Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the Forms of Discourse A book of this sort is best used after the student has had some introduction to the types of compo sitiou. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the Forms of Discourse This volume attempts to give specimens of five forms of discourse, that of Criticism being added to the four primary types. Under the head of Exposition there is also a specimen of Summary (p. 138), and, under that of Argumentation, a specimen Brief. There are sixty examples all told, from forty different authors. About the same number of exercises are suggested - and merely suggested - on pp. 365-367, the later tasks requiring more labor than the earlier. The purpose of the collection is to furnish illustrations supplementary to lectures or a manual, and to supply material for the inductive inference of rhetorical principles on the part of the student. Models, in the enslaving sense of that word, the selections are certainly not meant to be. Franklin may have molded himself on Addison, and Stevenson may have woven his style with an eye to patterns from a score of looms, but no such direct imitation is recommended to college students in this volume. Yet the study of models has its purpose to-day, as truly as when Raphael plucked out the heart of Perugino's secrets, and proceeding to other masters bettered the instruction of each. Book The Forms of Discourse With an Introductory Chapter on Style Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forms of Discourse With an Introductory Chapter on Style Classic Reprint written by William B. Cairns and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forms of Discourse With an Introductory Chapter on Style This work is an attempt to present the subject of literary invention in a form suited to the needs of pupils in high schools and colleges. It has been prepared because the author was unable to find, in the many excellent text-books on formal rhetoric, any adequate discussion of this subject that he could use with his own classes. The authors of many recent text-books have assumed that the study of rhetoric is the study of style, and nothing more. If they have treated the forms of discourse at all, they have done so by way of literary analysis, and not in a manner that will prove helpful to young writers. The study of style is of the greatest importance. It should come first in a course in English, and it may profitably be continued, even by the greatest writers, throughout life; but it is not a study in which progress can be forced. The reason that so many courses in rhetoric are partial failures is because the pupils have already learned as many rules for style as they can assimilate without further knowledge of invention. The average junior or senior in the high school has been taught the principles of grammar, and something of what is generally known as English composition. Book A Book of Prose Narratives Chosen and Edited Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Prose Narratives Chosen and Edited Classic Reprint written by Chauncey Wetmore Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Prose Narratives Chosen and Edited A new book of specimens in any of the forms of discourse should be welcome if the matter is fresh and inviting and also of standard worth, and if the principle is sound as well as practical, even more if it be new. These selections are certainly not hackneyed hardly any of them are to be found in a similar book; and read able they as certainly are, some of them as readable as a fairy tale and some as readable as a magazine article. Yet all are standard; here is nothing ephemeral. What then of the principle? Instructors in English have long wanted a book of narrative specimens for use in freshman classes, both as a guide to writing in the simpler forms and as a literary stimulus. Now the editor of practically every manual in use crowds into one bulky volume examples of every one of the forms. Among the examples of narration he tucks in a stray chapter of history, or of biography or travel. But in general his excerpts are short stories or chap ters from novels; the study of narration he takes to mean the study of story-writing and story-reading, the study of one of the finest of the fine arts. All very good, but does it fit the needs of the ordinary freshman? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse We who have just come to this State, meet every day with the old settlers who are not yet old men; and we can hardly believe their stories of the wilderness - of log-huts, and stem toils, and the hunter's life - told amid scenes where cultivation reigns, and where Taste with rosy fingers has scattered so many embellishments. Book The Principles of Written Discourse Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Written Discourse Classic Reprint written by Theodore W. Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Written Discourse It has been specially prepared for use in our higher collegiate classes and assumes a familiarity, on the stu dent's part, with some elementary manual, as - Hart, Haven, Jameson or Kellogg. We believe that it will thus meet an urgent need in our more advanced rhetori cal teaching and give to the student a healthful stimulus in this most important branch of liberal culture. We present a discussion of the subject that is substantially complete, while the various principles are sufficiently illus trated to confirm their correctness and guide the student. We desire, moreover, to state that while the treatise is so systematized and presented as to answer the purposes of class-room instruction, we have been anxious to make it a readable book for literary students at large. This is especially true of Part II. - a division of the work to which we would invite special attention. We have aimed to place Discourse upon a basis from which it cannot be permanently moved and so to co-ordinate it with all our mental processes and activities that it shall rise at once from a mechanical artifice of the schools to an essential Science and a practical Art and be seen to be instinct with intellectual and moral life. If students of Discourse are in any wise helped by it to higher views and better work in the special department with which it deals, we shall have realized our fondest h0pes. T. W. H. Book The Science of Discourse

Download or read book The Science of Discourse written by Arnold Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Discourse: A Rhetoric for High Schools and Colleges Man continually speaks or writes, reads or gives audience. Rhetoric deals with all these universal and lifelong processes; hence, its practical importance is obvious and emphatic. This study, however, got its name from the one exercise of speaking - from the Greek rhetor, speaker - because, in the political life of the Greeks, so much depended on the art of public address. If this study should be named now, and after the most effective means of formal communication, the term would come from reading or writing; and it would not matter which, as each presupposes the other. But we care now nothing for the name except to insist, in obedience to the demands of both life and logic, on its extension over all phases of the discourse process. Until quite recently it has been customary to organize this subject under the literal meaning of the word, attaching it to the chair of oratory in college and confining its practical value to those engaged in public address. Thus, as with the Greeks and Romans, it became the hidden art of the few by which fickle masses were to be swayed. But now it is not so much the swaying of masses that is needed as masses who can critically estimate and appreciate the utterances of others. And these utterances are comparatively seldom made now in the form of public address, but in that of the book, the newspaper, and the magazine. Book Discourses and Selected Writings

Download or read book Discourses and Selected Writings written by Epictetus and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains The Discourses/Fragments/Enchiridion 'I must die. But must I die bawling?' Epictetus, a Greek Stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicopolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature. In this personal, practical guide to the ethics of Stoicism and moral self-improvement, Epictetus tackles questions of freedom and imprisonment, illness and fear, family, friendship and love. Translated and Edited with an Introduction by Robert Dobbin

Book Disciplinary Discourses Michigan Classics Ed

Download or read book Disciplinary Discourses Michigan Classics Ed written by Ken Hyland and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do engineers "report" while philosophers "argue" and biologists "describe"? In the Michigan Classics Edition of Disciplinary Discourses: Social Interactions in AcademicWriting, Ken Hyland examines the relationships between the cultures of academic communities and their unique discourses. Drawing on discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and the voices of professional insiders, Ken Hyland explores how academics use language to organize their professional lives, carry out intellectual tasks, and reach agreement on what will count as knowledge. In addition, Disciplinary Discourses presents a useful framework for understanding the interactions between writers and their readers in published academic writing. From this framework, Hyland provides practical teaching suggestions and points out opportunities for further research within the subject area. As issues of linguistic and rhetorical expression of disciplinary conventions are becoming more central to teachers, students, and researchers, the careful analysis and straightforward style of Disciplinary Discourses make it a remarkable asset. The Michigan Classics Edition features a new preface by the author and a new foreword by John M. Swales.
