Book Graduate Medical Education in the European Region

Download or read book Graduate Medical Education in the European Region written by World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics about postgraduate training requirements in the main medical specialties in 26 European countries belonging to the World Health Organization are presented. It is noted that conventions vary widely from country to country concerning the designation of main specialties and subspecialties. These variations are apparent from the lengths of time given for training in some subjects. For each country, information is presented on undergraduate training, internships, specialist training, and assessment. For each specialty, information is provided on the number of years required for training, the inclusion of an internship, and type of examination. The tables enable comparison of specialties within and among countries. A brief narrative introduction reports the following trends: increasing specialization and subspecialization, a comprehensive review of the system of specialist training in seven countries, and formal postgraduate training in general practice/family medicine/general medicine in 18 countries. One reason for these trends and changes is the graduate shift in emphasis from high cost, high technology medicine toward primary care and prevention. Additional reasons are the need for cost containment and the desire to achieve international comparability of standards. (SW)

  • Author : Fritz Henn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 3642595197
  • Pages : 2231 pages

Download or read book Contemporary Psychiatry written by Fritz Henn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 2231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German version of this work has a long tradition, and this fourth edition is the first to see an English version. Its main feature is the international approach regarding both authors and topics. The four internationally renowned editors were able to acquire the leading specialists for each field as contributors to the book. No less than 120 authors, half of them from non-German speaking countries, ensure an extremely high standard and that cross-cultural aspects are considered. Another major feature is that the book presents the evidence such that it may be examined from at least four different entry points -- via basic disciplines of psychiatric knowledge about groups defined by demographic criteria. Detailed linkages to other chapters allow the inclusion of neighbouring disciplines, such as the neurosciences and molecular biology. Contemporary Psychiatry is also unique in including chapters on psychiatric disorders caused by catastrophes, disasters etc. -- aspects totally neglected by normal textbooks. While this book gives an overall view of the state of the art of psychiatric knowledge, it even goes so far as to suggest future perspectives.

Book Policies and Practices for Mental Health in Europe

Download or read book Policies and Practices for Mental Health in Europe written by and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2008 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WHO report co-funded by the European Commission gives an overview of policies and practices for mental health in 42 Member States of the European Region. A large majority of countries have made significant progress over the past few years, and several are world leaders in mental health promotion, mental disorder prevention activities, service reform and human rights. Nevertheless, this report also identifies weaknesses in Europe, some systematic, such as a lack of consensus on definitions, and of compatible data collection, and others such as the need for development and investment across several areas. It identifies gaps in information where further work must be done, and is a baseline against which progress can be measured towards the vision and the milestones of the Mental Health Declaration for Europe. The data were obtained from the ministries of health of 42 European Member States. Over 150 figures and tables in the report demonstrate the diversity across the European Region, and allow country to country comparisons of indicators such as numbers of psychiatrists, financing, community services, training of the workforce, the prescription of anti-depressants and representation of users and carers.
