Book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions written by A.A. Kaplyanskii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions'' contains chapters on some key problems selected from a broad range of spectroscopic studies of RE-activated solids including both crystalline and glassy materials. Progress in crystal field theory is surveyed, an area which is basic to our understanding of the energy levels. The treatment of dynamical properties includes studies of coherence phenomena in isolated ions, energy transfer between ions and co-operative phenomena associated with ion-ion and ion-lattice interactions. In addition, the role of electron spins and nuclear spins is studied by light scattering and double resonance techniques. The presence of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines is observed and studied in many contexts, leading to new insights into general problems of the disordered state. Considerable attention is devoted to describing new experimental techniques whose development is of prime importance for progress in the spectroscopy of RE-activated solids. Many of these rely on the development and application of tunable lasers. At the moment this is a very active field of spectroscopy with more exciting developments likely to occur in the future.

Book Theoretical Spectroscopy of Transition Metal and Rare Earth Ions

Download or read book Theoretical Spectroscopy of Transition Metal and Rare Earth Ions written by Mikhail G. Brik and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in detail the main concepts of theoretical spectroscopy of transition metal and rare-earth ions. It shows how the energy levels of different electron configurations are formed and calculated for the ions in a free state and in crystals, how group theory can help in solving main spectroscopic problems, and how the modern DFT-based methods of calculations of electronic structure can be combined with the semi-empirical crystal field models. The style of presentation makes the book helpful for a wide audience ranging from graduate students to experienced researchers. Performance of optical materials crucially depends on the impurity ions intentionally introduced into the crystalline host materials. The color of these materials, their emission and absorption spectra can be understood by analyzing the relations between the electronic properties of impurity ions and host crystal structure, which constitutes the main content of this book. It describes in detail the main concepts of theoretical spectroscopy of transition metal and rare earth ions.

Book Optical Spectra of Transparent Rare Earth Compounds

Download or read book Optical Spectra of Transparent Rare Earth Compounds written by S. Hufner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Spectra of Transparent Rare Earth Compounds investigates the optical spectra of transparent rare earth (RE) compounds such as europium chalcogenides. Emphasis is placed on the underlying physics in selected examples, and theoretical results are usually presented without proof in a form that allows their application to the interpretation of experimental data. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with an overview of the spectra of RE ions in ionic crystals, paying particular attention to the sharpness of many lines in the absorption and emission spectra. How these very narrow lines arise, what interactions determine their energy, and how they can be used to investigate particular properties of the solid state are explained in detail. Subsequent chapters explore the energy structure of RE free ions in solids; trivalent RE ions in a static crystal field and in a phonon field; magnetic interactions and hyperfine interactions; and Jahn-Teller systems. The absorption spectra of europium chalcogenides are also considered, along with REs in glasses and RE lasers. This monograph is written primarily for solid state physicists and those who need an overall view of the basic features of rare earth spectra in transparent solids, such as new workers.

Book Energy Levels and Predicted Absorption Spectra of Rare Earth Ions in Rare Earth Arsenides

Download or read book Energy Levels and Predicted Absorption Spectra of Rare Earth Ions in Rare Earth Arsenides written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crystal-field Hamiltonian for octahedral symmetry was used along with free-ion parameters for aqueous solution to fit the reported optical absorption spectra of Er(3+) in ErAs. Predictions showed excellent agreement with reported experimental data at so 74, and 300 K. Consequently, we used an interpolation procedure to predict the crystal-field splittings of the lower multiplets of the rare-earth ions Tb(3+) through Yb(3+) in their respective arsenide compounds. The lowest multiplet energy levels predicted for Tm(3+) and Yb(3+) compare favorably with measurements made by inelastic neutron scattering. In addition, we calculate the absorption spectra for Tb(3+), Dy(3+), Ho(3+), TM(3+), and Yb(3+) in their respective arsenide compounds at 4.2, 77, and 300 K. From these calculations, we show the transitions between the levels of the lowest two J multiplets for each of the ions ... Rare-earth arsenides, Rare- earth spectra.

Book Nanostructured and Advanced Materials for Applications in Sensor Optoelectronic and Photovoltaic Technology

Download or read book Nanostructured and Advanced Materials for Applications in Sensor Optoelectronic and Photovoltaic Technology written by Ashok K. Vaseashta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal aim of this NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) "Nanostructured and Advanced Materials for Applications in Sensor, Optoelectronic and Photovoltaic Technology" was to present a contemporary overview of the field of nanostructured and advanced electronic materials. Nanotechnology is an emerging scientific field receiving significant worldwide attention. On a nanometer scale, materials or structures may possess new and unique physical properties. Some of these are now known to the scientific community, but there may well be many properties not yet known to us, rendering it as a fascinating area of research and a suitable subject for a NATO ASI. Yet another aspect of the field is the possibility for creating meta-stable phases with unconventional properties and the ultra-miniaturization of current devices, sensors, and machines. Such nanotechnological and related advanced materials have an extremely wide range of potential applications, viz. nanoscale electronics, sensors, optoelectronics, photonics, nano-biological systems, na- medicine, energy storage systems, etc. This is a wide-ranging subject area and therefore requires the formation of multi-disciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, engineers, molecular biologists, pharmacologists, and others to work together on the synthesis and processing of materials and structures, the understanding of their physical properties, the design and fabrication of devices, etc. Hence, in formulating our ASI, we adopted an int- disciplinary approach, bringing together recognised experts in the various fields while retaining a level of treatment accessible to those active in specific individual areas of research and development.

Book Physics of Laser Crystals

Download or read book Physics of Laser Crystals written by Jean-Claude Krupa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of laser crystals has been constantly developing since the invention of the laser in 1960. Nowadays, more than 1500 wide-band-gap and semiconductors crystals are suitable for the production of the laser effect. Different laser devices are widely used in science, medicine and communication systems according to the progress achieved in the development of laser crystal physics. Scintillators for radiation detection also gained benefit from these developments. Most of the optically active materials offer laser radiations within the 500 to 3000 nm region with various quantum efficiency which fit the usual applications. However, new crystals for laser emissions are needed either in the blue, UV and VUV - region or far IR- region, especially for medicine, computer microchip production and for undiscovered practical uses. Scientific problems of the growth and properties of laser crystals are discussed in numerous books and scientific journals by many scientists working in the field. Therefore, we thought that joint discussions of the scientific and technical problems in laser physics will be useful for further developments in this area. We have proposed to held a Workshop on Physics of Laser Crystals for attempting to induce additional advances especially in solid state spectroscopy. This NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was hold in Kharkiv • Stary Saltov th nd (Ukraine) on august 26 - September 2 , 2002, and was mainly devoted to the consideration 0 f modem approaches and Iast results in physics of laser crystals.

Book Predictions of the Spectra of the Rare Earth Ions Ce 3 Through Yb 3 in the Two Sites of Ca5 PO4 3F

Download or read book Predictions of the Spectra of the Rare Earth Ions Ce 3 Through Yb 3 in the Two Sites of Ca5 PO4 3F written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of fitting the experimental data on Er(3+) in the two Ca2+ sites of Ca5(PO4)3F are used to predict the crystal-field parameters for the entire rare-earth series. These crystal-field parameters are then used along with the free-ion wavefunctions determined with aqueous parameters to determine a set of energy levels of the rare-earth ions Ce(3+) through Yb(3+) for both Ca(2+) sites (Cal with C(sub 3) symmetry and Ca2 with C(sub s) symmetry) in Ca5(PO4)3F. Also, the Judd-Ofelt parameters, Omega k are determined for each ion in the Cal and Ca2 sites, as well as the Zeeman g factors for the ground states. jg.
