Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Report on the Decrease of Certain Birds, and Its Causes, With Suggestions for Bird Protection Some correspondents failed to answer these questions, and others. Answered rather indefinitely. The definite answers received are tabulated below. Seventy-three of those who regard birds generally as diminishing in num bers estimate the percentage of decrease as follows: one, 10 per cent; one, 12% per cent; twenty-one, 25 per cent; one, 30 per cent; six, 3331, per cent; thirty-three, 50 per cent; five, per cent; three, 75 per cent; two, 90 per cent. Eleven state that birds are decreasing somewhat, but give no estimate of the percentage; those also who regard birds in general as increasing give no percentages. It is im possible, therefore, with the figures at hand, to arrive at the average Opinion as to the percentage of decrease of the birds in the State, to say nothing of the facts in the case. To get at even an approximation of the facts, other methods must be employed. The table shows that a large share of the reports-were pessimistic, and on its face, perhaps, presents a darker picture than the facts will warrant. A Tabulated Statement, by Counties, of the Reports regarding the Decrease of Birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Legislation for the Protection of Birds Other Than Game Birds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legislation for the Protection of Birds Other Than Game Birds Classic Reprint written by T. S. Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legislation for the Protection of Birds Other Than Game Birds Bird protection in its broadest sense appeals to many persons and diverse interests, and its importance is becoming more generally appreciated. The sportsman who values birds chiefly for the pleasure derived from their pursuit as game, the market hunter who hunts them solely for profit, the farmer who regards them in the light of their relation to agriculture, and the many persons of every class who derive enjoyment from their presence are all interested in the ques tion Of their preservation. The sportsman has long realized the necessity for protective measures, but the farmer has only recently learned to appreciate the full value of birds as insect destroyers. More exact knowledge of their food habits has resulted in a higher estimate Of their utility on the farm, and demonstrated more clearly than ever the necessity of active measures to insure their protection. Recent years have also witnessed a greatly increased interest in birds from the aesthetic standpoint, which has resulted in the formation of numerous protective organizations known as Audubon societies. Still bird destruction is going on rapidly in the United States, and in many regions there is a marked decrease in the abundance of certain species. Cheap guns, lax laws, the mania for collecting and shooting, and more especially the enormous demand for birds for market and for the millinery trade, are responsible for this reduction in bird life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal Protection of Migratory Birds The Myriads of migratory birds that fairly astounded the early explorers of this country before its virgin forests had been destroyed, its green fields trodden to dust by the feet of tramping millions, or its silences broken by the din of thousands of cities, have inspired the writing of volumes of literature. These volumes have told of the wanton and thoughtless slaughter of the birds, and have given warning of their certain disappearance with the settlement of the country and the usurpation of the forests, fields, and streams that had furnished shelter, food, and breeding places for these feathered hosts. Other volumes have set forth the steps that should be taken to save the birds from the ultimate extinction threatened by the acts of people ignorant of their real economic value, and have told of the annual destruction of millions of dollars worth of forests and crops by injurious insects formerly kept under subjection by the birds. Yet all the while the birds were actually being exterminated, in spite of such protection as could be afforded by the laws of various States. The food value and economic importance of the migratory birds of the United States, amounting to many millions of dollars annually, justify the widespread interest in their preservation. Not less important is the esthetic value of birds the inspiration and stimulus which they give to the moral sense, and the charm and beauty which they lend to the life of all our people. Researches by the Bureau of Biological Survey into the economic value of insectivorous birds have proved that they insure the farmer against outbreaks of insect pests, a most serious menace to the agricultural wealth of the country. Valuable in other ways are the game birds, which not only furnish delightful and pleasing recreation to the great army of American sportsmen, but add materially to the food supply of millions of people. Book Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil

Download or read book Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil written by Arthur H. Howell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil: A Report of Progress During the growing season of cotton the adult weevils are concealed the greater part of the time on the buds, or 'squares, ' where the enfold ing bracts afford almost complete protection from most of their enemies; this fact largely explains why comparatively few weevils are eaten by birds during the summer months. The amount of time they spend on the wing and the distance they fly from place to place are not well known, but it is only during the period of maximum infestation that any considerable proportion of the insects can be found in exposed situations. After the first hard frost, weevils begin to leave the cotton plants and seek sheltered places in which to hiber nate. During this period their numbers are materially reduced, but in favored seasons many weevils successfully pass the winter in their retreats. Rubbish piles about the borders of fields apparently furnish the most desirable hibernating quarters, and in such situations the weevils are exposed more or less to the attacks of ground-feeding birds. They are said to make use also of the hiding places afforded by the cotton and corn stalks which have been left standing. Investigations thus far made show that while fewer weevils are destroyed by birds in winter than in summer, the number of Species of birds that feed upon them in winter is somewhat greater. The birds which eat boll weevils in winter and spring and up to the time of the breeding season of the insects are more important economically than those which eat them in summer, for the reason that during the season of nonactivity of the weevils a relatively long period must elapse before they can make good the losses in their numbers, while during the breeding season weevils multiply with astonishing rapidity.
