Book Energy Loss of Alpha Particles in Matter

Download or read book Energy Loss of Alpha Particles in Matter written by Juli Okayama and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2019 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics, grade: 0.82, University of Manchester (The University of Manchester), language: English, abstract: Alpha particles, or Helium nuclei, are projected by a radioactive isotope source into a vacuum chamber filled by varying thicknesses of either metallic foils (aluminium, nickel) or gases (helium, nitrogen, argon). A Silicon detector, placed at the opposite end of the chamber, detects the final energies of the alpha particles as they penetrate through the media. It is theorised by the Bethe-Bloch equation that the greater the thickness of the medium in the vacuum chamber, the lower the final energies. Through comparison between the Bethe-Bloch equation and experimental data, the ionisation values for the various elements used can be found. Our preliminary results for one such element, aluminium, demonstrate an ionisation value of I=141.2eV.

Download or read book Alpha Particle Ionization of Argon Mixtures Further Study of the Role of Excited States written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BS>The average energy required to form an ion pair, W, when alpha particles are absorbed in mixtures of argon with other gases is studied. The other gases were selected on the basis of their ionization potentials. One group consists of representative gases that have ionization potentials below that of Ar (15.77 ev) and above the doublet metastable state of Ar (11.49 and 11.66 ev). This list includes methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, xenon, and krypton. The other group of special interest consists of some gases with ionization potentials below the metastable state of Ar. All gases tested in these two groups cause an increase in ionization, i e., a decrease in W, when added to argon. As an illustration of this effect, the addition of 1/2% of acetylene to Ar will increase the ionization by 23% The experimental data, i.e., W as a function of relative concentration of the two gases, were fitted to a model in which it is assumed that energy is transferred from two excited levels in argon to the additive gases in collision processes. Good agreement between the experimental data and calculations based on the model is taken as additional evidence that the excited state notion is correct. A quantity of particular interest, the ionization efficiencies for the additive gases, was derived from the data fitting procedure and compared with those found in photoionization studies in a few of the cases. Book A STUDY OF ALPHA PARTICLE IONIZATION IN ARGON MIXTURES

Download or read book A STUDY OF ALPHA PARTICLE IONIZATION IN ARGON MIXTURES written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of one or more long-lived nonmetastable excited states of argon in the 15 to 15.5 ev range has been indicated. The increased ionization observed when certain impurities are added to argon is attributed to this long lived excited staate rather than to molecular argon or subexcitation electrons. A competitive process between optical decay and ionizing collisions was evidenced by spectral analysis of the gas mixtures. From these experiments it was not possible to determine the exact energy levels of the suggested long-lived excited states. (auth).
