Book excerpt: From time to time the idea has suggested itself to some of the best authorities on the amelioration of plants, that this atavism was not due to an innate tendency, but, in many cases at least, was produced by crosses between neighboring varieties. It is especially owing to Verlot that this side of the question was brought forward. But breeders as a rule have not attached much importance to this supposition, chiefly because of the great practical difficulties attending any attempt to guard the species of the larger cultures against intermixture with other varieties. Bees and humble-bees fly from bud to bud, and carry the pollen from one sort to another, and separation by great distances would be required to avoid this source of impurity. Annotation Published: February 2014.

Book On the Tendency of Species to Form Varieties

Download or read book On the Tendency of Species to Form Varieties written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection" is the name of a journal article that includes two scientific papers that were jointly presented to the Linnean Society of London on July 1st, 1858. The piece also includes an introduction by Joseph Dalton Hooker and Charles Lyell, as well as an abstract of a letter that Darwin wrote to Asa Gray. The Darwin-Wallace hypothesis of evolution through natural selection was initially introduced in the paper, which first appeared in print on August 20, 1858. Darwin was inspired by the papers' presentations to create an abbreviated "abstract" of his "huge book" on Natural Selection. On the Origin of Species, a version of this was released in November 1859.

Book On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection

Download or read book On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1858 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties' is a landmark article on Wallace's ideas of natural selection in relation to evolutionary theory. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.
