Book Specification for Exchange of Product Analysis Data

Download or read book Specification for Exchange of Product Analysis Data written by Deborah Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-08-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 25 years computers have been introduced in industry to perform technical tasks such as drafting, design, process planning, data acquisition, process control, and quality assurance. Computerized solutions nevertheless have normally been single, isolated devices within a manufacturing plant. Computer technology is still evolving rapidly. The life cycle of todays' products and production methods is shortening, with continuously increasing requirements of customers, and a trend to market interrelations between companies at a national and international level. This urges a need for efficient storage retrieval and exchange of information. Integration of information flow is urgent inside companies to closely connect together departments, which used to work, more or less, on their own. On the other hand direct communication with outside customers, suppliers, and partner institutions will often determine the position of an enterprise among the competitors. In this sense, computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) is the key of today for the competitiveness of tomorrow. But the realisation of a future oriented CIM concept is not possible without powerful, widely accepted, and standardised interfaces. They are the vital issue on the way to CIM. They will contribute to harmonise data structures and information flows and play a major role for open CIM systems. Standardised interfaces should allow for: Access to data produced and archived on computing equipment which is no longer in active use; Communication between hardware and software from different vendors; Paperless exchange of information.

Book Digital Products

Download or read book Digital Products written by C. Werner Dankwort and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to the classical needs, competition on the global market requires from industry product innovations: quality, time to market, reduction of costs (Q,T,C). The modern process networks of product development and manufacturing passing the borders of countries and including several companies could not work without an extensive use of information technology. This is going far beyond the former idea of Computer Aided Design. Thus the 3'd Workshop on Current CAx-Problems did not focus on functionalities or methods aiding design like in the first two workshops but on "Digital Products - Living Data is the Future": problems of the virtual simulation of the entire industrial process, starting with the development of a product and covering the complete life cycle. The workshop aimed at bringing together the three groups: industry (mainly automotive manufacturers), system suppliers, and fundamental research. During the workshop, communication between these three groups had to be intensified, and especially also among competing companies of the same branch to pave the way for concerted actions, which are essential for all in the future.

Book Assessing the Requirements for Sustained Ocean Color Research and Operations

Download or read book Assessing the Requirements for Sustained Ocean Color Research and Operations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is a fundamental component of the earth's biosphere. It covers roughly 70 percent of Earth's surface and plays a pivotal role in the cycling of life's building blocks, such as nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, and sulfur. The ocean also contributes to regulating the climate system. Most of the primary producers in the ocean comprise of microscopic plants and some bacteria; and these photosynthetic organisms (phytoplankton) form the base of the ocean's food web. Monitoring the health of the ocean and its productivity is critical to understanding and managing the ocean's essential functions and living resources. Because the ocean is so vast and difficult for humans to explore, satellite remote sensing of ocean color is currently the only way to observe and monitor the biological state of the surface ocean globally on time scales of days to decades. Ocean color measurements reveal a wealth of ecologically important characteristics including: chlorophyll concentration, the rate of phytoplankton photosynthesis, sediment transport, dispersion of pollutants, and responses of oceanic biota to long-term climate changes. Continuity of satellite ocean color data and associated climate research products are presently at significant risk for the U.S. ocean color community. Assessing Requirements for Sustained Ocean Color Research and Operations aims to identify the ocean color data needs for a broad range of end users, develop a consensus for the minimum requirements, and outline options to meet these needs on a sustained basis. The report assesses lessons learned in global ocean color remote sensing from the SeaWiFS/MODIS era to guide planning for acquisition of future global ocean color radiance data to support U.S. research and operational needs.
