Book Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations written by Michael Griebel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meshfree methods for the solution of partial differential equations gained much attention in recent years, not only in the engineering but also in the mathematics community. One of the reasons for this development is the fact that meshfree discretizations and particle models are often better suited to cope with geometric changes of the domain of interest, e.g. free surfaces and large deformations, than classical discretization techniques such as finite differences, finite elements or finite volumes. Another obvious advantage of meshfree discretizations is their independence of a mesh so that the costs of mesh generation are eliminated. Also, the treatment of time-dependent PDEs from a Lagrangian point of view and the coupling of particle models and continuous models gained enormous interest in recent years from a theoretical as well as from a practial point of view. This volume consists of articles which address the different meshfree methods (SPH, PUM, GFEM, EFGM, RKPM etc.) and their application in applied mathematics, physics and engineering.

Book Rotation Reflection and Frame Changes

Download or read book Rotation Reflection and Frame Changes written by Rebecca M Brannon and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthogonal tensors are mainly used to describe rotation. They play a central role in robotics, rigid-body kinematics, and all other branches of engineering mechanics, especially for modelling elastic and inelastic behavior of materials. Whilst vast literature is available for common rotation-related tasks, such as coordinate changes, most reference books tend to cover one or two methods for handling rotations, while often neglecting relatively obscure rotation-related tasks, such as statistical sampling of rotation for multiscale constitutive modeling. Further specialized rotation-related research can be found only in disparate journal articles. Of the few books that do exist, most are aimed at mathematicians, leaving a need for this self-contained engineering focused review that covers both elementary and advanced concepts. Rotation, Reflection, and Frame Changes presents a refreshingly broad range of rotation-related research that is routinely needed in modern engineering practice. By including theorems and physical insight acquired over her 30+ career as both as laboratory and university researcher, Rebecca Brannon has created a truly practical and accessible guide for engineers and scientists in engineering mechanics. Although the book assumes familiarity with multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and elementary tensor analysis, tutorials and provided computer source code guide the reader through more advanced topics.

Book Composite Structures

Download or read book Composite Structures written by I.H. Marshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-09-30 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.

Book Stochastic Finite Elements A Spectral Approach

Download or read book Stochastic Finite Elements A Spectral Approach written by Roger G. Ghanem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph considers engineering systems with random parame ters. Its context, format, and timing are correlated with the intention of accelerating the evolution of the challenging field of Stochastic Finite Elements. The random system parameters are modeled as second order stochastic processes defined by their mean and covari ance functions. Relying on the spectral properties of the covariance function, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion is used' to represent these processes in terms of a countable set of un correlated random vari ables. Thus, the problem is cast in a finite dimensional setting. Then, various spectral approximations for the stochastic response of the system are obtained based on different criteria. Implementing the concept of Generalized Inverse as defined by the Neumann Ex pansion, leads to an explicit expression for the response process as a multivariate polynomial functional of a set of un correlated random variables. Alternatively, the solution process is treated as an element in the Hilbert space of random functions, in which a spectral repre sentation in terms of the Polynomial Chaoses is identified. In this context, the solution process is approximated by its projection onto a finite subspace spanned by these polynomials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are delighted to present this book which contains the Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics (ICCFD5), held in Seoul, Korea from July 7 through 11, 2008. The ICCFD series has established itself as the leading international conference series for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers specialized in the computation of fluid flow. In ICCFD5, 5 Invited Lectures and 3 Keynote Lectures were delivered by renowned researchers in the areas of innovative modeling of flow physics, innovative algorithm development for flow simulation, optimization and control, and advanced multidisciplinary - plications. There were a total of 198 contributed abstracts submitted from 25 countries. The executive committee consisting of C. H. Bruneau (France), J. J. Chattot (USA), D. Kwak (USA), N. Satofuka (Japan), and myself, was responsible for selection of papers. Each of the members had a separate subcommittee to carry out the evaluation. As a result of this careful peer review process, 138 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 28 for poster presentation. Among them, 5 (3 oral and 2 poster presentation) papers were withdrawn and 10 (4 oral and 6 poster presentation) papers were not presented. The conference was attended by 201 delegates from 23 countries. The technical aspects of the conference were highly beneficial and informative, while the non-technical aspects were fully enjoyable and memorable. In this book, 3 invited lectures and 1 keynote lecture appear first. Then 99 c- tributed papers are grouped under 21 subject titles which are in alphabetical order.
