Book excerpt: The complex material histories of the Nintendo Entertainment System platform, from code to silicon, focusing on its technical constraints and its expressive affordances. In the 1987 Nintendo Entertainment System videogame Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, a character famously declared: I AM ERROR. Puzzled players assumed that this cryptic mesage was a programming flaw, but it was actually a clumsy Japanese-English translation of “My Name is Error,” a benign programmer's joke. In I AM ERROR Nathan Altice explores the complex material histories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (and its Japanese predecessor, the Family Computer), offering a detailed analysis of its programming and engineering, its expressive affordances, and its cultural significance. Nintendo games were rife with mistranslated texts, but, as Altice explains, Nintendo's translation challenges were not just linguistic but also material, with consequences beyond simple misinterpretation. Emphasizing the technical and material evolution of Nintendo's first cartridge-based platform, Altice describes the development of the Family Computer (or Famicom) and its computational architecture; the “translation” problems faced while adapting the Famicom for the U.S. videogame market as the redesigned Entertainment System; Nintendo's breakthrough console title Super Mario Bros. and its remarkable software innovations; the introduction of Nintendo's short-lived proprietary disk format and the design repercussions on The Legend of Zelda; Nintendo's efforts to extend their console's lifespan through cartridge augmentations; the Famicom's Audio Processing Unit (APU) and its importance for the chiptunes genre; and the emergence of software emulators and the new kinds of play they enabled.

Book Embedded Memories for Nano Scale VLSIs

Download or read book Embedded Memories for Nano Scale VLSIs written by Kevin Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Zhang Advancement of semiconductor technology has driven the rapid growth of very large scale integrated (VLSI) systems for increasingly broad applications, incl- ing high-end and mobile computing, consumer electronics such as 3D gaming, multi-function or smart phone, and various set-top players and ubiquitous sensor and medical devices. To meet the increasing demand for higher performance and lower power consumption in many different system applications, it is often required to have a large amount of on-die or embedded memory to support the need of data bandwidth in a system. The varieties of embedded memory in a given system have alsobecome increasingly more complex, ranging fromstatictodynamic and volatile to nonvolatile. Among embedded memories, six-transistor (6T)-based static random access memory (SRAM) continues to play a pivotal role in nearly all VLSI systems due to its superior speed and full compatibility with logic process technology. But as the technology scaling continues, SRAM design is facing severe challenge in mainta- ing suf?cient cell stability margin under relentless area scaling. Meanwhile, rapid expansion in mobile application, including new emerging application in sensor and medical devices, requires far more aggressive voltage scaling to meet very str- gent power constraint. Many innovative circuit topologies and techniques have been extensively explored in recent years to address these challenges.

Book Practices of Wafer Fab Operations

Download or read book Practices of Wafer Fab Operations written by Len Mei and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-25 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wafer fab has one of the most complex manufacturing activities in the modern industry. It involves highly sophisticated and fast changing technologies, extremely high capital spending, short product and technology lifecycle and ultra sensitivity to the yield and quality. A successful wafer fab operation requires not only know-how in technologies/ products, acute sense in management, basic understanding in business and in-depth knowledge of the operation theories. This book provides an overview of the requirements of running an efficient, cost effective and high quality wafer fab operation. It discusses almost all important aspects of operating an efficient operation based on the concept of operating curve management. It covers the important subjects such as: how the automation will help in the operation, how to measure the effectiveness of quality control system, how to manage the capital expenditure, the important elements of process and technology management, including yield enhancement from the prospective of quality, cost down and speed, what kind of KPI's to use to measure the performance in different operation areas in the fab. To lay a foundation for the discussion of the wafer fab operation, this book also presents the relationship between wafer size conversion and its financial impact to the profitability, the consequence of Moore's Law to the cost and eventually economic feasibility of the next generation wafer fabs. It shows that if the top-most economic trends and business guidelines are violated, no matter how efficient the operation is, the wafer fab cannot turn profit. For the readers who already have a lot experience in the wafer fab operation, there is much food for thought in this book.
