Book Medicine and Technology in Canada 1900 1950

Download or read book Medicine and Technology in Canada 1900 1950 written by Allison Kirk-Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past two centuries, technology has played a significant role in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in Canada. Technology -- in the form of instruments, devices, machines, drugs, and systems -- has aided medical science, altered medical practice, and changed the illness experience of patients. Nineteenth-century medical technology consisted of predominantly surgical and diagnostic instruments used by individual practitioners. By the twentieth century, large, hospital–based technologies operated by teams emerged as powerful tools in the identification and management of disease [...] Our selection of diseases, research initiatives, and medical treatments highlights larger patterns in medicine, identifies Canadian contributions, and considers the impact of these innovations on Canadian society. In this fifty–year period, public health initiatives limited the spread of contagious diseases and addressed the problem of impure water and milk. Medical practitioners used X–rays to diagnose tuberculosis and to treat cancer. The discovery of insulin in Toronto in 1921–22 offered a management therapy for diabetes patients, who were otherwise facing certain death.

Download or read book America on Trial written by Robert Reilly and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Founding of the American Republic is on trial. Critics say it was a poison pill with a time-release formula; we are its victims. Its principles are responsible for the country's moral and social disintegration because they were based on the Enlightenment falsehood of radical individual autonomy. In this well-researched book, Robert Reilly declares: not guilty. To prove his case, he traces the lineage of the ideas that made the United States, and its ordered liberty, possible. These concepts were extraordinary when they first burst upon the ancient world: the Judaic oneness of God, who creates ex nihilo and imprints his image on man; the Greek rational order of the world based upon the Reason behind it; and the Christian arrival of that Reason (Logos) incarnate in Christ. These may seem a long way from the American Founding, but Reilly argues that they are, in fact, its bedrock. Combined, they mandated the exercise of both freedom and reason. These concepts were further developed by thinkers in the Middle Ages, who formulated the basic principles of constitutional rule. Why were they later rejected by those claiming the right to absolute rule, then reclaimed by the American Founders, only to be rejected again today? Reilly reveals the underlying drama: the conflict of might makes right versus right makes might. America's decline, he claims, is not to be discovered in the Founding principles, but in their disavowal.

His rotund and bearded figure made him one of the most famous characters of the Victorian age, along with Gladstone and Queen Victoria herself. He has been described as the greatest cricketer of all time (only Sir Donald Bradman could seriously challenge him) and England's greatest sportsman. Born near Bristol in 1848, he scored nearly 55,000 runs in his career, including 126 first-class centuries, and took nearly 3000 wickets. He scored 152 in his first Test match, becoming a national legend, and was the first batsman to score 2000 runs in a season and the first to record a triple century.

Book The Green Thread

Download or read book The Green Thread written by Patrícia Vieira and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Green Thread: Dialogues with the Vegetal World is an interdisciplinary collection of essays in the emerging field of Plant Studies. The volume is the first of its kind to bring together a dynamic body of scholarship that shares a critique of long-standing human perceptions of plants as lacking autonomy, agency, consciousness, and, intelligence. The leading metaphor of the book—“the green thread”, echoing poet Dylan Thomas’ phrase “the green fuse”—carries multiple meanings. On a more apparent level, “the green thread” is what weaves together the diverse approaches of this collection: an interest in the vegetal that goes beyond single disciplines and specialist discourses, and one that not only encourages but necessitates interdisciplinary and even interspecies dialogue. On another level, “the green thread” links creative and historical productions to the materiality of the vegetal—a reality reflecting our symbiosis with oxygen-producing beings. In short, The Green Thread refers to the conversations about plants that transcend strict disciplinary boundaries as well as to the possibility of dialogue with plants.

Book Concepts of Criticism

Download or read book Concepts of Criticism written by René Wellek and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provocative and penetrating, these essays attest to Mr. Wellek's intense concern during the past two decades with the problems besetting the disciplines of literary theory, criticism, and history. Each essay accordingly sets as its goal the development of a concept that will contribute to better understanding of the literary work. Trenchant investigation of such significant critical concepts as baroque, romanticism, and realism are complemented by illuminating surveys of the current state of literary criticism and related commentaries on contemporary literary theory and scholarship. "Concepts of Criticism "constitutes a valuable statement of Mr. Wellek's theoretical position. A number of the essays are published for the first time and a bibliography of Mr. Wellek's publications is included. Rene Wellek, author of "A History of Modern Criticism, 1750-1950," is Sterling Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale.

Book Plants in Children s and Young Adult Literature

Download or read book Plants in Children s and Young Adult Literature written by Melanie Duckworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the forests of the tales of the Brothers Grimm to Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree, from the flowers of Cicely May Barker’s fairies to the treehouse in Andy Griffith and Terry Denton’s popular 13-Storey Treehouse series, trees and other plants have been enduring features of stories for children and young adults. Plants act as gateways to other worlds, as liminal spaces, as markers of permanence and change, and as metonyms of childhood and adolescence. This anthology is the first compilation devoted entirely to analysis of the representation of plants in children’s and young adult literatures, reflecting the recent surge of interest in cultural plant studies within the environmental humanities. Mapping out and presenting an internationally inclusive view of plant representation in texts for children and young adults, the volume includes contributions examining European, American, Australian, and Asian literatures and contributes to the research fields of ecocriticism, critical plant studies, and the study of children’s and young adult literatures.
