environnement gazeux sur la dynamique d'expansion du plasma et sur la rapidité de perçage d'une cible, ont été étudiés. Grâce entre autre à la technique de shadowgraphy (qui a aussi servi à évaluer l' influence de l'environnement gazeux), l'éjection de particules a été observée lors des premières microsecondes suivant l'ablation de cibles poudreuses préparées· sous formes de pastilles et a permis de comparer trois types d'étalons solides préparés dans le laboratoire à partir de sol-gels.

Book excerpt: Les méthodes de détection et de caractérisation d'espèces moléculaires d'intérêt atmosphérique dans l'infrarouge se tournent de plus en plus vers l'utilisation de sources laser, monomodes, cw et accordables, complétant des outils tels que les spectromètres à transformée de Fourier (résolution spectrale limitée, source d'erreurs pour la détermination de paramètres moléculaires).Le spectromètre laser infrarouge à différence de fréquence que nous avons développé fonctionne au moyen de deux sources lasers solide (un Nd :YAG, 800 mW à 1064 nm, et une diode-laser à cavité externe, 10-50 mW à 805-885 nm) opérant dans l'infrarouge proche, focalisées au sein d'un cristal non-linéaire de LiNbO3 (PPLN). Il en résulte l'émission d'un faisceau laser à la fréquence égale à la différence des fréquences des faisceaux incidents. Celui-ci possède une largeur spectrale de 3×10-5 cm-1, est accordable de 1800 à 3100 cm-1 sur de petits intervalles spectraux de 0.5 à 1.0 cm-1 avec une puissance de quelques 0.1 microW et un rapport signal/bruit allant jusqu'à quelques milliers, permettant d'enregistrer rapidement (dans une minute environ) les profils et intensités de raies d'absorption avec grande précision. De plus, cet instrument est très compact (0.7×0.7 m2). Nous présentons l'instrument et sa caractérisation avec des raies de N2O, la détermination des intensités absolues de NO2 dans l'infrarouge (par intercalibration avec l'UV-visible) montrant des différences systématiques de 5 % par rapport à la base de données HITRAN 2004, ainsi que la première observation d'interférences collisionnelles dans la structure hyperfine de HI (un effet prédit il y a plus de 20 ans).

Furthermore, it functions as a sensitive analytical instrument that measures, within a few seconds, a wide range of isotopes in inorganic samples. Determining the elemental or the isotopic composition of ancient material is essential to address questions related to ancient technology or provenance and therefore aids archaeologists in reconstructing exchange networks for goods, people and ideas. Recent improvements of LA-ICP-MS have opened new avenues of research that are explored in this volume.

Book excerpt: Dans le cadre de la prévention des pollutions atmosphériques et de la protection de la qualité de l'air, la métrologie à l'émission des sources fixes est un élément important pour permettre non seulement d'évaluer la concentration d'un ou plusieurs polluants mais également d'en estimer les flux annuels. Les méthodes de mesure de polluants atmosphériques retenues doivent en principe permettre de vérifier le respect des concentrations limites fixées par arrêtés. Pour répondre au besoin émergent de disposer de moyens de suivi en continu des rejets, la spectrométrie d'émission sur plasma induit par laser (LIBS) présente de nombreux atouts : cette technique permet d'accéder à une analyse multiélémentaire sans nécessiter ni de préparation d'échantillon, ni de conditions d'analyse particulières (la mesure est réalisée à température et pression ambiantes) et ce, quelque soit l'état physique des rejets (liquide, solide, gaz, aérosol). L'objectif de ce travail, soutenu par l'ADEME et menée au sein du CEA et de l'INERIS, est d'étudier et optimiser la technique LIBS pour la mesure en continu et in-situ des polluants métalliques particulaires émis par les sources fixes (incinérateurs, fonderies...). Au cours de cette étude, deux approches expérimentales sont menées conjointement : la première, réalisée au CEA, consiste à recueillir sur des filtres des particules métalliques micrométriques générées avec un nébuliseur ultrasonore puis à analyser ces filtres à l'aide d'un montage LIBS adapté (analyse indirecte). En parallèle, un deuxième dispositif est réalisé à l'INERIS afin d'analyser ces mêmes particules en focalisant le laser directement dans une cellule d'analyse (analyse directe) dans laquelle circule le flux de gaz entrainant l'aérosol. Pour être en mesure d'évaluer correctement les dispositifs d'analyses LIBS ainsi que des protocoles d'acquisition et de traitement des données adaptés à l'analyse d'aérosol, un montage spécifique de génération et de caractérisation d'aérosols métalliques a été conçu et mis en oeuvre. A la suite de ces développements et essais en laboratoire, une campagne de mesures sur un site pilote a été menée au Centre Technique des Industries de la Fonderie (CTIF) à Sèvres. Des mesures ont été effectuées sur un procédé de fusion afin de suivre in situ et en temps réel la concentration en particules métalliques émises lors de coulées de cuivre. Les résultats obtenus confirment la pertinence de l'utilisation de la LIBS pour le contrôle des métaux lourds émis par les sources fixes.
